I think we're gonna love this release. No rash changes, but fine improvements under the hood, taking away skeuomorphism, and a few really nice new features and applications (like Maps and iBooks).

I wonder how the older machines (like MBA 2011, non-retina MBP, etc.) can benefit from these new power-performance technologies. I really do wonder!!!

Why are the icons not getting a facelift like iOS?

Because God is with us.

...So, what's wrong with complaining about having to wait 5 months?

So, you want Apple to release an untested OS full of bugs, so you don't have to wait 5 months to use iBooks?

What if the iBooks was so buggy to use, it'd take Apple 5 months of software updates to fix it, would you be okay with this?

Think of it this way, Apple is releasing Mavricks 5 months early to let developers test it throughly for 5 months.

Apple implementing optional features? Novel. It was the forced and flawed versions system of lion that really made Windows the only option. I wonder if they can change that now. Kind of doubt it, this OS still isn't going near touch :(.

So, you rather Apple forced it to be mandatory? The OS is open, you don't have to use Safari, you don't have to use iCloud to sync your keychain. You can just use Chrome and use 1Password to save your passwords locally without any cloud services involved.

That's the problem. I do use Keychain to keep track of passwords. Keychain is now moving from my computer to the Cloud. Not good.

No, it isn't. Cloud syncing is optional, just like everything else. You don't want it, turn it off.

If Apple forced this on you, then it is not good but they're not. Many folks want this, so they can turn it on.

So this naming thing. Small thing in light of today's announcements, but still...

Why "OS X"? What's with the X? I never saw anywhere that this is officially Mac OS version 10.9 regardless of the previous version's number.

If it is 10.9, why start a new naming convention at an x.9 iteration. If it really is OS 11, what's with OS X?! Since "OS XI" is unwieldy, and this is the major development we're told it is, Apple should just drop the X altogether and call it Mac OS Mavericks. The beginning of the California series, not a name switch for the last version of the X series. Done and done. Just sayin'.

Forstall must be punching his screen right about now at all the skeumorphism/stitching jokes Federighi is cracking.

I too dislike the skeumorphisms in the previous releases. But it also seemed unprofessional to me for them to be making so many jokes on Forstall's account. Forstall was an integral part of Apple for a very long time after all.

Easy Solution.

1. install 10.9
2. Open System Preferences > iCloud control panel
3. uncheck Keychain syncing.

Problem solved, now you only have a local copy to do with as you please.

They have yet failed again to produce an OS for trolls. Bummer!

I see, as soon as you don't just nod off everything Apple presents you're a troll on these forums now.
Well, I'll have to adjust my perceived definition of "troll" then.
Along with this, now officially welcome me as your new troll.

I didn't see anything during the presentation that would require dropping Core 2 Duo's. The simpler graphics would be even less taxing to the GPU and Timer Coalescing should speed up the system.

I guess the upgrade restriction will be GPU based, i.e. those GPUs that can support OpenGL 4. This will cut out a fair amount of C2D systems.

Looks great, fairly subtle changes to the look (in a good way) but a lot under the hood.

When should they announce what machines are supported (unless no machines are dropped, which would be great but I'm not getting my hopes up)? And how quick will they send the beta out to Appleseed?

Bang on

Looks fantastic. Finder tabs look great. Maps, iBooks, the password feature seems incredible, tags. I love the way they just keep polishing this thing and adding great new features. Brilliant.

Bringing iBooks to the MacOS is good.

MacOS and iOS need to merge - We need to be able to use our data and our applications no matter what the hardware.

Apple should offer legacy support back to Classic, at least, with full 68K/PPC support - there's a tremendous amount of excellent software that was never brought to OSX or iOS. People using that software can't upgrade and abandon their data and applications so they don't. If Apple offered legacy support I have eleven machines I would upgrade and I know of many more people in the same boat. Since they won't support my data and apps I keep fixing old machines and Apple's not making profits on new hardware and OS updates from us.

Don't like the name at all (at least they didn't name it "Goose" ;) ).

Like some of the features, some I don't need.

Big negative is that we have to wait until Fall for Mavericks and iOS7. Appropriate given this is a developer conference, but a bit frustrating.

Well Safari just landed in my AppStore update area under my dev credentials.

It's nice. It's a little faster and the ever scrolling reading list thing is pretty cool.

As I watched the OSX part of the presentation I kept thinking about the complaints, and wish-lists I hear on forums like this...... and to me it seems they have been listening.

Fullscreen/multi-monitor support is definitely something that comes up often here. Improving Finder (the tagging is just icing on the cake), been hearing that one for years. Want for better battery life, and an update similar to Snow Leopard where focus was almost entirely under the hood. Didnt even know I would want Maps on a desktop/laptop until I saw them demonstrate it and its integration with iCal and iOS.

To me this OSX update is a winner. Every feature, be it under the hood, or something I can interact with, is something I actually want, and will actually use. Well apart from keychain icloud cause Im so deeply invested in 1password - otherwise I'd use that too. Really looking forward to this one, and well done to all the Apple team.
