Seriously, I lurk on this site to see if the latest OS update is ok etc and never post because I don't have time. But I've taken the time to log in and comment today because I'm repulsed by the ghoulish, "i have a friend who is a 'docter'" type speculation that Steve Jobs is near death etc on this thread. Anonymous posters trying to bignote themselves on a technology rumors site by predicting the death of someone who has probably achieved more in a few months of sick leave than you have in a lifetime? What kind of lives do people who spread these rumors lead? I think i can guess.

If you really believe Steve is terminally ill, show some respect instead of spreading rumors to impress people on a website forum. If you do have 'inside knowledge' take a good look at the people telling you this stuff and have a think about why they would tell you this kind of information. They're also trying to bignote themselves because they're losers as well. And mentioning Farrah Fawcett? Is this Entertainment Tonight? Just appalling. Especially how she says the media speculation has made it so much harder to go through what she's going through. Ask a real 'docter' about her type of cancer and what she's experiencing.

Clearly these people here spreading this 'information' have never watched a loved one die of cancer, or they're just heartless people. I watched my father-in-law die of pancreatic cancer – he would be around the same age as Steve if he was alive now. His was inoperable. No chance of a whipple procedure etc. for him. Twelve months of hell before death after diagnosis. If Steve is going through the same thing, may whatever god he prays to have mercy on him.

As for the people spreading this stuff. Take a good, long hard look at yourselves. Become a better person and earn some self-respect, because at the moment you look like self-loathing a**holes.

+1, couldn't put better myself!

Apple is headed for a disaster with this WWDC--- and they know it.

This is a DEVELOPER'S CONFERENCE. It's not a press release for new hardware - this is mainly for developers and to give a roadmap/timetable for what future software releases will come. I fully expect them to announce something like iPhone OS 3.0 will be released on some such date like June 25. And I expect a new iPhone to be released on the same day, or near this date. And because the new OS has features in it such as a compass, I fully expect more details about the new phone to come out, but not necessarily a demo of the new phone.

Keep in mind that WWDC is coming on the heels of the Palm Pre release and the reported MS Zune Phone.... say what you will about each product, but they will steal significant thunder from Apple.

Yes. They will all get press. Maybe the Palm Pre will be better SPEC wise, maybe the MS Zune phone will be better SPEC wise. I fully expect the iPhone to still win out on user experience and the AppStore. There is no way that in by the end of the year either the MS Zune or Palm Pre will have as developed an AppStore as the iPhone. The phones themselves might be better, but there would still be competition.

And the Palm Pre may be the iPhone killer, after all.

It's not just specs anymore - but the AppStore will encourage sales of the iPhone - something that the Palm Pre can't do yet.

Rumors suggest minimal changes in iPhone hardware- maybe video recording, a 3mp camera, and a compass... but same screen/form factor/design. Before people argue that the phone is so good that nothing needs to be changed, just remember that tech fans want something NEW-- and this device as good as it is, is stagnating, and others are playing catch up, and Palm Pre may have surpassed the iPhone.

Again - you're right - maybe the SPECS are better on the PalmPre, but SPECS aren't the only thing that sells phones.

Of course iPhone firmware 3.0 will be coming out, but it will not come out at WWDC-- just more info on it wil be released. They are shooting for summer- meaning September.

My gut is that the iPhone 3.0 OS will be released late June / early July along with the phone. My reasoning is that Apple is only allowing submissions of iPhone 3.0 apps to the app store. They are no longer allowing submissions of old 2.x apps.

So what you will be left with is a WWDC, with no Steve Jobs, a lackluster keynote with Phil, no significant change to the iPhone, no firmware release - and newer flashier competitors devices being released around the same time. Oh yeah, and Snow Leopard will be shown, which will be largely under the hood changes, by Apple's own admission, and no significant User Interface changes or bells and whistles to the casual consumer. Snow Leopard isn't the type of thing that is going to generate more press - except in the geeky computer journals.

