does anyone know if you need iOS 10 to run watchOS 3? I'm tempted to beta my Watch, but not so much my Phone...

Yes, you'll need iOS 10 on your phone before you can install watchOS 3...

Only thing i picked up from the keynote that was mind-blowing.

That's annoying, I'll test iOS 10 on dev phone and see if I will risk putting on my main phone (which will probably be a no)

I'm not buying a second watch with the watch 2 hopefully round the corner!

I have to say, I am breathing a sigh of relief today. I always believed in the Apple Watch's core concept (notifications, exercise, timepiece/fashion), but was disappointed with the execution. Too slow to load data, too many taps/swipes/scrolls, takes way too long to do anything for a device that's competing with your phone for precious seconds. I was afraid Apple would be too prideful to course correct.

watchOS 3 fixes 80 percent of my complaints: instant app loading, up-to-date data, faster watch face switching, faster "get one thing done quickly" app design (e.g. start timer, begin workout). Emergency calling and breathing meditations also seem neat.

My only lasting complaint is that complications require too many tradeoffs. I wish they could swap out intelligently, such as (optionally) only displaying a timer if you actually have a running timer. Or displaying a sports score if my team is playing, but switching to weather or something else on days without games.

Anyone think Apple Watch 2 is going to come in the Fall ? I want to think that but I feel there would've been alot more leaked by now if that was the case. Probably next year ?

It's possible that the Apple Watch could be planned for Fall but won't leak as early as the iPhone, due to smaller demand and shorter lead time at the factory. Alternatively, it seems desirable for Apple to have spring announcements to counterbalance the summer/fall-centric products - so maybe April 2017?

The Watch is a companion to the iPhone, and so much of its acceptance depends on whether it actually makes a persons life easier than pulling the iPhone out of their pocket. When the apps are slower than just pulling out your phone, that takes a lot of the usefulness out of it, especially considering the cost. And that's why at a minimum, Apple should have made great pains to get the responsiveness right from the start, particularly in relation to the iPhone, and the competition. There's studies on the internet that show customers will shop on a different website if it loads too slowly. The same is true for an iPhone accessory. I had assumed that the processor was the problem with the current watch, as did many others ... what's stunning from today's revelation is that it's not. It was the software all along. But now they've fixed it, so great. But I do wonder how many potential customers were turned off by how slowly the watch ran, and passed on it. It's a legitimate question.

I do like the 911 button. And it has me re-thinking the watch for my Mom. However, I do wonder what happens when you can't push the button, because of a fall or unconsciousness. I see this more as a silent alarm in some respects, though when the 911 operator comes on, there goes the silence ... I also wonder how likely an accidental button press might be. I've certainly reached into a cabinet, or otherwise pressed up against something, and pressed buttons on my watches before. Hopefully the countdown is linger than most such accidental presses.

I really hope Minnie Mouse was a tease of things to come. I doubt they'd release watch faces during WWDC anyway. There's going to be a whole store associated with it, and will really have the greatest impact during the Watch 2 keynote. Considering the rumors of how little may change, they sort of need all they can get to make the announcement special. I wonder if the new faces will be restricted to the Watch 2, requiring some kind of new watch face co-processor? Otherwise the incentive to upgrade will be minimal -- think about it: a simple software upgrade seems to have removed the speed issue many thought was processor related, so if it runs new watch faces, then what's left, assuming no new fresh design? A barometer? GPS (which not everyone needs)? A FaceTime camera (which not everyone wants)?

Smart complication switching would be great.

Sadly I still see no indication of providing the possibility for displaying digital seconds on the digital watch faces. The digital watch faces are all useless for me at present because of the lack of displaying the time with seconds.

Really great features and finally a use for the friends button.

I wonder how many comps can we have on custom faces?

I'm one of those that uses the Friends button for quick access. Does watchOS3 mean that's gone now? They didn't address it from what I saw of the presentation.

Adding more comps on faces would be nice. Wonder if it applies to just a handful of them. Disappointed if that's all we get with new faces we get. Really hoping for new clock face layouts and hands.

Did see a number of features/changes that I thought would be nice. Like not having to always hit the reply button on iMessages received. Really like the Squiggle.

As for the 911 feature, obviously if you are unconscious not much anyone can do about it. A neighbor of ours fell and couldn't do much but crawl a bit, might have helped her. Unfortunately we live in a world where life-threatening situations arise and a feature like this would be fast and require little other input from you to get help sent, unlike a messaging app.

I feel the fact that there were zero leaks is a decent indicator that we won't have anything slated for this year. Obviously this is just a hunch, but "everything" Apple gets leaks, if not in the physical form, the "rumor that spreads like wildfire" form.
There weren't zero leaks, a few things did leak:
  • Siri coming to the Mac (or did Apple even announce that some time ago?)
  • Siri being opened for third-party developers
  • Music getting a visual and UI overhaul
  • Log into your Mac via other devices (or was that just speculation that turned out to be correct?)

I was referring to leaks of a second generation Apple watch...
[doublepost=1465858536][/doublepost]
it only took them 3 iterations of the os...
Exactly why I, and I assume some others, don't ahve Apple Watches. We have been waiting for it to get good. It might be there now.

Same here, I'm always taking accidental pictures. I'm hoping this 911 feature can be disabled. Seems strange to dedicate a button to that anyway...
The button isn't dedicated to it. A single press brings up the 'Dock' with the apps. And a long press still brings up other options (presumably those a long press does in watchOS 1 & 2). After those options come up you have to keep pressing the button another couple of seconds.

This was my favourite part of the keynote. It fixes many of the issues with the Watch. The potential is there but it always fell short because apps didn't launch immediately or were hard to get at. Apple recognized this by focusing on the Watch as a glanceable device.

I wonder what happened to the app grid. Is it still launched by clicking the digital crown? The side button should have been reserved for this, not a 911 function. Clicking once would show the dock, clicking and holding would launch the app grid for less used apps. Double clicking should remain for Wallet/ApplePay.

The digital crown should be reserved for navigation. Scrolling and selecting. Scroll through options and press to select/enter. Press and hold to return to the watch face.

I think the more you rotate the crown the more likely you will be to wear out the gasket around it and end up with problems. So side button and swipe makes sense to me.

Which is kind of funny because they say watchOS 3 works with iOS 9 beta and then say you're required to have iOS 10 beta, all on half a page.

It's possible to get around this by creating the same watch face but with different complications. In watchOS 3.0, it's now just a swipe away.

There was speculation about being able to log in to your Mac using Touch ID from your phone. This version uses your Apple Watch. Maybe it was canned at the last moment?
