Where did I say anything about it being the most innovative browser?

Did somebody else actually say that or are you just putting words in my mouth.

no, that was not from you, i clarify it, its from apple's safari page.

Yeah well, that's Apple marketing talk for you. I think Opera have might a fairly strong stake in that particular claim to fame.

of course they do, opera forum is filled with fire.

Opera is now claim to be "fastest browser in real world performance". Altho I think its a way of surrendering js speed race, I do appreciate they standing up and telling people

"you, don't equal js speed to real world browsing speed".

which is true. js speed race is over the top right now, everybody is using jit interpreter, basically everybody is comparing their computer's CPU. 0.01ms speed gain, who can tell?

will see.

If Opera could get a handle on colour-managed browsing and provide an easy way for me to import my keychain for all my passwords etc, I would make it my default browser in a heartbeat. It would also be nice if they could get it to conform to Apple's standard window zooming behaviour rather than maximising Windows-style.

I did notice that Safari is faster in this release. But I have noticed sites that were broken in Safari (Apple was broken) before Safari 4 work now. Now I don't have to use firefox to look at Apple's OWN website in their OWN browser. It is just weird that Apple did not work in Safari 3

significant innovation that no other browsers have been doing? not so much.
I think the new Developer Tools part of Safari 4 is a significant innovation.

I suspect you are in a small group that experienced that. If Apple's own site didn't work in Safari for the majority of people, there would've been hell to pay.

It has. I just feel that the Web Developer tools in Safari 4 takes things to the next level.

i will leave that judgment to developers.

build-in or not,..lets just say, firefox is famous for, and actively encourage, the usage of addons.

PS. developer tool was in webkit package for quite a while, its handy, but rarely useful for normal users. its nice, but I can't call it a significant innovation.

Pretty and Fast, But Unimpressed

The new browser seems to run fine on Tiger, at least on my ancient imac.

Unfortunately, I was hoping the Apple team was going to figure out some way to make bookmarking and organizing bookmarks much more enjoyable, and require less keystrokes.

So far, it seems that Apple STILL hates the idea of an optional bookmark sidebar (which remains up in the window while browsing), a feature which should be a MUST on any new browser. The sidebar is the fastest, easiest way to add and organize bookmarks that I've found. Given that many of us have over 200 bookmarks, how about a way to leave that sidebar up on the screen while browsing?

Secondly, the use of tagging in order to organize bookmarks (aka delicious) would be SENSATIONAL. Find all your bookmarks related to "recipes" or "surfing" by typing it in the search, or clicking that tag.

I will be updating my computer soon, but will have to abandon the new Safari unless it can be more friendly to those of us with more than a dozen bookmarks. :(

Wow. I had no idea anyone even used bookmark sidebars! To each his, own I guess. Almost every other browser has one.

What developer tools does Safari 4 have built in? Anything like Firebug, which I use a lot in my line of work?

(I'm too scaredy to download the beta.)

Well, maybe I'm just OCD, but how the heck do you organize all your bookmarks then? Lump them all in one folder?

Are we using different Safari browsers? When I click on the bookmark icon just under the Back button, I see a whole Bookmark interface where I can create bookmark folders and organize my thousands of bookmarks quite easily in Safari 3.

When I want to add a bookmark, I just click the + icon and can choose the folder I want to put it in.

Most others end up on delicious.com.[/QUOTE]

I've tried delicious briefly. It seemed to geared towards the whole concept of sharing links (as opposed my primary goal of just organizing them), so I didn't think it would work for me.

Maybe I should give it another go at some point. Right now I'm using an add-on called "webnotes" though (which uses tags), and it seems to work with the new beta.

Thanks for the link. This is going to sound really "nitpicky" but Safari's extra step of having to click on an icon to see all my bookmarks is what "gets my goat." Sure, it doesn't seem like a big thing, but if you bookmark as much as I do, imagine multiplying that "extra step" by 100, if not 200 times a day.

Yeah, I know you can organize the folders on the top bar too, but sticking new bookmarks in the right folder (if it happens to be nested or in folder #13) is a pain in the butt!

Regardless, I could forgo the whole sidebar issue if Safari just had some place to enter a "comment" for a bookmark, or utilized tags or keywords. That way I could find whatever bookmark I needed.
