I see your point - however, when I try this using Firefox, the page becomes a complete mess due to the frame not adjusting to the resize of fonts. I suppose the seemingly improved crispness of the fonts had me fooled into believing that this somehow employed RI - thanks for the clarification. It does seem that with FF, the frame remains constant, and thus creates the mess - with Safari, the frame expands to accommodate the increase of font size - a great improvement, nonetheless.

I'm no developer, but I assume that getting this right must be fairly tricky because to my mind Opera is the only browser to have gotten this sorted up until now. Although I have to admit that the font rendering in Safari does seem slightly crisper to me when I compare them side to side. It's not perfect though - under this post as I type are the usual "submit reply" and "preview post" buttons. If I zoom up on them then they become slightly screwed up in that they are misaligned to the point where I can see the 3 different graphical elements that go into making up one button. Interestingly, those buttons look totally different in Opera.

My two concerns, which hopefully someone can address:

eBaying with Safari 4 sucks, just like it did with Safari 3. You still can't copy and paste images or different font sizes etc etc like you can in Firefox. Is there a way around this?

Second, is there a Flash block plugin of some sort for Safari? I use FlashBlock for Firefox and it rocks, so I'm hoping there's some kind of equivalent for Safari.

The speed of this new Safari is amazing, though.

turn flash off?

How on earth do you install that? Does it work with Safari 4? Thanks!
Actually, download it from this link: Download ClickToFlash 1.3 here.

This appears on the site in the other link, but it's not readily apparent.

That works great! Is there a preferences pane somewhere for it? I want to add a whitelist...
To edit the whitelist, go to a site you want to add, right-click over a flash frame and select "Edit whitelist..."

That works great! Thanks very much!!

By the way, anyone find it ironic that this page:

http://www.apple.com/safari/features.html

It runs like CRAP on Firefox, but smooth as silk in Safari 4? :)

If you think that's irony, how about this? I can't even load that features page on Safari 4 without it hanging!!!!

I actually went to my ipod touch in order to look at the page, and it ran quite smoothly. What. The. Heck!

Just installed Safari 4 Beta on my 2 machines and it would seem it has interfered with messenger for mac. I am running the latest version of Leo and messenger.

The problem seems to be after I send an instant message, I have to click back on the text-entry box before I can write the next message. This gets very annoying as it makes it harder to keep a convo going as you have to continually reclick in the text box after each message.

Anyone else encountered this problem?

Cheers
It looks like everybody has this problem. Does somebody have a solution ?

Thanks,
Tex

I'm really liking the update, while some of the features are obviously a bit ripped-off from Google Chrome, they are nonetheless welcome additions to Safari which I've always preferred (not that Chrome is available for Mac anyway!). The tabs at the top for example suits me as I'm using a widescreen HDTV so vertical-space is at a premium, and this saves on the extra tab-bar being in the way.

I'm also really liking top-sites, especially the way it shows sites which have been updated. Coverflow history is also nice, but I dunno how much I'm likely to use it.

Some people have criticised this new version for being to flashy, but I think it's something that Apple can do well when they want to, and top-sites is a perfect example of a wonderfully stylish interface that doesn't trade-away usability.

I do miss the old blue-bar loading in the address-bar, the tiny little loading icon isn't nearly as clear or useful. If they would bring the blue-bar back with the new-style address bar widget then it wouldn't seem like a loss.

UI Changes, maybe the new Snow Leopard?

picture11w.png

I know there's lots of new features and big UI changes like Cover Flow, Top Sites and Tabs on Top, but no one seems to be talking about the actual color difference in the new safari. It's a lot brighter than the old version, and the outlines of the boxes are much more crisp. Could this be the new metal look for Snow Leopard?

Actually, I do not have that experience. When I zoom in on this page, unlike with Safari 3 and Firefox, the frame width does expand to accommodate the growth of text size. While reverse zooming, the user space decreases accordingly. RI or not, this is a welcome improvement.

i have no idea what you are talking about, give me a comparison screenshot?