I completely disagree. YOU might not be happy with it, but I think DEVELOPERS will be, and I think the slight improvements will keep the iPhone on track. Plus, Apple just needs to have a big enough improvement for iPhone 1 users, whose contracts are ending soon, to buy another iPhone instead of keeping their current one.

Apple needs a hail mary pass- so if there is a new tablet style device- it needs to be shown at WWDC.

This is a DEVELOPERS CONFERENCE - this is NOT a hardware conference like MacWorld is/was. I think a tablet-type device might be shown at the end of 2009 or beginning of 2010.

OR Apple needs to release the new iPhone that day.
OR Apple needs to release 3.0 firmware that day.... hopefully it will be bug free.

Otherwise, this Keynote is going to be a disaster.

To naysayers, it might be. To realists, I think it will be a good show.

Neat to see

That's a bit harsh!! he is still a very good keynote speaker.
Anyway, I stand by my belief that Phil will announce a one more thing a Steve will walk onto the stage looking a lot better and possibly holding a new device!

Wouldn't that be something. People would go nutZ over that entrance.

Boring

Used to watch these boring keynote speeches.
Stopped when Jobs introduced the lPhone and said reference the touch controls
" And have we patent it, of cause we have"
l laughed to myself and said tell that to Nokia and Samsung.
The lphone is okay but come on, to expensive and good for what? playing games on now, jesus get a Nintendo Ds and a real Phone with a descent camera that can video etc..Apple is so far far behind times.

It is the Internet in my pocket. I could never go back to using another phone. Only ahead when there is something better, and there isn't right now.

The real unsung hero to me is the Touch. What an amazing little device.

Thank you Steve! It never would have been what it is without his leadership and his insistence that the software be the heart of the device. He got it right where all the phone companies had it wrong.

For me its just having an all-in-one device. It also has one of the better-rendering mobile browsers.

Does not matter who speaks...you guys are nic-pickers.
If the product is hot it will sell itself.

Not a single word on new MacBooks?

Is there nothing in the wings for the MacBook after 8 months?
Are Apple actually waiting for Q3's nextgen processors to revamp anything?
No +0.2GHz or +100GB in June?

What about FireWire 800 coming to the 13" unibody? Mac mini has it!
It's a disgrace! And marketing-speak will not blind me from this either.

Do you mean too expensive? Have you checked the price of HTC handsets lately? Google G1? Storm?

And if the only thing you use in terms of apps is gaming, that's fine. But it can do far more than just that.

And AAPL stock starts to fall rapidly... ;)

the whole market is tanking today, so apple is just following suit. though, i wouldn't be surprised if the geniuses on wallstreet took this into effect for apple's stock in particular.

this makes sense. steve coming back in june doesn't mean he's going to be spending the month of may getting only 4 hours of sleep per night preparing for this thing. he's advising behind the scenes and will make sure the program is ready without having to be the one demoing and conducting everything.

get better steve!! the next 20 years is way more important that if you make this one keynote or not!!

Schiller looks like Balmer and ...

Ah, but can he dance like a man with his pants full of hornets?

Without Jobs, Apple should get a "spokesperson" with great stage presence. The current crop of top end employees just don't have what Jobs has. Remember the iconic 1984 commercial...Jobs didn't throw the hammer, it was an unknown with presence. The world is full of people that are skilled in establishing presence and attention in front of a crowd. They can learn the lines and do a performance worthy of a Steve Jobs substitute.

It may be an issue with space. When I saw iFixit take it apart,it looked pretty crowded in there. If they were to put firewire in there, my guess would be FW800. 400 seems so unnecessary.

If Jobs were not to give it, I would prefer Ive, but Schiller did a good job at Macworld with what he had. Can't wait to see Snow Leopard!

I was really hoping to see Steve back to deliver the keynote. I look forward to seeing what they have in store. Phil does a really good job with the keynotes he is a part of.

if he was on medical leave, WHY would people assume he would be giving the keynote? you don't just walk in and give you speech. like any stage show, the keynote takes weeks if not months of preparation and practice.
