Wow, if this isn't the biggest collection of whiners on one forum, I don't know what is!

People are flipping out over a glossy display? You habitually do work outside, not in the shade, but in the sun for extended periods of time?

Really?

Products change. Get over it. If you really can't stand the update, shut up and buy the previous version. Whining about how you hate the update on an online forum isn't going to get you anywhere, it just makes you look like an ass.

Anyway, I think the update is pretty cool. Wish it had a blu-ray player, but all and all I'm pleased :D

I think the machine is beautiful. I'm just surprised they didn't up the specs more, or drop the price. That's my only disappointment.

That and I'm confused by the fact that they've mixed up the former lineup with the new.

Look at if for a minute or two, its actually a nice design!

I have the same gripe about the glossy display I currently have an HP and you cannot use the thing outside or near any bright light.

If this glossy screen is anything like the iMac however, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Using my sister's iMac with lights on an all windows exposed during mid day does not really phase the screen. Unless you have a light directly behind you, it handles glare pretty well.

I'm going to check it out in stores, but honestly the design is growing on me.
I may walk out with one of these, or possibly an old one, we'll see.

It's one of those that will have to gro on me. (It has already started)

Why didn't Apple just merge them all into one line??? There are so many similarities between the new MacBook and the new MBP that it seems confusing to have them as 2 different lines. Given the fact that Apple seems to be driving away their serious Pro customers, I predict that we will soon be seeing one line of Apple laptops with very similar specs, but different screen sizes. What do y'all think???

Yeah my main gripe is that they're keeping the white Macbooks around at the lower cost of 999. So now the new Macbooks are more expensive than the old low tier Macbooks, which is kind of disappointing to me. In all honesty, for me, and I'm sure others as well, I'm looking for a notebook that gets the job done. I don't really need a lot of juice or storage space or anything because I would use a desktop as my work computer.

I currently use a Macbook Pro as my main computer, and am looking to get an iMac in the not too distant future. What I'd then like to do is have a Macbook to supplement that, but I don't see that happening until the consumer notebooks hit more of a consumer price point.

After a year of waiting I just ordered the 15" 2.8GHz, 320GB Serial ATA @ 7200 MBP. As an artist, I'm not sure I'll be happy with a glossy screen, but it hasn't bothered me when I've sat down with an MBA. Still, I wish they had given "professionals" the option. Sigh.

Deciding to go all out, I also pre-ordered the Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium, a new Airport Extreme, and applecare. Thank the Gods for educational discounts! It makes waking up to teach painting tomorrow morning so much sweeter! :)

You'll be very happy with this laptop. It appears to be a beautiful piece of engineering.

I can't understand all the whiners due to such a minor issue as a glossy display. As an artist you will love the display. It has better contrast, is sharper, and brighter than a matte display. I think once you actually put the machine to use you'll love the display.

People are whining so much about a matte display that they failed to notice the really nice features, such as the stronger structural design, the much improved graphics performance, the improved keyboard, the ease of swapping HDD with the option to upgrade to SSD drives at a later date when they are faster and cheaper.

All in all it is a great update. I can't hardly believe reading comments like "I'm keeping my G4 PB now!". Come on, give me a break. This machine is so far superior to the performance of PB G4 it is ridiculous. Also remember when Snow Leopard comes around early next year, this laptop will be poised to excel.

Well I was patiently waiting for this day to roll around so that i could upgrade from my first gen macbook. I wanted to get a new base config macbook pro. I was also hoping for a little bit of a price drop... I was hoping for something less disappointing... I just placed an order for a refurb 15" macbook pro! What a deal!:D

what a hideous piece of crap, I'm glad I bought the last 2.6 17"
they might as well just sell the awful imac without a foot and a macbook keyboard glued to the bottom.

+1

I just purchased a loaded 15" MBP from the refurb section for $850 less than it would have cost me me this morning....Quite a deal indeed :D

Apple keeps making it easier for me to hold on to my $$$ longer. By only offering glossy screens on the iMac and now MBP line, I feel rather glad that I have a SR MBP 17."

If this is the course of things to come I will stick with my present HW investments.

Something tells me that the 17" MBP will be the new mid level offering and there will be a possible 19-20" MBP as the high-end.

And by turning up the brightness on an LED backlit display you are killing any power savings, this seems like a very bad move. Offer it in matte and the people would have had another 1+ hour(s) of mobile usage.

Well great for you! This is a forum where people air their OPINIONS so if you don't agree with them then add something constructive. Jeez!

