This looks like it has some promising features, but I think I will stick with FF for the time being until the crashing bugs are ironed out.

Because I'm a madman. :p

But yeah, I kind of hope I can stop coverflow... it's pretty annoying.

Edit: Holy ****, mrkgoo from GAF?

Just don't use it then?

THe standard bookmarks menu and even bookmarks toolbar are still there, the cover flow is an additional feature, not a replacement.

I just noticed this on the download page! Does this mean new unibody Macbooks can't use Safari 4 beta?

Edit: Or, re-reading it makes me think that Firewire is required only for G3, anyone can clarify?

I don't have firewire on my air and the beta runs very nicely.

Not sure how I like the tabs on top yet. It is kinda ugly, but maybe I'll get used to it. On the bright side, there's a lot of empty space on the title bar so having multiple tabs would make it less "empty". Plus, less space is wasted having the title menu, address bar, bookmarks bar.

In addition to not being able to add images to posts here, I've found another issue with Safari 4:

In Safari 3.X, while on a web page, I could just start typing and it would automatically search the page for whatever I type, without having to press Command-F. Now when I try that on Safari 4, it locks up and I have to Force Quit.

Anybody know of a way to make Safari default to Top Sites instead of whatever your homepage is set as?

I like to see a progress of the page loading. Now they copied firefox with a spinning circle?

*Pages load very quickly in Safari 4. Having progress bars in Safari 4 would be like having a splash screen at startup--- no point because the app is fully loaded in the time that it would take a splash screen to launch*

I'm liking the techy updates to this (speed, rendering, et al), but I am very disspointed in the UI design changes. Tabs up top are stupid. Requires more movement and just doesn't make sense to have them on the outside.

*Technically there is now one extra line of screen real estate available as tabs now replace the title bar instead of requiring their own tab line*

Plus, now you have to click a little area in the tab's corner to move or extract it, whereas before you could click anywhere.

*This allows for an independent window to be merged into another window. Previously you could only extract and rearrange tabs.*

See points in quote.

I think it's a Mac-only option. On Windows there's a "sprocket" icon with options but the only thing to do with bookmarks is to hide the bar.

Oh, lol. I found a bookmark icon to the far left of the screen. Silly me.

well, they still have some features to add before it will beat firefox/minefield as my default browser.
- the "smart" address bar only searches by URL. If i type in macrumors in firefox it takes me here. in safari i gotta type forums. to take me here.

Valid point, it'd be nice if it didn't depend on the beginning of the url.

also, if i type john lennon in the address bar it doesnt take me to the google results page for john lennon. Neither does g John Lennon, so I don't know about that.

Umm, that's why there's a Google search field... right next to the address bar. Use it, that's what it's there for.

- the RSS reader for firefox is way better than safari's. just my $.2

Didn't know Firefox had one built-in, just it's weird "Smart Bookmarks." Far prefer Safari in terms of default behavior. Plugins change the game of course, but the built-in RSS functionality in Firefox is severely lacking.

- i'd sure like the stop/refresh button to actually be a physical button, but thats just me.

Eh, it's gonna take me some getting used to, but it works fine.

You do realize you can't turn coverflow off right? That's why it's an issue.

Besides, I got rid of it with Terminal.

that is why i seid just dont use it

You can still use the standard bookmarks menu and the bookmarks toolbar.

If you don't use the coverflow feature, why even remove it ??. You still have the bookmarks on the menu:confused:
If I were to go to my bookmarks, it automatically crashed Safari since I have around 5,000 pages there.

Restore the blue loading bar behind the URL - HOW TO

For those screaming to have this feature back...

DebugSafari4IncludeToolbarRedesign and DebugSafari4LoadProgressStyle

When both set to NO it restores the blue loading bar behind the URL. Also puts a page loading spinner in the tab itself, which looks odd with the new tabs.

$ defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4IncludeToolbarRedesign -bool NO
$ defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4LoadProgressStyle -bool NO

Safari Preferences > General > New windows open with: Top Sites
Safari Preferences > General > New tabs open with: Top Sites

Holy Shizzle. It IS fast! :)

The opening movie kind of scared me and when it finished I was like er... now what? :p

Whos betting that this update has now broken HSBC internet banking (only a week after it was fixed). :D

hahaha please dont! I had to use Firefox just to check my balance!

On the plus side, its loads up the HSBC site ALOT quicker than before

My only problem is that I dont quite like the tabs on the top... oh, and the loading status isn't in the address bar either =(

Safari is definitely snappier!

Although I'm not too keen on the tabs being relocated to the main window frame - It appears to be more a grouping of windows than tabs within a window.

Im pretty much liking Safari 4 so far. At first I did miss the blue progress bar but Im getting used to the small spinning wheel. Top Sites is also going to be pretty useful. The speed increase is really nice, glad I got FIOS now.

After all this is just the beta, hopefully Apple makes this even better in the final release.

Oh, and btw, I love the Welcome To Safari 4 opening. Im using that as my homepage now.

Fast

Has anyone noticed how much faster this is? Gads. Forward and back are a lot faster too. It seems like its doing a lot of prefetching and caching. Very nice. Also, I'm liking the Google search bar. Very useful now as it adds a few more completion options. Very happy. Haven't had a bug yet. Maybe I'm just lucky or they are doing better tests on the newest hardware.... don't know (i've got the latest MacBook Pro).
