just because you can afford it doesn't mean you should lol, if you are not gunning for 96gb ram, get the previous m1 gen at discount, this update is more or less a stop gag before m3 3nm comes out with REAL improvements
People far overestimate how valuable scaling down features on a chip is. It might let Apple get a bit higher frequency on the clock. It might not.
Oh, software available on Windows.
The problem is, that would be stuck using Windows. If that software was available on Linux, I might think about it.

So how long will M1Pro models (particularly 1tb ram models) be out there to buy? And when do we expect to see prices on them fall in response to the release of the M2Pros? I’m upgrading from an ancient 2012 15” Retina and would like to get the best deal I can on an M1Pro 16” 1tb.

m1 max 64gb ram owner here, even though i'm at 55gb usage, 96gb is just not necessary for my tasks.
Mind sharing your tasks profile? I'm in a dire need of an upgrade and simply trying to assess how much RAM I need. I do dev work with dozens of containers and some VMs.

I've got a 2014 MBP (yeah I'm that guy), so I'm finally ready to hit upgrade. I want a machine that'll last 4-6 years and not feel slow, so I'm going with the 16" Max, I'm undecided on 32GB or 64GB RAM though, how much of a difference does that make? Does it double the capability of the machine, or is it relatively marginal as most of the performance is down to the CPU/GPU cores?

Ultimately the 32GB can arrive in a week, 64GB arrives in two, so my patience may get the better of me, but if it's a significant upgrade to 64GB and means the machine lasts another year, I should probably wait.

My use case is currently as a dev, but with how AI is going I could see myself looking to run some of the more basic stuff locally point.

If any y'all have thoughts on this I'm very much open to hearing them.

Ordered the base 14".

I want to get and try it against my current base 14" I got right before Xmas. If it is worthwhile, I will return the base 14" back to Amazon by the end of the January for a refund. The new one is $400 more than the discounted one from Amazon, but resale should be better down the road. I also hope battery life is a bit better.

UK prices are absurd now… £2150/$2650 for the base 14” WOW!!!

Keep in mind that the U.S. prices in the article are before sales tax and the UK figure you are quoting includes VAT. Without VAT, the UK price would be around £1790 which, yes, is still higher in USD than the U.S. retail price but not as much as the $2,650 you posted.

This also applies to comparisons against other countries that include VAT in the price. Again, quoted U.S. prices don't include sales tax so a fairer comparison would be against pre-VAT prices.

When doing intense work, how high does your RAM usage go. Also, does the RAM graph stay in the green or does it dip into the yellow/orange hue?

i had to restart my computer yesterday so this isn't a accurate representation, normally i'm floating around 55-56gb with the rest cached.

oh ofcourse, but at least the shrink of the die helps out with the clock speed and other aspects like better battery life, don't get me wrong, my m1 max will keep me satisfied for at least 5-7 years.

The fact the pressure stays insnaly low in the green despite getting to 47GB usage. That's crazy. Also zero swap.
sorry to burst your bubble, but before my restart yesterday my machine swapped 24gb to the ssd. but thats mostly from a final cut project my company had me look over.

I felt the strongest pull of technolust so far for that 14 inch Macbook Pro M2 Max... I killed it by playing some Forza Horizon 5 on my 2019 16" Macbook Pro.. I will not be able to hold out much longer.. just don't want to give up mobile gaming..🥲

This machine is not business class as it can't run Windows anymore.
Well isn't that a joke. Apple's laptops have been dominating in recent years. They're more reliable, last much longer on battery in practice and are actually often better value (Windows laptops have become a lot more expensive in recent years too). We're gradually phasing out all our Microsoft laptops and replacing them with Apple ones because of all these reasons.

Very few 'business' users actually use any proprietary Windows only software anymore. That may not have been true 10-20 years ago but so much stuff has moved to the 'cloud' which is usable on any machine through a browser, that there's just very little left. In our business, I'm the only one that actually uses *any* Windows only software. And I do it on a Mac, through Parallels.

I’m in the same boat as you. Hopefully more than the $400 during Christmas season.

The Studio can take 128gB - unless you mean you wished for the option of 96gB specifically?
128gb was too pricy so the option of 96gb would have probably been affordable for my needs. I’ve been on 32gb for 8 years so to me my 64gb Studio Max is a breeze.
