I have decoded the title! :D

Figgered it out, I think.

So, when it says "landmark event", that makes me think of landmarks. Which make me think of GPS. So..... GPS 3G iPhone? Or at least with GPS?:)

isn't it obvious ? they're going paint the bridges white. then name it the iBridge. duhh....steve told me so.

hahaha .. i think they'll refresh all the computer specs (montevina), then release the iphone 2 software and call it the next iphone. or release a 3G version.

maybe connecting the iphone and laptop will give 3G..

i just want a rev b macbook air...

Why exactly should I "not get upset" when it self-enforces its rules I don't like?

Why should I be happy if software does something I don't like?

I was looking forward to writing apps for my iPhone. And now it turns out that after waiting for nearly a year for the iPhone and half a year for the SDK, I _still_ cannot use it.

If you don't understand why that would upset me, I suggest you don't understand how Mac fans work.

OF COURSE I am upset that there is a feature of the iPhone that I cannot use.

There would be no "non-compliant" apps in the wild if Apple simply sold me a key now. And I somehow doubt that there will be fewer "non-compliant" apps around just because keys are sold to Americans first while Europeans have to wait another few months.

And if I told you that I would give you a free piece of software that washes your car and you find out that it comes with a "car emulator" that it washes while washing your real car would cost 99 dollars a year, you would certainly not claim that what I gave you was "free car-washing software".

And if you really wanted the software to wash your car (in fact, you have bought the car because you liked that idea so much) and found out that OTHER people, not you, can make use of the 99 dollars a year service; don't tell me you wouldn't be upset.

Do you really think that a free SDK that targets an emulator is what people expected when they read "free iPhone SDK"?

I certainly didn't expect that after I read "free".

I don't mind Apple charging 99 dollars a year, but I am annoyed that they call it "free" and that they won't sell me the 99 dollars a year key I need to use the SDK in a meaningful way.

I already studied the documentation and experimented a bit. I have a Hello World program running and lots of time this weekend to learn more. (It's St. Patrick's Day Monday.) The only things I am missing is the iPhone (which will be released tomorrow and I pre-ordered one) and the functionality to install the software on the iPhone (which a "free SDK" should provide).

Most of my colleagues at work don't share my enthusiasm for the iPhone. They think like you do: who cares about waiting another few months? A free SDK that targets an emulator is cool enough. Who is interested in writing apps for their telephone?

Well, I am. And I am upset that it is AGAIN delayed.

First it takes a few months to get the iPhone to Europe and Britain, then another few months to get it to Ireland, and then, when the phone is here and the SDK available, I find out that it will be another few months until I can use the SDK with the iPhone.

And you wonder why that would upset me?

Gee...

YAWN

whats really lame is that it is only March 13 and this forum started, the thing isnt till june, this will be a 2k plus thread until the actual even.have fun

Possibility... im leaning towards intel, myself.

The reason I thought AT&T is because lately they have expanded like crazy! With the iPhone and buying out several cell phone companies. They are expanding very quickly. I think intel is happy with where they are. Being the only real processor manufacturer

I'm surprised with all the take of symbolism that no one has made anything of the fact that the existing bridge goes where it always has to the suburbs (pretty well off suburbs from what I understand from visits to that wonderful city and well Apples Core market to date homes, schools and creative types) and the new bridge takes you to the CBD.

Maybe the new bridge isn't just the iPhone,
But a new bridge to enterprise, big business enterprise at that.

I've just done a search on wiki, apple doesnt have a track record of introducing hardware in WWDCs.

So i dont think we will see any MB, MBP Re designs then..which means the next update will be in Macworld 09?

i would say that your scenario is more likely, but i would say that there is actually a decent chance that we will see at least a mb revision. i looked on wiki too and since 2002 apple has released some kind of hardware at WWDC...xserve in 2002, isight and powermac g5 in 2003, cinema displays in 2004, new processors in 2005 (k that one was weak), and 2006 mac pros.

considering this, i would say there is a possibility of a mb and/or mbp revision. (i realize this is not a groundbreaking statement)

An ambiguous Apple message to be deciphered..

Come on people - let's brainstorm this - we got the Something in the Air cryptic message, why not this one?

A landmark event. In more ways than one.
(Picture of 2 Golden Gate bridges)
Everything Mac, everything iPhone.

