I was expecting far less so quite pleased and excited with the update. The next Apple Watch should concentrate more on improved battery and native apps and less dependence on Bluetooth which seems a PIA and major limiting factor in the OS being sluggish at times, espeically th 3rd party apps.

Does anyone that have the beta can check to see if there have been additional workouts added to the workout app?

no new watch with GPS, NO BUY for me.....
I am sure Apple will survive!
Still no custom watch faces? What are they scared of?
Scared that you'll make the Hermes face, and make their expensive model obsolete ;)
How do we get to our friends now? I do think the dock will be more useful, but did I use Friends from time to time.
I have the same question too!!
why do we have to wait till fall?
Because it is in early beta stage and riddled with bugs!

Looks like they don't want you to put a Rolex etc face on it, when they can make money out of an exclusive deal...As shown with Hermes edition. Greed is the simple answer.

Does this mean they are probably not coming out with another watch this year.

I kinda hope they don't. I don't see the point in an incremental release. I would prefer Apple really put some tech muscle and R&D behind watch 2.0.

With Apple Watch only being 13 months old, I can't see Apple really bringing a lot new to the table in such a short time frame.

I will be very wrong, but selling the watch in the "jewelry" segment makes it harder to sell 1 a year, a watch is something that normally last years!!!

Now a new one every 2 2.5 years could make more sense, I am sure they do not expect lots of upgraders if they do a year to year update.

That's probably a factor as well. Personally I think the whole "jewelry" segment was idiotic. Doubly so if it is curtailing innovation.

My gut feeling is that the current hardware has untapped potential. It'll be interesting to see how the new software improves the user experience.
We are running 2-3 years old HW (the iMac beign probably the only exception) and you think there 's untapped potential?

I drink the Apple Kool aid a lot, but it would be an understatement to say that we have outdated computers.

I've always just used Siri to send short texts: "Hey Siri, tell Bob I'm on my way", done.

Is Switzerland still in trouble?
Perhaps:

It’s Official: Smartwatch Sales Have Exceeded Swiss Watch Sales

The human body is exceedingly old "hardware" and just look at all the clever new things humans keep achieving. :)

It's not what you've got, it's how you use it.

Actually, it's more like getting the iPhone 10000 in year 8000 BC, and sticking with the same model until now because of how much untapped potential it has.

But the watch isn't like that though. Not in any way.

Your analogy does not make any sense, there's nothing in the computer world that is even remotely as powerful and complex as the human body, we are definetly NOT old hardware, ever heard of evolution?

Many cells of the human body have a turnover between 4 to 10 days also, so there's nothing old, we could instead say that you are upgrading yourself as we speak!

Am I the only one concerned that SOS will be triggering all kinds of false 911 calls? I mean my watch takes about 5 accidental screenshots per day...who knows what could cause the side-button to be depressed for more than 3sec...

Great idea - though I think the execution should be slightly different. The rest of the updates were phenomenal.

I don't own an Applie Watch yet, I've been waiting to see how it evolves. I like watches but stopped wearing them about 5-6 years ago, I have several really nice watches but just realised I wasn't really looking at them for the time, for some reason I would check my phone instead! I would like a smart watch, I'm very interested in the health stuff Apple are steadily bringing in, I have some significant health conditions and I'd like to be able to track a few things. I am worried about accidentally dealing 999 (in the UK) though, so I'd like to know exactly how the process works. I can't imagine Apple didn't consider accidental calls though...

I'm also interested in the breathe app/function. Many may think it's funny, I expected lots of jokes about Apple telling us to breathe, but I help people suffering from stress, anxiety and ill health to manage their conditions. Breathing is a big part of this, and you'd be amazed how many struggle to regularly take a little time to stop and take some deep breaths. It's good for all of us, not just those with health needs - hopefully more will try it!

As I understand, you have to long press the side-button, swipe the SOS-Button there and hold that swipe for at least 3 seconds, before it calls 911. I don't know if that could happen accidentally like the screenshot thing. But I also don't know if that's always possible to do in a real emergency!

That sounds harder to do accidentally, however I do agree it won't always be easy to do if you need to call the emergency services.

Same here, I'm always taking accidental pictures. I'm hoping this 911 feature can be disabled. Seems strange to dedicate a button to that anyway...

They're not dedicating a button to it. You long press the button, it brings up the current Power menu, they just added SOS to that menu.

Glances no longer exist independently. Kevin Lynch said that "they're no longer separate". Apps can be glanced at in the dock and they're live as you scroll through. The old glance gesture — dragging up from the bottom — now brings up Control Center.

As for the app grid, it has been omitted from everywhere, including on Apple's site. Given what was said in the keynote and those other indications, it's all but confirmed that the app grid is dead.

Launch an app in 3 ways:

1 - The Dock
2 - Complications
3 - Notifications

You might be able to add as many apps as you want to your dock but like in macOS, you might not want to. Many apps don't have to exist as a standalone app anyway and work best as simple notifications or complications.

That would defeat the purpose of the Dock. The ability to quickly get to the handful of apps you use all the time. Tge app grid needs to remain to get at apps that you only use once in a while.

I hope they update the watch in the fall. I've got a gift card just waiting for it. I may try to get a used one off the Marketplace here to keep myself busy...

I wish the sleep tracking would be included. Considering I have a problem sleeping and the watch does not take long to charge, I would definitely use that feature every day.
I agree, and you can with a 3rd party app. Have you tried Sleep++ or something similar on your watch? It integrates well with the Health app, and it tells you "restful" vs. "restless" sleep as well as if you woke up in the night. I used to use a Jawbone, and that probably gave more detail. But this is working great for me.

Well, yes and no. It relies on motion detection. If you lie awake, but still, that's restful sleep. If you wake and don't move, you're still sleeping. The kind of sensors on a watch will never be able to truly monitor sleep.

They didn't say anything about the app loading background process impact on battery life... I'm thinking there's some tradeoffs...

Probably around about the same as complications now which do the same. Depends entirely if your app needs to get data from elsewhere.

I usually end the day with around 20-30% of battery, I don't mind losing 20% off that for faster apps. I thought they were just going to turbo the processor for booting everything and bring it down again when the app is loaded so this definitely seems more efficient if docked apps are stored in memory and I just need to have a bit of networking to pull back latest data in the background. Presumably it does all the fetching in a oner as well to save on battery.