In the case of the MBP, this is a perfect example of screwing up something good.

I'll pass and drive my current MBP into the ground. I wish the iPhone division would just split off into another company so that Apple could get back to designing and building great computers.

LOL, consumers drive sales. If consumers are not happy the sales will drop and Apple will eventually listen. By the looks of it, sales are up. However that was with a matte offering. Given the economy downturn, I do not feel its a wise choice to have the lowest notebook offering at $999, plus no option for matte. There will be a dip in the next Q sales, unless the iPhone and iPod Touch will be picking up the slack.

lol... i think he did air his OPINON. and i agree with him 100%.

Glossy doesn't require the sun to be reflective. Its reflective with any amount of light. That light can be in an office, in a bedroom, in a kitchen, ANYWHERE. That's the problem. When I'm working on a graphics project I'll occasionally shift in my seat to get more comfortable, I don't want to have to shift my notebook as well and angle it correctly before I have to get back to work. Hell I wouldn't even want to do it before I get started, I would just want to open up and go.

The problem isn't that products are changing, its that this is a redesign and from this first step Apple will only improve upon previous designs. If the matte option wasn't included in the initial conception I doubt it will be included with later products. That's terrible news for someone like me, who used to have a glossy MB but switched to a matte MBP about a year later and did not look back. If I were Apple I would just move these new MBPs into the MB line (remove the "Pro" name) and focus on designing a whole new set of actual Pro machines.

So stop sounding like a fanboy and actually see where people are coming from in their criticisms. The construction is a solid step forward, but the lack of key options for Pro users is severely lacking.

Extremely disappointing that you have to log out and back in to change the graphics card... yet other laptops are able to change on the fly...

UNIX support for video modes has often been quite a ways behind other operating systems. Not really surprising.

If you were going to go to the trouble of getting your power adapter out or put it away to move the laptop, can't you just press logout and then let it go while your moving stuff around?

Unless you're switching applications and want to change from "good graphics" mode to "best power savings" mode. You shouldn't have to reboot or log out to change applications.

Switching between power-hungry performance graphics and battery-saving mainstream graphics doesn't mean switching between mains power and battery power. Sometime when on battery you feel the need for speed over battery life.

I guess it just needs to restart its graphical overlay on top of the kernel- understandable, considering.

It was "understandable" in the 70's. Now, not so much.

I have Windows systems that I can add CPUs and memory without rebooting, change NIC and disk controller drivers online, even upgrade controller and system firmware online. Reboot to upgrade a driver - silly. Logout to change a video setting - absurd.

Don't accept mediocre when other operating systems easily handle the same situation.

I wouldve preffered no update, honestly

I cant stand the people who say "you gripe too much; stop complaining!"

Is it too much to ask for perfection? Apple's always proclaimed they're "different," yet they've proved they now conform to the industry standards. Yes I have a problem with the black screen, the black bezel, the black keyboard. Terrible updates and a step backwards. I've used the anodized aluminum iMac at a school lab and it actually hurt my eyes - didn't think it'd happen to ME.

Also, does Apple not realize that nobody cares if their computer is "green?" They don't care how the computer was manufactured, whether its 1 piece or 1000 pieces. And what a waste of an aluminum block. I wonder how much energy it takes to run their factory? I bet neither are environmental friendly.

I hope Jobs leaves soon because if this is the direction Apple is heading, I'm going to use my same old Macbook Pro for years to come.

Well I couldn't wait any longer... I have a nice 2.8 GHz iMac with decent Mac display in the office and have been using a 17" PB I brought in 2002 for travel. The PB, as wonderful as it has been, needs to be updated and I would really have liked a replacement 17" MBP as I do a lot of editing Word docs etc.... but alas it was not to be. Ordered a 15" today which will do the job and be a little lighter to travel with, it just won't have quite as much room to work with documents as I'm used to... I'm greedy really. I was also really wanting a change as I've been looking at the same old machine now for 6 years... and as reliable as it has been, I want to look at something different that keeps up with the iMac at the office. I just have this feeling they'll release the new 'brick' 17" model just before Xmas with all the new goodies including the quad processor.... I just hope I wont have to wait another 6 years before the next upgrade! Having said that, with the new CNC laser etc etc manufacturing process, it should be a lot easier to make structural and cosmetic changes, so we will hopefully see refreshes a little faster. I just hope this new screen won't warp as much as this one has, to the point I can close the lid any more.

Best post of the day

Exactly.
