Before the whiners and yourself go discounting the new display, don't you think you need to see it in person. You are comparing it to the cheap low-res, non-LED backlit, glossy displays of the old MB.

Have you ever worked with a MBA? It has a high-res, LED, backlit display and it is beautiful and performs well in most lighting situations. Most of the reflections that you see in photos of glossy displays are a result of photographing a glossy display. To the user, the reflections are barely noticeable.

I think the biggest reason people see this as a big loss, is that for the last year or two, some have hung on to the misconception that Apple displays were better than Sony Vaio displays because Apple displays were professional matte displays while Sony used LED glossy displays. The fact is that Sony was ahead of Apple in display technology and now Apple is finally catching up.

well said! I use the MBA at home and when I am out and about shooting (most recently in Italy in full-on sunlight. apart from when I had the near noon sun directly behind me, I hard noticed. And to be honest until today I didnt even think the screen was'glossy'. Not that I dont know the difference, just that it hadn't annoyed me in any way.

I think people should go take a look at the screen. Its a shame they try to make the advertising material look so 'pretty' that they chose to highlight the gloss effect with 50/50 clear/reflective images of the screens.

I know a matt screen is best for colour work etc (its why I have a dell 30"), but on the notebook I am fairly sure it wont be that bad at all (I, of course reserve the right to amend that statement when I finally get my grubby mitts on a new MBP) :)

A fair question

"Before the whiners and yourself go discounting the new display, don't you think you need to see it in person. You are comparing it to the cheap low-res, non-LED backlit, glossy displays of the old MB."

I think this is a fair question. While I have used several PC notebooks with glossy screens and hated them all, I haven't yet seen these new ones up close. maybe they are better. But ALL the pictures and movies I have seen so far on Apple's site appear to me that these screens are no better than all the other glossy screens I have ever seen. If I find that they are not reflective, I'll apologize to Apple and buy one of the butt ugly things, mainly because I love the OS.

But having an opinion is not being a whiner.

Fair enough.

Everyone has an opinion and where would we be today without whiners. If everyone was 100% satisfied with what lays before us we would still be living in caves and chasing antelope for supper.

You are being exactly what you hate others for doing. You are whining about others opinions on a board which is mostly used for discussing things. Kinda ironic and hypocritical.

Exactly. If you don't like the glossy screen, get one of the thousands of matte screen covers that exist for the sole purpose of minimizing the (minimal) glare.

The lack of a physical FireWire port on the new MacBook models is arguably the only true downside to the revision, but again, the simple fact is that most consumers aren't the type who would ever use FireWire. USB 2 is far more popular for a multitude of reasons, and that's what most consumers are using.

I user Firewire for Time Machine backups. My drive won't work without it. I think backups are a "consumer" usage.

SOO expensive for the pro and the macbook.... i live in Australia and the pricing for the pro is like $3200- that's like a $600 increase from the old models

i think i might wait out until Snow Leopard comes out as well as the quad core for the laptop

BUT again soo expensive i will probably hold out until the prices start to drop

a few months ago the AUD was buying 0.98 USD. A few days ago the AUD was buying 0.66 USD.

Despite that MASSIVE change, if you compare the USD and AUD MBP entry model prices (excluding tax) they are USD1999.00 and AUD2908.18. Now if you type USD1999.00 into your dashboard conversion widget you get (at least right now I get) AUD2848.40. A difference of only $AUD51.60. Hardly a lot to cover Apple Australia's costs...

Really the removal of firewire from the MB was the only real downside to the new update. It makes me think that Apple is slowly trying to abandon the FW standard. I wonder is it is wise to even buy firewire only drives in the future.

Glossy Screen Only? NOT FOR ME!

I like all the new stuff, EXCEPT THE GLOSSY SCREENS. I don't like the glossy screens period! The glare and reflection is unbearable. It is distraction and causes considerable eye strain. The colors pop too much and are inaccurate.

I've tried to like the glossy screen. I've been to the Apple Store many times and played with the Imacs and Mac Books with it. You walk in and see everything reflecting off those screens. There is nothing to love.

I will hang on to my matte screen Mac Book Pro until Apple changes their direction on this, or my MBP dies.

