Make it near free and make it merit based entry, only the best and brightest, now and up and coming. That will move development forward. Instead we have loads of casino crap apps on the App Store because too much lacklustre gets through. Total rubbish apps.

Same as above. Apple can afford this and the outcomes would be 1000x better.

They can afford it monetarily, but having good presenters isn't something you can just buy.

Build May 10–12, 2017 tickets available for 8 hours at $2,195 each then they sold out. Apl did June to re-jigger parts of WWDC17 after they figured a month should allow a "better message" , they learned they "need time" from last years Studio/Macbook pro within a day HW compared fiasco.

One thing I highly appreciate from Apl is now I can use EDGE on my Surface Pro 4 to watch the yawn fests and not have to dig out of my work bag the old iPad Air they gave me and hardly anyone uses at work...thank you.

Apple didn't move from May to June as you alluded to. WWDC is always in June. Also, I wouldn't be so proud of Edge, I had to switch from Edge to Chrome to post this message due to Edge locking up. I own a surface also and is isn't the amazing machine you seem to think. It's a good computer, certainly wouldn't brag about it.

The figures are all going about their lives, biking, and socializing without any sort of obvious tech, so perhaps it's about wearables. A watchOS update with more continuity, maybe?

EDIT: there's actually quite a bit of technology shown.

OR along these lines perhaps a preview to AR? Wishful thinking of course, but I like many am very intrigued by the idea of AR although I think it's too early in the game for Apple to announce something in this field.

Again, why? Because you don't want to fork over the money? I don't see any good rationale why it's Apple's responsibily to completely foot the bill here. WWDC is a success as it's designed. And actually the best and brightest need WWDC the least -- they can figure this stuff out on their own and likely have the best support system. But even if "best and brightest" was the benchmark how to you go about that without being cumbersome and costly? Steve Jobs was a serial drop out and misfit. His early career not much to speak of. And intelligence and creativity and not always aligned. Some very smart people have zero creativity. Some terrifically creative people are terrible at math.

The marketplace really does speak here. Those with the will and drive gladly pay for an admission ticket. People get shut out, yes. People get shut out of all sorts of events due to cost or space. Nothing unique about WWDC in that regard.

There's a hostel like a block away from Moscone West/Bill Graham that's about $45/night.
Maybe these "indie developers" of yours could be less bourgeois?

I've stayed in every hostel within 8 blocks for Moscone. there are some good ones but they are $75-$150 a night. I did a $45 a night place once and never again.

Bourgeois? Give me a break. A $100 hotel anywhere else is $250 in SF. These are not fancy hotels.

If Apple truly believed in an event that moved the world forward, the WWDC conference would be 95% subsidized by Apple (i.e. almost free to attend) and all places would be merit based for the most promising developers to attend just like the best academic conferences are organized. Purely this is a cash making and hysteria inducing event for Apple. Each year they have become less technical and more like fairly floss, high in sugar.

Its an 8 day event with courses and engineering. You think this is about the keynote?

With sketchy talk of the iPhone being unveiled at WWDC, it may make more sense after considering the recent rumor of a "touch bar" type chin. That way, developers could begin creating content for that part of the screen.

On a less serious note, looking at the wwdc graphic, perhaps Apple is planning to release their own drone design

Lol, maybe that WAS a stretch... I stayed at the place I'm talking about a few years back, to attend the Outside Lands festival w/ my son.
It really wasn't bad at all... and about $250 for all 5 days!

Let's get this out of the way: The 2017 WWDC keynote was a huge disappointment. Tim Cook should be fired.

Also, for everyone who posts a comment here re: "XYZ hardware better be announced at WWDC or Apple is Doomed (tm)," please shut. the. f. up. WWDC is a DEVELOPER'S CONFERENCE. Let me write that again:

WWDC IS A DEVELOPER'S CONFERENCE.

WWDC

IS

A

DEVELOPER'S

CONFERENCE

Pricing to attend WWDC conference?

I've noticed that previous conferences seem to have a high rate of turnover each year (i.e. >75% new attendees). Is it that the WWDC conferences are useless for developers, too expensive, or both?

The demand vastly outnumbers the available tickets and/or they weight the lottery system towards newer developers. Most developers who want to go simply can't get it in. I'm a longtime developer and have been rejected every year under the lottery system.

Wow this is quite early, especially since they're supposed to be holding a March event as well.

Wasn't there recent issues with the iPad supply chain? If march was even a plan I suspect it's out now, why would you release a new product when your having problems producing one over a year old?

I disagree of course , I will put up my $800 SP4 against anything similar cost. Of course if you feel the need to spend $2K-$4K you should be able to get slightly greater performance and an Apl logo.

It's fine that we disagree. I'm not here to convert people to my way of thinking. If you love the SP4, that's awesome. I own one and my general feeling is, meh. I think it's a pretty good piece of hardware, but it still runs Windows. My preference is MacOS. I own a MBP (late 2013) and it performs great. It will be a workhorse for years to come. I certainly didn't spend $4K on it. I'm not sure how many consumers are spending $4K on any Mac. I'm sure that is a very, very small demographic. Anyway, glad you like your SP4. I guess my only point in even replying to you is my general frustration with people assuming the technology (or any) industry is a zero sum game. For Apple to do well, it doesn't mean Microsoft has to do bad. They can all win or all lose. Have a great day.

Still idealistic baloney. The people making crap apps are not going to WWDC. Most of the attending people are corporate developers doing apps you're never seeing and probably many are never even on the app store but on an internal enterprise distribution.

No reason whatsoever to make this near free or free. And making it merit based? By whose estimation and value?
