Seems pretty obvious to me that the two bridges are just saying developers need to have parallel development of their apps...one version for Macs and the other for iPhones.

2 big announcements. both coming from, well uhh, apple and going to us the consumers. to get there there is a need for a bridge, or two, and those bridges are the connection between one land mass (apple) and another (me!). this is a developer based conference, so the developers are clearly part of the ever symbolic bridge.

actually im not looking at this invitation that symbolically, i think its just eyecatching photoshop that sets the precedence for something monumental from apple. could be wrong.

im surprised more people arent talking about possible mbp or mb revisions, since there was a big thread about possible laptop revisions in june

ZOMG!!!!!!!11!!!eleventy-one!1!!

you mean they didn't build a bridge and shoot it?

NOES!

what else are they not telling us!!!!11!

you wouldn't believe my easily pursuaded friend...you wouldn't believe....

oh and anyone else notice that it ends on a friday? friday the 13th!?! hmmmm...:p

also, on a completely unrelated note, friday the 13th is the day i graduate high school. ohhh boyy.

It happens the week after I graduate (day after my graduation party) so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for
1. MB update (processor and or cosmetic)
2.Back to School campaign
3. New iPod?

so exciting. I wish I could go.

lol. i know right. READ!

What happens when they run out of cats to name the OS?
I mean, a Lion is at the top of the food chain.
They could still use the code names Couger, Lynx, Bobcat and Kitten. Mac OS X Lion just doesn't have nice ring to it. I hope Couger is the code name for 10.6.

meh, two bridges, if this is iPhone and Mac, then what about iPod? or is iPod on a boat down below?

iPhone/iPod touch = the next generation iPod + extras. The iPod classic will, of course, eventually be phased out when NAND prices drop and 1.8" harddrives become obsolete. The only reason you can still buy the iPod classic is because 160GB NAND is way too expensive, and a touch screen + 1.8" harddisk draws too much power.

The second bridge symbolises not just the iPhone, but the touch platform itself...

Is anybody listening?

I was complaining about the fact that the SDK was announced as "free" even though it costs 99 dollars a year if you actually use it. (Running apps in an emulator is not "using an SDK".)

Plus the 99 dollar offer won't be available to me (in Ireland) for another few months.

I don't care about the 99 dollars, I am annoyed because the SDK is marketed as "free" (although it isn't) and because Apple tell me that I cannot buy the key for another few months. It's ANNOYING.

If Apple had said the SDK is available for 99 dollars a year PLUS gave me a way to give them that money, I'd be happy.

But instead Apple have chosen to claim that the SDK is free PLUS won't allow me to use it as of yet.

Again, using the SDK to run an app in an emulator is NOT what the SDK is for. It's like a shareware version of the SDK.

When Apple said "free SDK" I was expecting the software required to build and run programs ion my iPhone, NOT an emulator.

And when Apple said "99 dollars a year" I was expecting that I would at least be allowed to BUY it.

Hence I have no great expectations from WWDC.

Based on how I read your post, looks like you just want someone to get into an argument with you. At least that is what I get from your tone.

Sorry not biting.

you guys are worse than Lost viewers! :)

In SF where the WWDC is held, the Gate Bridge is a landmark.

"A landmark event. In more ways than one."

Hence, two landmarks. One for "Everything Mac" and the other for "Everything iPhone." Or one existing landmark and the other - the Apple conference.

You see what they did? They made two versions of the most famous landmark in SF. That's the whole concept. They aren't thinking beyond that. If it was in Seattle, they'd have two space needles etc.

The pre-release is just that. I suspect the benefit of having a unified code base in June when the real bug fix and feature update release happens is one factor, as well as not having "non-compliant apps" in the wild before they are registered, etc.

With Apple, they are a closed system and they disclose that. Do not get upset when you want to use it then it self-enforces its rules you don't like.

Why exactly should I "not get upset" when it self-enforces its rules I don't like?

Why should I be happy if software does something I don't like?

I was looking forward to writing apps for my iPhone. And now it turns out that after waiting for nearly a year for the iPhone and half a year for the SDK, I _still_ cannot use it.

