Err. You're either being ironic or you don't know what you're talking about.

It's free. It's available now. Download it if you can code.

Did you download it?

It seems one needs a key to upload compiled applications to an iPhone.

The key costs 99 dollars a year, or so the Apple site says.

I cannot try it out until the weekend so. If it turns out that the SDK is usable (beyond running applications in the emulator), I will have been wrong.

"Well, if Apple didn't make it clear in their video, or on their website, you must pay the $99 (standard) or $299 (enterprise) in order to transfer an application to an iPhone for testing."

It is only 99 dollars per year if you want to install the app on your iPhone to test it. All the tools to download are free. They even include a desk emulator for the iPhone.

so exciting. I wish I could go.

lol. i know right. READ!

What happens when they run out of cats to name the OS?
I mean, a Lion is at the top of the food chain.

Simple: GO GREEN

OS X 10.6 CARBON FREE.

It works both for the Environment and announcing a Cocoa OS X Only Development Environment for Native Applications.

Trolltech C++ Qt Toolkit 4.5 will be 64 bit Cocoa ready. Carbon will be complely removed.

There's no clarification yet on free apps.

This is an SDK, Apple are encouraging devs to share their finished creations by offering a hosting deal. Until then there's an emulator (or jailbreak).

If you want free and OSS then look into Android. A model that's possibly closer to what you seem to want.

Assuming Jobs is doing a keynote again, what's the cheapest ticket package in order to see the keynote?

I went to MacWorld this year, I know this show is quite different.

Is anybody listening?

I was complaining about the fact that the SDK was announced as "free" even though it costs 99 dollars a year if you actually use it. (Running apps in an emulator is not "using an SDK".)

Plus the 99 dollar offer won't be available to me (in Ireland) for another few months.

I don't care about the 99 dollars, I am annoyed because the SDK is marketed as "free" (although it isn't) and because Apple tell me that I cannot buy the key for another few months. It's ANNOYING.

If Apple had said the SDK is available for 99 dollars a year PLUS gave me a way to give them that money, I'd be happy.

But instead Apple have chosen to claim that the SDK is free PLUS won't allow me to use it as of yet.

Again, using the SDK to run an app in an emulator is NOT what the SDK is for. It's like a shareware version of the SDK.

When Apple said "free SDK" I was expecting the software required to build and run programs ion my iPhone, NOT an emulator.

And when Apple said "99 dollars a year" I was expecting that I would at least be allowed to BUY it.

Hence I have no great expectations from WWDC.

In terms of OS 10.6? I doubt anything will be mentioned on this. The most that I can see is a "roadmap" with a name be associated with OS 10.6, but that's about it.
Well, Apple keeps claiming OS X is supposed to be on a 12-18 month release cycle, so they should do some kind of preview for the developers this summer. Since Leopard is released in October, 10.6 should arrive by in early Summer 2009 even if you take a loose definition of 18 months. Of course, it seems more likely that Apple will miss that 18 month window by about a year.

I think the two bridges means just what you see. they'll build two bridges in red. Nice color I guess -- But wouldn't it make more sense if one of them was, I don't know, yellow?

You think I want to use the SDK to write applications that run in the emulator that comes with the SDK?

Is that how you usually use an SDK?

If they had announced a free SDK to create programs for the emulator that comes with the free SDK, I'd find it pointless but OK.

But an _iPhone_ SDK is supposed to target the iPhone.

As it stands, it doesn't; not for free anyway. And not for money either, as Apple won't sell the ability to install the app on an iPhone to Irish developers for another few months.

It's a free piece of software all right, but it is not a "free iPhone SDK". A "free iPhone SDK" would have three features:

1. It's an SDK.

2. It targets the iPhone.

3. It's free.

At the moment it's a choice between a free SDK that doesn't target the iPhone and a non-free SDK that does target the iPhone. And the second option won't be available to Irish developers for another few months.

Apple has announced the dates for the Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) 2008. The event will take place on June 9-13, 2008 in San Francisco, CA at Moscone West.
Apple is offering 3 tracks for developers: iPhone, Mac, and IT. The iPhone focus will certainly be a big part of the WWDC keynote with the recent announcement of the iPhone SDK. The first of the 3rd party iPhone applications will officially launch at the end of June.

Mother of God!

Maybe we could get a little nitpickier. I downloaded the iPhone SDK for free two days ago. I didn't pay a darn thing for it and it's the SDK. It has a fully capable simulator with it, so I have no clue what the bickering is about. It's a beta product anyway, so get over it.

The pre-release is just that. I suspect the benefit of having a unified code base in June when the real bug fix and feature update release happens is one factor, as well as not having "non-compliant apps" in the wild before they are registered, etc.

With Apple, they are a closed system and they disclose that. Do not get upset when you want to use it then it self-enforces its rules you don't like.

Make it work.
