Apple is the only conference that I know of that uses a lottery system to get in. I wonder if they will follow the tradition and preview new iOS and MacOS updates for the keynote itself? Apple Street view ready to preview? Maybe something VR related for a change?

Actually Google I/O tickets are done by lottery as well. They have been for about 4 or 5 years now.

$1599 a ticket..

WWDC17 :

"Technology alone is not enough. Technology must intersect with the liberal arts and the humanities, to create new ideas and experiences that push society forward. This summer we bring together thousands of brilliant minds representing many diverse perspectives, passions, and talents to help us change the world."

Apl Music create "Apl Culture" focus

Honestly, reads like "...and so today we are ditching "i" products and launching a new communal line. Our first product, "kumbaya," the world's first LSD for LCDs. It's truly magical.

Why do we need a 4 month warning for this event? Seems a bit premature for Apple to send out invitations.

Looks like an invite to an Apple Music festival rather than a conference. Hmm...
Looks to me more like a political statement with all the diversity stuff.

No doubt tech geeks that would come to SF for alt conferences and events are bummed. John Gruber said the last time WWDC was in San Jose it was boring.

Build May 10–12, 2017 tickets available for 8 hours at $2,195 each then they sold out. Apl did June to re-jigger parts of WWDC17 after they figured a month should allow a "better message" , they learned they "need time" from last years Studio/Macbook pro within a day HW compared fiasco.

One thing I highly appreciate from Apl is now I can use EDGE on my Surface Pro 4 to watch the yawn fests and not have to dig out of my work bag the old iPad Air they gave me and hardly anyone uses at work...thank you.

I actually have no idea what you are saying.

There's probably a magic eye thing in there

Is there no march event? Or is this just because it's a change of venue.

Only excitement for me would be a xmac with 2-3 3.5" pcie drive bays

Wow, some 6,000 people going for $1,599 tickets. That's nearly $10m just for an event. Nice easy profit for apple, even if it is only a drop in the ocean for its earnings!
It's a week long event if I remember correctly. Also there is alot more than the opening keynote that most of us will watch online.

This is from Apples WWDC invite:

n addition to the keynote address, get-togethers, sessions and labs for developers, Apple is working with the city of San Jose and local businesses to celebrate the return of WWDC with very special experiences around San Jose throughout the week.

Wouldn't surprise me if they throw up some stages and invite a bunch of hip artists and say the whole thing is an Apple Music / Beats1 collaboration.

We're going to see an iOS 11 preview but they won't show things for the next iPhone so the interesting version will be 11.2 probably. Or they throw in alot of new stuff for iPad and it is still interesting..

Not as much as you'd think. You'd be surprised how expensive it is to rent a facility, pay people to manage the events and cook/serve/cleanup. Then you have the special activities these types of events do and the free swag and food. Add in the time lost having employees go and do sessions or help. It probably barely pays for itself with just a bit left over.

Pricing to attend WWDC conference?

I've noticed that previous conferences seem to have a high rate of turnover each year (i.e. >75% new attendees). Is it that the WWDC conferences are useless for developers, too expensive, or both?

Doesn't make it not incredibly overpriced and greedy. Milking customers/developers - it's what they do!
No, it's an average/typical cost for a developer conference. In fact, I'd call it a bit on the cheaper side.

If Apple truly believed in an event that moved the world forward, the WWDC conference would be 95% subsidized by Apple (i.e. almost free to attend) and all places would be merit based for the most promising developers to attend just like the best academic conferences are organized. Purely this is a cash making and hysteria inducing event for Apple. Each year they have become less technical and more like fairly floss, high in sugar.

That is total idealistic baloney. If car makers truly believed that their vehicles are awesome they should subsidize it 95%. If doctors really believed they are making a difference they should only charge 5%. If you believe you're making a difference in the world you should ask for 5% of what you would ask for in compensation.

You are completely wrong on every account.

Business people need approvals from their company to spend the money to go. They need to book hotel rooms and flights. All this takes time.

A ticket to a concert is $100 for 4 hours. This event is 8 hours a day for 5 days. Equivalent to 10 'concerts' in length. Plus you get access to the smartest people in Apple that you wouldn't get access to in any other way. And these people can personally help you sell an app you created, making you thousands of dollars, where without their help in understanding what is wrong, you might languish for another month figuring it out yourself without help.

You don't have a clue as to what this event is, so you knee-jerk and that's why you think it's overpriced and a profit maker for Apple.
