3 new watch faces? That's it? I don't need third party faces, I just want Apple to put out a dozen or so new faces. Even if they were just variations on the ones we already have. Why just a Minnie Mouse face for example? Why not Pluto, Donald Duck, Goofy, etc? They seem to be focused on faces that offer new functionality. That's great, but the existing face functionality is great, I just want some different looks.

Last year the focus seemed to be a bit too much on the watch as a fashion device. This shows that they care about the interface, too.
This is ultimately what has held me back. I don't wear watched for fashion (frankly I don't really wear them, period) and so I "needed" a compelling reason to wear a smart watch.

Now to see if I hold out for a hardware refresh or just go with what's available now. Luckily my wife has a watch that I can easily get some first hand experience with. Fitness tracking is at the top of my list, but having apps not be pig slow is up there too.

Are you sure that's all that's coming? I imagine we will get more considering the fanfare. This was just a quick preview, maybe.

Am I the only one concerned that SOS will be triggering all kinds of false 911 calls? I mean my watch takes about 5 accidental screenshots per day...who knows what could cause the side-button to be depressed for more than 3sec...

Great idea - though I think the execution should be slightly different. The rest of the updates were phenomenal.
As I understand, you have to long press the side-button, swipe the SOS-Button there and hold that swipe for at least 3 seconds, before it calls 911. I don't know if that could happen accidentally like the screenshot thing. But I also don't know if that's always possible to do in a real emergency!

I was pleasantly surprised by the watch updates. I'm usually most interesting in macOS updates, but I think the watch was the highlight this year. It felt like after a year of actually using the things they had a much better handle on actual usage. Changing the functionality of the power button is a big win. I have used the originally favorites function exactly zero times in about 9 months.

Its amazing that people can complain about how boring the keynote was or how they put the crappy stuff first... I thought this was the best keynote/announcement since IDK when... All the UI updates are really handsome, added features to messages look fantastic, Siri on macOS is surprisingly interesting, collaborative notes (This makes me strangely excited), tvOS dark mode... Its all great; also its all free which I think is a huge note that we tend to miss.

Heres the thing that makes the most sense to me: its a developers conference, hence APIs and ****. Which Apple has been so much better at that last few years. No hardware and thats fine to me, cuz I think hardware should have its own spotlight.

Oh and BTW the wheel chair stuff and emergency call for watchOS! AWESOME!!!

The app grid appears to be dead. Jay Blahnik gives the hint when talking about the new Breath app:

"Now to get to the app it's easy. You can launch it from the watch face, you can launch it from the dock, or you can launch it from a notification".

Interesting, I must be doing something wrong then since the messages remain on the messages watch app.

Thanks for the feedback.

Ah, you mean in the messages app, I thought you mean the watch face notification messages. Yeah that's not possible in the messages app it seams (not tested in watchOS 3).

I was impressed by what they showed as it addresses some of my biggest complaints about the Apple Watch and why I really don't use mine much. I found it too slow for many things that it was just easier to pull out the iPhone instead.

I'm trying to find confirmation that the app grid is dead. Anyone? Also, do glances still exist beyond control center?

You can since watchOS 1, just press firmly on the notification screen and choose "Clear All".
No. Someone brought this up the last time a "delete all" option was requested. This clears all the new message notifications in your notification screen. It does not delete all of the message threads in your message app.

They didn't say anything about the app loading background process impact on battery life... I'm thinking there's some tradeoffs...

The Watch is idle most of the day, hanging on your wrist doing nothing until you look at it. There has been a lot of idle processor time that could be filled with preloading apps and keeping them in memory ready to turn on instantly when you launch the app.

If there's a trade off, I think that some of the onboard memory will be given to frozen app states, leaving less room for music and fav photos. Those are secondary considerations. Instant app launching and background updates are critical features and the #1 priority.

Really great features and finally a use for the friends button.

I wonder how many comps can we have on custom faces?

I use the friends button all day long. I wonder how I will quickly text people after his update?

Same here, I'm always taking accidental pictures. I'm hoping this 911 feature can be disabled. Seems strange to dedicate a button to that anyway...

It's still early. Apple doesn't cover every new feature of an OS during its announcement. There's going to be another event in the Fall where they'll recap the upcoming OS updates and add new information.

The breathe app is awesome. Looking forward the Apple Watch 2 and watchOS 3 :D

Turns out watchOS 3 had more improvements than I thought it would get. It's actually the part I was most excited about in the keynote. Can't wait to get it on my watch :D

Glances no longer exist independently. Kevin Lynch said that "they're no longer separate". Apps can be glanced at in the dock and they're live as you scroll through. The old glance gesture — dragging up from the bottom — now brings up Control Center.

As for the app grid, it has been omitted from everywhere, including on Apple's site. Given what was said in the keynote and those other indications, it's all but confirmed that the app grid is dead.

Launch an app in 3 ways:

1 - The Dock
2 - Complications
3 - Notifications

You might be able to add as many apps as you want to your dock but like in macOS, you might not want to. Many apps don't have to exist as a standalone app anyway and work best as simple notifications or complications.
