Apple Announces Self Service Repair Program, Starting With iPhone 12 and 13

Huhhhh. But really, can’t you imagine the amount of screaming complainers when they try to fix themselves and they break something? Maybe Apple was trying to protect us from ourselves by leaving the repairs to the professionals (repair shops, apple store, anyone that knows what they’re doing).

The everyday person should not be attempting to replace a screen or replace a battery……. I’m not so sure this is an overall good thing, but the alternative of NOT allowing people to repair themselves isn’t good either.

Oh well. I hope the instructions are VERY good, and there are lots of warnings about “you very well might break something. Are you prepared for that?”

I think I'll continue to pay for applecare and just go to the apple store or request express replacement when needed. I would do more harm than good if I tried this stuff myself. Obviously I am not the key demographic this program is for.

Damn Tim. First you finally give us the MacBook Pro's we've all wanted for year's and now THIS!? Merry Christmas indeed... Wait.... Quick, someone check whether Santa Clause has switched places with Tim Cook.... No... Nevermind. Actually don't... It's better this way :p

Wow, didn’t expect that!

That is a nice surprise. I will probably still use the Apple repair centers. Removing and replacing the display is tricky with reattaching the display connector due to how small it is. I try to replace the battery and end up needing the display replaced.

I admit that I did a double-take myself but assuming it's true, follow the money, folks.

Apple would only do this if it thought it would make contribution to its bottom line; I can't imagine the parts will be available at anything other than Apple premium pricing. It also smacks of Apple trying to get ahead of/steer any forthcoming legislation from Washington or Brussels.

And for those who think they can do it themselves and mess it up...well, Apple can't be held responsible for that but will happily sell you a shiny new device (in addition to the part you just paid for/wasted). Of course, after trashing your old device, you might then be prepared to shell out for AppleCare for the new device too. It's a win/win/win!*

Seriously, this has to be a good thing and, especially when it comes to modern batteries, a lot of people will be happier buying a reliable and safe product from Apple.

Now, how to unstick that battery adhesive... ?

*All three wins for Apple.

I doubt it will be much less cheaper than ASP. If it is cheaper it will be due to no warranty for damage during self service repair.

On the bright side we get access to certain original parts and without having to wait for a long service time.

This is Apple's way of compromising with demands for third-party repairs while at the same time sticking it to them because some customers would no longer need to go to these third-party repairs anymore.
