Is the ethernet through the power brick standard for the new iMac or an option? A friend of mine said the latter though i can't find much about it, even on the specs page.

Edit: never mind found it!

Whomever decided to pair pink and red needs to turn in their designer credentials, like right now.

All of the pale colours look terrible paired with the full-saturation backs, but pink + red is especially bad. They’d look so much better monochromatic.

Bold move omitting the Apple logo from the chin.

I hope that there will be a Product (RED) iMac in the near future with red in the back and the front. I'd probably buy that one in 32 inches.

Still not decided about the white bezels though. Maybe they are less visible than the black ones. Many times I questioned Apple design choices only to later find out they were the right ones.

The majority of those customers will purchase them for multiple uses and will use larger files than yourself. I downloaded Zack Snyders Justice League and its a 31GB file. I Download 2 more 4K moves and that’s another 11-30GB.

Trouble is it doesn't really matter if the base is 512GB then - whatever they set as base config has always got potential to be little more than a drop in the bucket versus the open ended (and never ending) storage requirements of multiple games and 4K videos

In that scenario biting the bullet on day one and springing for an external storage solution (in conjunction with least costly internal storage option) could well be the best way to go

Well my wife has >7 years out of her totally non-serviceable rMBP and counting. Components don't fail the way they used to. Did your 2012 MBP have its HDD die and you put an SSD in?

I was more talking about upgradablitly.

There is no way I could have gotten away with 500gb HDD + 4GB of ram in 2021, which is what the machine came with.

If I buy a baseline MacBook Pro in 2021, I am stuck with those specs, and if I want 9+ years, those base specs are not gonna cut it.

But back to repairability:

The current range of MacBooks are essentially screwed when Apple marks them obsolete at 6 years old, given you can’t just swap a lot of parts anymore due to the T2 chip. Batteries are also glued in which makes replacement dangerous. SSDs which are a consumable part aren’t replaceable anymore and neither is RAM, which can and does fail.

My work computer has 0 upgradeability. And even if it did, businesses do not typically upgrade their components. They upgrade their computers every 3-4 years. And if a component breaks, they just replace the system and send the other one in for repair.

My parents do not upgrade RAM and storage. Personally, I do not either. I would rather spend my time working instead of messing around with the computer. If I am really suffering, I buy a new computer and sell the old one.

And this has a poor environmental impact. It is a well known fact that the longer a machine can be used, the better it’s environmental impact is. Lack of repariablity and ugradbality limits the lifespan of computers. A 4/5 year old upgradable and repairable machine has a far greater chance of being useful than a non upgradable/repairable machine.

Having to buy a new machine because one’s ram or storage requirements increase 3/4 years into ownership is wasteful of resources, when the same machine with an upgrade could have cointnued to be serviceable.

This can't be happening....what a disappointment. Maybe Apple can create a new airbag so that it can find its long lost sense of style and creativity. I sort of like the Stickies app. Is Apple going to get rid of it now that we have a full-fledged chin?

Love the chin, its a signature item and also extremely useful for posting items to it. The generic LCD monitor will tiny bezels all around are not useful for posting items to it and are just plain generic and minimal.

If people hate the iMac with the chin then buy the Mac mini with a generic boring LCD monitor.
Eureka! You make a good point for the post it notes community :). I used to work with someone who's Cinema Display was always ringed with post-its.

Love the chin, they forgot to include an Apple logo in the middle. No chin = generic monitor.
I did find the omission of the logo odd. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm curious if the iMacs would look more interesting if the chin was the same colour as the back….

What in the world are you doing that your RAM requirements suddenly increase? This is a nonsensical argument. Buy what you need from day one.

I deployed machines (windows and Mac) at ESPN for two years. You know how many times I upgraded RAM on any device? Zero.

Is that a silver or a white bezel? Either way, YUCK. Too distracting. Black bezels only. Design-wise, this is a total fail.
Since you obviously don't know the difference between a noun and a verb, your comment is a total FAILURE.

Love the colors though, particularly the blue. But yes, the chin is still large. Love this, it is calling me. Although I should use my head and see the specs before plonking my money down.
Specs will likely be identical to the 13" MBP or the Mac mini. Only really difference is the number of pixels being driven with the built in screen and the effectiveness of the cooling system. Other than that, it's difficult to have significant discrepancies in performance with identical CPUs and integrated memory/storage.

I wonder how many of us would have preferred a thicker device with no chin, apple really caters to themselves, they don't think of us (the public) when they design their devices ....

My god people complain about anything. If you want MASSIVE upgradeability, look at the Mac Pro. It has PCIe slots!!!!
Asking for the RAM to be user upgradable like it has always been in the past for the iMacs, is not wanting a MASSIVE upgradability.
The only reason Apple is doing this is so they can continue to rip you off with obscene RAM upgrade pricing.

Why anybody in their right mind, would spend $600 for a 2TB upgrade, when they can get a 2TB external SSD for $220 almost 1/3 of the price?
Apple keeps forgetting we are in 2021. Entry level specs are like we are in 2016, which is pathetic. Apple users, continue being ripped off by obscene upgrade pricing of both RAM and SSD.

What do nobody’s requirements increase? Since 2012 web pages are using more ram, applications have become more ram heavy. Mountain Lion ran happily on 2GB of ram. Big Sur needs 8GB to be happy.

My needs changed several times since 2012, the last being in 2017 when I started running VMs and 8GB became too limiting.

If I’m buying a machine today, I’ll want to still be using it at least in 2030, how the hell can I predict my ram usage 9 years down the track. Also apple’s ram upgrade pricing is obscene.

They omitted the logo on the chin to make it less distracting while viewing full screen content. They’re advertising the new iMac as a TV replacement and a lot of TVs have/had a chin on them. This makes it easy for the iMac to fit into any decor in the room it goes into. The muted color of the chin is meant to be less distracting than the vibrant back colors while still being discernible as a color, not as an accent.

"An iPad on a stick"

Now that the higher-end iPad has the M1 processor, what is this thing? Just a 24" iPad on a stick with a keyboard included in the box.

I had hoped that by now Apple would have an M2 processor. So far all we have is the low-end M1 processor. The same M1 used on the Mac Air and iPad. Will Apple even have a higher-end processor?

Will the Mac Pro be moved to the M1?
