Not sure what to think of tabs at the top. Nice they want to use that space up, but first impression is it's ugly.

I think it will look better when or if the color is more uniform for the selected tab. IT's a light grey on the top (the tab itself,) but the rest of the toolbar and bookmark bar are a darker grey which is the same color as the non-selected tabs. That's confusing and not distinguishing enough. Really the non-selected tabs should be light grey in keeping with the current color scheme while the selected tab should be dark grey along with the grey around the tool and bookmark bars.

Love the Top Site thing. It is really kool and kind of ominous looking. It needs to be faster though and have a more seamless transition between old content and new content.

Coverflow is in a good spot. I probably won't use it much. I don't even use history that much, but it is in a good spot under the book tab.

Miss the progress bar. I can't see the reason to get rid of it. It was a nice visual indicator. And didn't take up room.

New location for refresh is fine. I never used that "back to the webpage's root page" button anyway. I think the refresh button could be a different color though. Maybe keep the orange color that the other button had.

Happy to see browser development unhitched from OS

Played with Safari 4.0 beta today and am very encouraged. The product seems far along in development and so far does not seem to break anything on our development Leopard server. Great work Apple!

Based on what I see I am going to switch back to Safari in the near future.

Time to test this image thing.

I'm checking to see if I can upload the pictures and stuff, I wonder if I have problems with that too;

I claim this post in the name of the Netherlands.

I guess it worked, don't mind me.

estore the blue loading bar behind the URL - HOW TO
For those screaming to have this feature back...

DebugSafari4IncludeToolbarRedesign and DebugSafari4LoadProgressStyle

When both set to NO it restores the blue loading bar behind the URL. Also puts a page loading spinner in the tab itself, which looks odd with the new tabs.

$ defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4IncludeToolbarRedesign -bool NO
$ defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4LoadProgressStyle -bool NO

After playing around with this for most of the day, I have to say it super snappy :D
It takes it a while to really speed up, but all the sites I normally visit load screaming-ly fast. I am guessing this is the "predictive loading" thing?

safari 4 cool coverflow stuff ( but still seems slower then firefox ) firefox has a cool safari theme u can dowload too.:( sorry not sold on s4

For those that say that tabs on top make no sense - it makes perfect sense. Just like tabbed folders in a file drawer.

What makes no sense really is to have the title of the page you were visiting at the title bar AND in the tab. Just step back for a moment and look at the old style. There were two rows that told you what page you were on. It was necessary though, so I'm not saying it was bad.

I like them, but I am having issue with selecting them vs. slightly dragging the entire window - obviously the problem with combining the same space for multiple use.

Oh, and technically speaking NONE of the buttons in Safari are 'physical' buttons.

forgive me if its been said a thousand times already - but this whole coverflow thing is going to be a pain in the a*se for the more discrete porn viewer - having their naughty secrets just one mouse scroll away...

I sorta like it, similar to the opera homepage but the way it is animated when you click on a page makes it much nicer.

Snapback Was The Best Distinguishing Feature Of Safari!

The Snapback feature has been removed. Bummer.

I think there was another company claiming to own the rights to that feature, so maybe they had a legitimate claim?

I'M VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THIS VERSION OF SAFARI DUE TO SNAPBACK BEING REMOVED.

I use this feature so much and have become so dependent on it that I'll probably make sure I download the old Safari now before its gone (because you know Apple will delete those downloads in a short amount of time)

Whatever speed increase Safari 4.0 has is severely diminished now by the added time and hassle of having to backtrack through previous pages, some of which often want to RESEND forms and such. What a PAIN! Not every body wants 18 tabs or windows open. Grrrrrrr

Snapback is just one of those ingenious simple tricks that outshines all these flashier add-ons, in my opinion. It's especially useful when searching newspaper sites since you can dig way into a newspaper, and then bingo, snapback right to the front page to pick a completely different type of news.

So, this Safari is DOA for me on Snapback and especially embarrassing for Steve Jobs since he so notably touted the feature and now has egg on his face.

This almost reminds me of the variable windshield wiper case. Just pay the man the damn money Apple (whoever owns the copyright), geez!

this might be a local thing, but I've noticed that after installing, my Msn Messneger wont let me type in the box after I've written something unless I click it again..

I've tried re-installing messenger but no help... guess I ought to re-install safari

*sigh*

Pages load very quickly in Safari 4.
Just because it's able to load pages quicker does not mean all websites suddenly load equally quickly. A lot of the internet is slow and a progress bar is still useful.

*Technically there is now one extra line of screen real estate available as tabs now replace the title bar instead of requiring their own tab line*
Screen real estate is not in such high demand that the few extra pixels gained outweighs the disadvantages of the new tab "bar". Not that it's all horrible, it may just take time to get used to, but there are some real disadvantages introduced...

*This allows for an independent window to be merged into another window. Previously you could only extract and rearrange tabs.*
Huh? I don't see any advantages to the new tabs, you can do the same stuff. It's actually annoying having to grab the very right edge of a tab to move it instead of being able to grab any part of the tab as before.

snapback hasn't been completely removed

the button shows up for the search field

Why there when its more useful elsewhere?

Just plain DUMB!

I can't believe more people haven't complained about this honestly in 25+ pages of posts!

Geez, its such a cool feature and saves so much time. :(

Also the Keyboard Shortcut for SNAPBACK has ALSO been removed (Command-Apple-P)
I used that dozens and dozens of times a day!

Just plain stupid.

The problem with the tabs is the color scheme. The selected tab should be dark grey and the non-selected tabs should be light grey (instead of reverse) because this is how the color scheme of OS/X windows are abstractly coordinated.

IF or when they do this then the tabs will look better and make more sense.

sorry to add to this, but i've NEVER used that feature lol...

As long as I can't manage my own cache size, then I won't use Safari. Apple only allows about 20 MB, and I don't want the database file dumped when it reaches that limit. If Apple wanted to make that the default size, then that would be fine, but not being able to increase it means that I will continue to use Firefox and Camino where I have full control over how big or small my cache folder is.

"Full Page Zoom" is now available from:
- Safari 4 Beta
- Opera (been full screen zoom since so long that I can't even remember which version started it all)
- Firefox 3 (discovered that last night, and even said "now only Safari is missing this"*).

* = Internet Explorer 11, available in 2035, will probably have it too. ;)

Now, the question on my mind is: can we have both Safari 3 and Safari 4 Beta installed at the same time on our Mac? Won't they fight over things like bookmarks, etc?

edit: and no, this isn't better than a Mac mini update. :p
I guess I must be seeing things, because my Internet Explorer 7 has full-page zoom.