True pro users are not happy about this at all! :(

Two of my best qualities "ironic and hypocritical". But I don't hate any others on this board.

Would this be an upgrade?

Currently I have a Macbook Pro 2.2ghz intel core 2 duo processor with 2gb 667mhz DDR2 Ram, GeForce 8600M GT graphics + LED screen. I'm just wondering if getting a Macbook with the upgrade to the 2.4ghz is worth it, instead of my Macbook Pro?

Apple reduced the Student Discount!

I still can't understand why Apple reduced the Student Discount, that extra 100 dollars off (disccount went from 200 to 100 dollars off) the MBP is the difference between me buying the new one (to replace my not so old mbp) and not buying it. I can deal with the glossy screen by eventually getting a screen protector down the line, although i think it's BS that I should have to pay extra for it. Apple should fund my screen protector, lol. But that extra 100 is a big deal for a student.

but the previous pricing scheme was not set when the Aus dollar was maxed out... it was developed a few years back where the Aus dollar was closer to todays value...

So Apple Australias costs decreased while not altering their sale price for that time period.

What is your reason for upgrading? Your MBP will outperform the MB. Your gpu is still better than the 9400M and you probably have 6 MB of cache compared to the MBs 3 MB. The slight bump in CPU speed probably won't make any real world difference. In addition you have a larger display and more ports.

It really depends on what you use your laptop for. If your not running graphics intensive applications, more or less: yes that high end macbook is probably better for you.

This sucks.

The Macbook has no firewire, and no expresscard slot to add one?

For those who want a smaller laptop or can't afford the MBP, this really blows. This new Macbook is worthless...

I'm utterly disappointed. I had dreamed for months of pairing a small MB with my Apogee Duet audio interface for portable recording. How could they do this?

I'm uterly dissapointed too, I have to sell these computers day to day, I live to love them and I can't believe they did this, and the mini display port is just ANOTHER add on to **** over the price, the macbook should've had so much more...
Why can't we go back to the clampshell type macs? hahahahahaha they lasted longer, this screen looks really breakable, the outputs are miserable, the Cache is the same, what the HELL IS WRONG WITH APPLE... Is like Microsoft putting in their finger up too much in our decisions? ...

Nice design... Kind of trendi and all...

AND WHAT'S UP WITH GLOSSY FOR MBP?!??!?!?! Are you KIDDING ME... How the hell am I going to explain to a pro graph artist at the store ... "hey yeah glossy's good... It's the new wave and you have a matte option" ?

Insane I really am pissed and abhor the new :mad:

so wait the only diferance about the mb and the mbp is the screen size? thats why i should pay $700 more?

larger screen size, stereo speakers, backlit keyboard (its on the 1499 model not the 1299), discrete nvidia graphics chip (but the fact it doesn't change on the fly seems rather pathetic). I don't know if thats worth 700 dollars, I really don't think it is, although it may be worth it when Snow Leopard is released, hopefully thats sooner rather than later.

Oh I forgot to mention the Firewire port, which was dropped on the Macbook, the only reason that was done was so that the line between MB and MBP isn't blurrier than it is now.

No. Besides screen size and resolution.
The MBP has a faster CPU, a much faster discrete GPU, FW 800, Express card, 6 MB cache CPU compared to 3 MB, and ability to use SSD instead of HDD if desired.

I have owned every single revision of Apple 15" "pro" laptops since the 1.5Ghz PowerBook. Every last one. Every time Apple has introduced a new 15" laptop, I've bought the new lower-end configuration, and sold the old one.

This is the first time I believe I'll be breaking that pattern. Glossy truly is a deal-breaker. I like to take my work outside. I commonly work beside the pool. It's tough, but doable, with matte. With glossy, it's pretty much impossible.

There are certainly people on the boards who nitpick, but as someone who's dropped $12K on just his own laptops over the past 3 and a half years, I think I have a little credibility here.

My attempt to list the differences:
- Screen size
- Resolution
- Processor Speed
- FireWire
- 9600M GT
- More Harddrive options
- ExpressCard/34

That's about it, I think.

so if i want the 2.4 with 9600mgt is that possible or is it only for the 2.5?
also those are not the centrino 2 processors right? why are they still using c2d? thanks!

EDIT: omg is it in SLI?? lol