Hadn't noticed that, although it is a very interesting idea. The color is brighter, but so subtle it is not immediately apparent. I am interested to see if you are correct.

Edit: Was Safari 3 selected when you took the screenshot (which is what i am supposing you did) because if so, that could explain the color difference. If you took two separate shots, and put them side by side, nm. Although I agree with the crispness. I am loving Safari here, this is way beyond snappy. Which is good, Safari 3 was starting to get a little slow for some reason.

I noticed on immediate boot up, I think it looks great and if this is the new looks count me in.

It was a screenshot I took last week, and a screenshot I took today, I only noticed it when they were next to each other in photoshop. The active tab is slightly lighter than the inactive tab. The gradient from the inactive tab to the bookmark bar looks like the metal gradient used in safari 3. The metal gradient used in the active tab, or the tabless window looks a lot brighter, and would make a nice metal theme for snow Leopard.

I see it now. Thanks. The change was so subtle I wasn't quite sure if that was the case or not.

Yeah, it a nicer gradient than the old metal look, it's a lot fresher. I think some people felt back when Leopard screenshots first started circling, that the new interface would be too dull and that the Mail's Milk interface would be a better look for Leopard, some people might still think this. I quite like the metal look, but this brighter crisper look is even better.

Still lovin' the new beta. The only problems I've countered are with my online banking and hotmail. Haven't tried some of the other sites that some have mentioned are crashing (CNN video-I avoid that like the plague anyway:rolleyes:, ebay, etc.).

I like the layout and I LOVE its speed.

It must be something wrong with your setup or certain programs you have installed. I have 2 Macs and Bootcamp and I installed S4 on all and neither have problems with CNN video.

Not sure what your screenshot is of. 4 is just barely brighter. Not much at all. Almost like an accident.

In this pic, 4 is on the left, and most definitively has a darker border around the input field. It is actually, lighter (just barely) than 3 (on right).

As a web designer, 4 is driving me nuts. Stuff is so far apart. First, if you only have a couple tabs open, you have to move your mouse quite a long way to select the tabs. When they are limited to a certain size like in 4, then mouse movement is much more efficient. Plus, the new tab button is ridiculously far away. It's all just poor design 101. Apple used to be great at design and communication flow, but lately their apps have started putting buttons in every corner of the window. Truth is, it started with the dock. I'm mousing all over the dang screen. Uppder left for apple menu, then bottom left for system prefs, then upper right for volume, then bottom right for trash. There is absolutely no reason all the system functions can't be in the same place. At least windows has all the switching and system functions at the bottom, and program menus at the top. They even have a arguably better concept of putting the program menus within each individual window. People from windows don't grasp at all what is going on with apple's windows and dock. In Windows, the start bar has a button for everything running. And every window has it's own set of of menus. That rant over, that's the only thing windows does better.

Also in Safari 4, why have they made the refresh button part of the field for the url field window? All the way to the right? Argh. Once again, stuff scattered all over creation. Some command buttons on the left, refresh on the right (and really tiny!).

There's a screen in final cut that has this affliction that kills me every time. Add master template. It's a big resizeable window. In the bottom right is the ok or add buttons. Upper left you choose from differnent template designs, and bottom left is cancel. So depending on your window size, the ok and cancel buttons are potentially 2 feet apart!

Rant over for now.

Edit: Wait, also in the Safari 4 top sites window... search is bottom right. Edit is bottom left. And of course you just clicked the icon at upper right to get to the window. Are they trying to give us carpel tunnel or what? There are very basic design screwups that beginners make. Like a powerpoint made by a receptionist.

Anyone else experiencing the currency widget totally messed up since Safari 4 install? Any way to fix this? Not a fan of the fact that 1 GBP = 0.425 USD!

I think a lot of this is Apple's plan. I BET a touch-screen Apple system is coming very soon. The Top Sites page SCREAMS touch-screen, and I refresh with the keyboard now anyway. I also open and close tabs with the keyboard. Mouse sees little use!