If you don't understand why that would upset me, I suggest you don't understand how Mac fans work.

OF COURSE I am upset that there is a feature of the iPhone that I cannot use.

There would be no "non-compliant" apps in the wild if Apple simply sold me a key now. And I somehow doubt that there will be fewer "non-compliant" apps around just because keys are sold to Americans first while Europeans have to wait another few months.

And if I told you that I would give you a free piece of software that washes your car and you find out that it comes with a "car emulator" that it washes while washing your real car would cost 99 dollars a year, you would certainly not claim that what I gave you was "free car-washing software".

And if you really wanted the software to wash your car (in fact, you have bought the car because you liked that idea so much) and found out that OTHER people, not you, can make use of the 99 dollars a year service; don't tell me you wouldn't be upset.

Do you really think that a free SDK that targets an emulator is what people expected when they read "free iPhone SDK"?

I certainly didn't expect that after I read "free".

I don't mind Apple charging 99 dollars a year, but I am annoyed that they call it "free" and that they won't sell me the 99 dollars a year key I need to use the SDK in a meaningful way.

I already studied the documentation and experimented a bit. I have a Hello World program running and lots of time this weekend to learn more. (It's St. Patrick's Day Monday.) The only things I am missing is the iPhone (which will be released tomorrow and I pre-ordered one) and the functionality to install the software on the iPhone (which a "free SDK" should provide).

Most of my colleagues at work don't share my enthusiasm for the iPhone. They think like you do: who cares about waiting another few months? A free SDK that targets an emulator is cool enough. Who is interested in writing apps for their telephone?

Well, I am. And I am upset that it is AGAIN delayed.

First it takes a few months to get the iPhone to Europe and Britain, then another few months to get it to Ireland, and then, when the phone is here and the SDK available, I find out that it will be another few months until I can use the SDK with the iPhone.

And you wonder why that would upset me?

Gee...

OS 11:rolleyes:

As opposed to the people who suddenly don't mind when Apple delays a product or feature?

Oh, please. I am angry, yes.

Take a Mac fan, any Mac fan. Let's use one who waited for a G5 laptop back in the days. Tell him that you don't see why he is upset that Apple STILL didn't make one after two years. I might lead to an argument, yes.

I have many friends who are Mac fans. Not a single one of them is not upset about the renewed delay of the SDK (with, again, full functionality).

This bunch here were the first Mac fans (or so it is implied) I ran into who apparently didn't mind.

Maybe Steve will turn around and say that it was a mistake not to sell developer registrations to Europeans immediately?

Remember that's how the SDK was released. At first Apple said Web apps are enough. But everyone was disappointed. (You can watch the keynote. It was VERY obvious that everyone expected better.) Hence he announced the SDK. And he disappointed again.

He doesn't seem to understand that people/developers wanted to develop native applications for the iPhone. And it seems like he is finding more and more ways to delay it.

I wonder what he will announce in two months. What further delay will there be?

Bridges

OMG APPLE IS MAKING ANOTHER GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE?!?!? haha, kidding. I like the metaphor though, very good use of visual metaphors.

I think WWDC 08 will be really great. Developments will be mainly on the iPhone SDK, and also Leopard.

But Mac OS X 10.6? Sneak preview WWDC 09. No earlier.

2008 will be mainly a year of consolidation for Apple. No 3G iPhone. No 10.6. No major product revisions.

So kill the hype now!, before you all work up to 3G iphones, and touchscreen imacs, and 10.6 previews. Not gonna happen :)

Peace and God Bless!

Hey hey.....are you steve jobs?

but honestly, i think its too early for a OS 11 preview, more like WWDC 09.
I've just done a search on wiki, apple doesnt have a track record of introducing hardware in WWDCs.

So i dont think we will see any MB, MBP Re designs then..which means the next update will be in Macworld 09?

I hope to see new MacBook Pro's at the WWDC. The current ones are just a shade faster than the MacBook's. I had ordered a MacBook pro with a 2.6GHz and a 200Gb 7200rpm drive, but yesterday I cancelled it. Because it's just not much of an upgrade from the previous one.
