Would be interesting to know what portion of these are pre-orders versus walk-up sales.

Anyways, only 18 million to go to catch the Snuggie.

Impressive sales, I wasn't expecting it to sell that much.. I think its that thing of you just gotta have it, whether you need it or not.. I think it most caters to people who read, and I guess I didn't think of it, but taking an ipad with you is easier then taking many books with you.. along with that you get the wifi, movies, music..

But I'm not a fan of the ipad, mainly because the pricing is far too high, you could get a Core i3 laptop for the same price.. The pricing should've been around $329US, I'm pretty sure its supposed to compete with netbooks..

No doubt Apple has a head start. But then it did in 1984. Windows almost killed it a decade later. Google is like a tsunami. With its open environment and friendly attitude towards developers it sits in the same spot Windows once did - ready to swamp Apple and the iPad.

You really think Google is open and friendly, they're a business, wait and see! Ready to swamp Apple and the iPad, wait and see!

Do you think Apple is going to stand still?

Oh, just check out Engadget.
- blame it again on Apple's fanboys who will buy anything Apple without even needing it
- morons are buying it
- hype (again)
- Apple is making it up/PR stunt
- compare it to the sales of PC consoles and say 2M is nothing - which is quite funny - everyone compares the iPad to whatever suits them (phone, laptop, pc tablet, gaming console, etc.) and finally they regroup all the missing features from all the comparisons and say that this why the iPad sucks

Just wanted to point out that first two points are likely the same :p Rest is well - subjective.

Considering that the products you mentioned are all vapourware... I'd say that iPad has won something.

Declaring iPad a winner after less than two months is very premature. It's like declaring the Mac the winner in June 1984. By June 1994 Mac was irrelevant. It took a miracle to bring Apple back to where it is now. And do you think Steve will be around in 2020 working at Apple in any significant capacity? Doubtful.

Two million is nice but iPad is not a sure success in the long run. There is a lot of work to do.

You really have a warped perception about Google.

Google is ultimately hostile to anyone who helps make them money.

Lol, I know.

I would disagree here :)

Bad comparison. Different times, different devices, different consumers, etc. When you have a niche market like this one, and you are selling good numbers fast and first, and your competitors are backing out, you surely are winning something.

This "magic" is getting really old. I never looked it as magical even when it was announced. Just a larger more capable iPod touch that was more responsive. Thats it.

ipod touch ~ iphone. So how come I only use my iphone for calls and sms now?

And how come I only use my iMac for coding and graphic design now? People that hate on the iPad are obviously ignorant. Try using one for a week and get back to me.

By my maths, the "US only" iPad launch has been significantly more successful than the US launches of the PS3 and Xbox360 too. By any standards, it's a fantastic success.

For another comparison, U.S. launch day sales of the Nintendo64 were reported to be half a million. But it was less than half the price of the cheapest iPad, and came with Super Mario 64.

So the iPad is on track to be within the sales magnitude range of the top selling game consoles. Must be nice for iPhone game developers.

People talk about need a lot on this forum but really that's a none issue our society has little to do with need an more about want. Do people need automatic transmissions, fast food grocery stores 3 full bathrooms in a single house air conditioning (maybe for new poorly designed residential housing) need is not something to be thinking about but want and people want an iPad and so do I.

I will be living next to a library.

I think this is actually quite bad news for everyone, save a few who benefit financially from this product selling well (like shareholders or application developers).

The problem is that it's not really that good a product. It's missing many critical features, and while people can say "oh I won't use that", how long is it going to be before Apple is releasing another product without something you want because everyone bought the last one anyway? Remember the FireWire ports going missing on MacBook Pros fiasco?

It could do so much more and with such little effort. Things it doesn't have like Flash, USB and multitasking could be very easily added, but were omitted for reasons unknown. This not only has an effect on Apple's product, but as the new 'market leader' in this segment, it dictates what all the other products on the market have as well. Apple has set the bar, it's not very high, but once again the better products will be sidelined because of the hype surrounding this device.

We as consumers are missing out on the best technology around because of the way iPod, iPhone and now iPad have been marketed. It's such a shame because I would LOVE to see what some of the talented developers working on iPhone applications could do if they had the hardware that is available in other smartphones.

2 Million?

I have been waiting for 10 days for a 3Gs.
Where is all of this inventory?

Ahhh the magic of a giant iPod Touch that can't display the thousands of Flash sites. That's some lame magic.

Seriously, is the lack of flash really that big of a deal? So you can't see some videos in a particular website. Big deal. Any time that has happened to me, I just got to YouTube and invariably i can find the video in about two seconds. Not having flash is such a non-issue. It seems to be more of a rallying cry for all the apple haters out there.

It's an analogy. It's not a direct comparison. The point is that two months is too soon. The competition is not backing out. They are retooling. There's a big difference.

Right. That's the poor business judgement that has them in a position where they are almost printing money

Apple is printing money faster than Google so they sure ain't making any more wrong business decisions than Google!

lets see.... Google Market Cap $154.67 B, Apple at $233.74B.......I would say that is a statistically significant difference.

I have used the iPad now for two weeks. The absence of flash is refreshing on many sites due to no moving ads etc. On some news-sites video will not play, but the dedicated news apps are better than the internet websites anyway.

I found that in most if not all cases the absence of flash is a good thing. Haven't missed it at all.

it is true but I'm pretty sure apple has learnt from the mistake of the past. About Google not sure is or would ever be a tsunami, Android is given away for free and with all the Legal issues around Google right now I don't think we will see swamp Apple anytime soon!

Steve Jobs is a master!!!!!!!!!!!!!

iPad 2nd Gen

I really do want one but have forced myself to wait for 2nd generation - I came in to the Apple market a bit late and have only purchased 2nd gen+ devices.

It's killing me.

Maybe you should start a blog and maybe you should start reading the news. iPhone OS 4 will be available for the iPad in the fall with multitasking as a free upgrade. USB? Get a USB adapter kit and you can plug in your camera via USB, a keyboard or a USB headset. You can even plug in an iPhone and import the photos taken from it to the iPad. Flash is an issue for Adobe to solve as Flash is not available for Android yet and even the beta demos had major problems with performance.

It is *not* a big iPod Touch because it's operating system is designed specifically for it's screen and intention. If they had simply inflates what runs on the iPod Touch it would be nowhere near as great an experience. Similarly, any Android device which simply throws the Android phone OS on a larger device is going to be trash compared to the iPad. Google needs to design/copy a new experience for tablet devices, and even if they do get this right, I wouldn't expect it to be nice for some time—Apple takes their time and makes the experience incredible; Google rushes it out the front door to check off a feature on a feature list. These devices are more than a list of features; they are an experience.

As for Flash, it actually wouldn't be bad for us if Apple allowed a ClickToFlash type system. We could use it when we wanted and ignore everything else. Sure, it would trash the battery, but we could weigh that against our own interests. It doesn't make sense for Apple to do it, though, because Flash is not necessary for their devices to be successful, because most of their users wouldn't understand the instability and battery loss, and because it really is in Apple's interest to diminish Adobe's role on the internet. Adobe has not been good to non-Windows platforms with Flash.

And as a web designer, I have no tears to shed for Flash.
