Mountain lion's design changed over the course of the betas so I reckon this will look similar to new iOS by time it launches. iOS is probably further along its development cycle than OSX. They both had the same announcement banner styles so I reckon stuff will come soon :) DP3 perhaps

I hope so. It's already looking extremely dated compared to iOS7.

I'm confused by the "named after places in California" thing.

Is Mavericks still classed as OS X 10.9? If so how can there be later releases using the same theme? The next one is surely OS XI? Or will it be OS X 10.10 Compton?

Interface

Just curious -- Is anyone disappointed that it doesn't seem like there will be a new interface design in OSX? Don't get me wrong -- and I'm sure the cynics will eat this up -- but does anyone feel that the color scheme and minor parts of the layout of the OS are gettting slightly stale, much like the previous versions of iOS? Something radical would be nice, considering how the desktop seems to be the little brother, as mobile continues to evolve at an incredible rate.

It would be nice to see the same focus put on the desktop.

Not at all. OSX is really great to use. I love that Mavericks is simply polishing of an already great OS. Not many new features; instead refining of existing features! Much like we saw with Snow Leopard.

Fact: Mavericks is a name of a white-haired German Shepherd that used to swim out with his owner while they were out surfing. So it is still the animal name! :)

Completely agree -- system usage is incredible; always has been. But as we've seen from the incrementality that Android has slowly taken from iOS, design is something that needs to evolve, as well. A wow factor would be great, especially considering the market share Apple has the opportunity to continually encroach upon. So much emphasis is always put on hardware design innovation. Why not the same with software? Don't get me wrong, the OS is incredible -- I'm a life-long fan -- I'm simply saying that a wow factor for OSX would be nice, that's all. You can polish a great car that has run and looked great for its entire life, but if you put it next to a same next generation model, that takes everything that made the previous model great, all the polish in the world won't do a thing.

But can we force using Timer Coalescing and App Nap also when macs are powered with magsafe??
Or we can use them only when it's on battery?
I think it could be useful also in order to get our macs cooler when using them connected to power chord for low cpu activities! :)
For example, I use my 15" retina all the day connected to power chord and to external display and i think there features would help my the mac to be cooler limiting background processes and idle cycles.
Bye :)

How do I go about patenting operating system names? I have a few that I think may be valuable in the coming years...

Half Dome (Or Yosemite, El Capitan, etc.)
Golden Gate
Boardwalk (Santa ((Monica or Cruz)))
Redwood
Sequoia
Marijuana (Shout-out to Humbolt)
Napa
Coronado
Blue Lake (for Tahoe)

And I'll throw in Fresno for good will to the central valley.

anyone notice the dashboard icon was gone?

considering none of those are as half as bad as Mavericks I doubt apple will use them.

First version of OS X to add anything meaningful since Leopard. First good update since Snow Leopard.....

Exactly how I felt. Proper mid 2000's like update. Useful features not gimmicks. Cool updates to finder to remind us that Apple still know about it!

Reminds me of the Spotlight intro back in 2004, good navigation development, love it. :)

And multiple monitor support! **** yeah! :D

Probably by not posting them on a public forum :p

Can you please explain it to me one more time?

The latter.
