Just another thing,

To see several long typed Rants about the lack of FW400 ports, It is Not an Issue.

Unless you want "several" FW ports on a laptop, not sure that is realistic or really even necessary.

Actually yes it is. Most high end video cameras use FW ports as their outputs, and you can not daisy chain them or you get drooped frames. So with a drive that means you need at least two. OK. the express port can give you one (with a card) but I currently use three when on a set since I also set up an old AJA analog FW box for client viewing too. The point is with the new Macbook pros you actually loose options in you setups for doing live capture, at least that's the problem I see in the video world.

Hello all... I am new here. Today I filed a complaint with Apple's Consumer Relations Division. I feel I have a merited reason being that I am an Audio professional. I DO have a Mac Pro "tower" but like editing and mixing on a Macbook when I travel. A lot of audio applications require a FW400 device to be attached while in use which makes wonder what Apple is thinking...
THE RESPONSE: The response I recieved was in conversation with Apple tech support was, "I am actaully not sure what Apple was thinking, I just found out yesterday myself. I don't understand because we use it for troubleshooting and diagnostics ourselves..." So even the people at APPLE are not happy...
The person with Apple's Consumer Relation's division said if Apple gets enough viable complaints they may change the design of the products... Posting on this forum may do very little good, that's why WE must file with Apple's Consumer Relations Division which you can speak with my calling the main number and requesting to file a complaint with Apple's Consumer Relation's division...
I like Apple, I think they are a great company, I think they make good products... I mean, I have an Apple Logo on my car!! BUT many of US are AUDIO and VISUAL professional who need products with Firewire 400!
I intend no harm to Apple and want them to succeed in their endeavors... But this was a very poor decision that MANY of us will agree on...

You are right, lodging many formal complaints about this, could get Apple to address it, but how. All of the sudden they change the motherboard and case design on the MB, I wonder if it is possible at this point.

Uh, Yeah I get it, not stupid here, As I said in a post elsewhere, used to work at Apple on Final Cut, Apple does not support and has never supported, capturing from a FW DV camera to a FW drive, yes it can be done, especially to a FW 800 port, since it is an independent bus, but Apple and the FCP team have a disclaimer. Capture to internal drives only, I know, it may suck, not enough space, but thats the way it is.

But did we all really think Apple was not going to drop the additional FW 400 port on the MBP, I fully expected it., not surprised.

BUY A FW400 TO FW800 CABLE CASE CLOSED SUEING AVOIDED

And keeping the white base model on the MacBooks? Wierd - not Apple-like at all

They last did this when they introduced the iMac G4. A beautiful machine, just too expensive for the average consumer hence kept the G3 available.

The iMac G4 was a great machine, but is forever remembered as the 'flop' iMac because its unit sales were so low because most people couldn't afford one.

I think this will be remembered as the 'flop' MacBook. Nearly £1000 for the good stuff!

(I think they also brought out a proprietary display connector around the same time too that meant everyone had to fork out more for adapters... Hmmm )

After months of waiting for the redesign I have finally switched to Mac :)

However, I did not purchase one of the redesigned models and instead got the previous gen MBP at a deep discount.

I'm hoping once Nehalem is released Apple will go back to the Matte option. The lack of Matte is the reason I bought the previous gen model.

So for those of you complaining about the upgrades, don't buy them. Apple is more likely to look at their bottom line and sales trends rather than the complaints on these forums.

See I guess I come at it from a "field" kinda view. I don't follow computer tech sites too much (other than this site of course) but from the user end we are needing to hock up more and more firewire devises in the field. Video production is just moving that way, it's too portable for clients not to be asking for it. Since apple is usually so ahead of the rest of the PC world in jumping on "pro" users needs, I actually would have thought they would have given us more firewire options.

Does anyone know of anywhere in the Philadelphia area that actually has the new macbooks in stock? Both the King of Prussia and Ardmore retail locations haven't received their shipments yet.

I wonder if it's possible that the usb ports included on the MB/MBP are actually early-spec USB 3 ports...have the specs been finalized yet? Remember, Apple added draft-n support for the wireless, and it only came out later that it was included with it.

USB 3 is compatible with USB 2, and even uses the same cables as well, and it has a lot higher transfer rate than usb 2. This probably isn't the case, and doesn't help anyone out there with firewire devices...

The new MacBooks look really nice. The screen reminds me of the iPhone.

After the announcement, I noticed that Safari seems a lot snappier! Anyone else?

Interesting: Appears that Apple have been deleting threads about the loss of Firewire on their discussion forum and now the ipetition for matte screens has disappeared from here:

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/m...pro/index.html

In a world paranoid with conspiracy theories, none of this is very reassuring.
They are likely deleting threads and petitions because no matter how much whining there may be, Apple is not going to change their ways. FireWire is dead on consumer products, as far as Apple is concerned. We saw it a few years back with the iPod, and now we are seeing it on the MacBook and MacBok Air. I wouldn't be surprised if the next major iMac revision drops FireWire, as well.

As for matte screens... Glossy is obviously here to stay, like it or not.

Such a shame they don't 'just work'.

Apple are plagued with problems and issues. Battery recalls, iPhone software issues (ask anyone who gets mail via IMAP or POP), rainbow screens etc. etc.

Buying a Mac is no longer a guarantee of a faultless computer.

Seems like the Intel switch is when this all started. Maybe it's just coincidence though. On the software level, it certainly seems like Apple is becoming more and more like our good ole' friends at Microsoft. Leopard had and still has issues. iPhone 2.0 was a wreck and still has many problems in 2.1. And we all know about the problems surrounding MobileMe. Why is stability such an afterthought anymore? All the companies are focused on new features and functionality, and not the core necessities software needs to run efficiently.

Just my two cents. I'm hoping to check out the new MacBooks/MacBook Pros soon.

As consumers we're not totally powerless here. Apple needs our business as much as we want Mac products.

If Apple weren't worried about the level of dissent on these issues they wouldn't be deleting posts and, possibly, petitions.

If customers maintain the pressure and, more importantly, withold their money, things will change.

Unfortunately there are way too many fanboys who will buy a vomit-filled turd and extol the virtues of the ***** if only it had an apple logo.