Landmark definitions:
  • The position of a prominent or well-known object in a particular landscape
  • An event marking a unique or important historical change of course or one on which important developments depend
  • Literally, a geographic feature used by explorers and others to find their way back or through an area.
  • Any conspicuous object that helps establish boundaries
  • A distinctive location or feature that can be used for navigation

So: 3G iPhone, SDK, GPS in/as attachment to iPhone, iTablet, a huge push for multitouch on all Apple computers, ...
Best guess? Big announcements on both the Mac and iPhone front. And the SDK doesn't count hehe.

?

Is anybody listening?

I was complaining about the fact that the SDK was announced as "free" even though it costs 99 dollars a year if you actually use it. (Running apps in an emulator is not "using an SDK".)

Plus the 99 dollar offer won't be available to me (in Ireland) for another few months.

I don't care about the 99 dollars, I am annoyed because the SDK is marketed as "free" (although it isn't) and because Apple tell me that I cannot buy the key for another few months. It's ANNOYING.

If Apple had said the SDK is available for 99 dollars a year PLUS gave me a way to give them that money, I'd be happy.

But instead Apple have chosen to claim that the SDK is free PLUS won't allow me to use it as of yet.

Again, using the SDK to run an app in an emulator is NOT what the SDK is for. It's like a shareware version of the SDK.

When Apple said "free SDK" I was expecting the software required to build and run programs ion my iPhone, NOT an emulator.

And when Apple said "99 dollars a year" I was expecting that I would at least be allowed to BUY it.

Hence I have no great expectations from WWDC.

Apple said "free SDK" not "free SDK which you'll be able to run apps on your iPhone". There's a difference and maybe you and people like you should take words at face value and not place your own interpretation on the meaning. The SDK is free by all ways that free means. No one had to pay for it. As for your gripe about not being able purchase a license because of your geographic region that also a poor argument. Anyone can purchase (or in this case download) something from another country but that doesn't mean that you will be able to utilize all the features of it that users in that country experience. Suck it up.

we got a quick one folks..... no **** its photoshopped, im sure we would hear about another golden gate bra.

golden gate bra?!?

is that new in beach blanket babylon? the hats got old?

interesting. but rather pointy. madonna designed?

Maybe Apple won't split into two this year or the next five years. But something like IBM has done (selling all pc-manufacturing business to Lenovo) isn't unthinkable. or splitting up and then selling parts of itself to another company.

No, I would say that's pretty unthinkable. unless John Sculley is taking over again?

Oh, oh... they've built another Golden Gate Bridge!? Sweet!

Seriously though, lets not speculate on the two bridges all the way until June... the only thing I see here is that Apple has a good marketing department.

quite the contrary to your liking, i want nothing else than to contemplate the meaning of the image on the invitation. at first glance i didnt even realise the bridges were parting, my second responce was WOW how californian of them. when i finally noticed that they spread i thought: are they meant to be coming together or splitting apart. considering feng-shui and the characteristic of things to travel from left to right as things on the left expand and things on the right contract(ignore reference if boggled) it would seem they are splitting and defying traditional feng-shui fundamentals. the other more prominet componed is the fact that they are together in the front and apart in the back, typicly humans move forward, so the sphychologicle implication is that they are moving apart.
my greater question is why make this the theme of the invitation, whether signifying 2 roads convergerjing or two roads splitting. my socks arent rocked either way. and frankly splitting is a very isolating and scary concept, what if i was a OSX and an iphone developer?. i then must choose, hopefully the confrence was scheduled in way that people could partake of bolth. but frankly i think iphone should have its own conference. and in the spirit of catering dual developers why not have them back to back. this provides a financial incentive for those travelling long distances.
so concerning bridges as a choice here, i am only impresed by the notion that many will drive over that exact bridge when visiting cupertino. but i dont think separation is a good ploy, and if these bridges are meant to signify union they do so very poorly.

Given that the original iphone scored such an enormous success it is without a doubt a landmark for Steve and co. So its not hard to imagine that the second coming of the iphone will be a new landmark, the second golden bridge. What's got me baffled is what the iphone 2.0 is going to connect between. I mean, we all know the first iphone linked the OSX with the mobile world but what about this new one?
Its actually quite a clever metaphor but ever since the "Something's in the Air" got cracked i can't help but think Apple are trying to mislead us with these sorta things.
Hhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ;)
