8K is useless, but agree 100% otherwise. All the sports leagues need to move to direct streaming. Buy what you want, don't buy what you don't. Broadcast Blackouts are stupid in the age of streaming and hugely expensive tickets (and should be illegal), and they're going to lose an entire generation of fans who don't have a cable package and can't get an RSN otherwise. They're trying to protect a dying business model.
I think Bally et al are doing OTT streaming finally, right? Surely they won’t mess it up with greed and UX self-owns

It doesn’t matter to me whether it’s free or if they charge an arm and leg. Hell, I don’t even care what streaming platform the NFL decides to go with. I’m still going to watch just as many games as I always do. None.

NFL needs to dump broadcast and turn the corner. Go all in on 8K streaming and leave the support for vintage 320p TVs via over the air behind. It's a new day. 8K sports will be almost like being there in person. Do it NFL!

And tell Apple they'll put it on Apple TV+ when the Apple TV hardware supports 8K.

And while they are at it, add in 3D so you can watch it on the Apple VR goggles or a 3D TV (which they could then release). The VR goggles with 3D at 4K or 8K would probably be a good demonstration for them.

If your local CBS affiliate is airing a Garbage Game example Denver VS Houston and you had Sunday ticket for 6.99 everyone who has ST and it will be a large number would look for another game and the local Affiliate loses viewers. They fiqure for $250 a season not as many will sign up and if you do you have you paid for the right to have a choice on the game you see.

Fake news. If it were true it would have nothing to do with protecting CBS and Fox because local games will be blacked out on Sunday Ticket.

If Apple wanted to give this away for $7, the NFL wouldn’t care at all as long as Apple’s check cleared.

This is what happens when tech tries to cover sports. I can make up stuff for clicks too.

CBS and Fox can cut from a game anytime they want. They don’t stay on the garbage game if it’s a blowout unless it’s the local market.

And they cherry pick the best matchups for their games of the week.

It feels like the NFL doesn’t like the idea of their product not costing money, prestige-wise. Like when Apple and the publishers took on Amazon for the concept of $10 ebooks. Is Sportico a tech blog? Could Goodell be lying?

Of all the entertainment options out there to include in Apple TV+ for free the best they could come up with is NFL? It would take nanotechnology to measure my interest in watching the NFL.

Yes but the games People may not want are the local Market games and CBS and Fox has to cover them no matter what.

In many ways the league has lost its mind. Apple has offered them the thing they have always needed. The biggest reason they can’t get more subscribers for Sunday Ticket is the 300 to 500 dollar price. Apple has offered to pay 3 times the price to the league and make the price for customers basically free. The reason they stated as for why they would accept this is not even true. A game is blacked out on Sunday Ticket if it’s available on the local broadcast. There is zero reason why they should not have run quickly to take this giveaway deal that only Apple can afford.

Does this mean that it would be locked to AppleTV+ subscribers? Why would the NFL pick such a small streaming service to lock this into?

Seems like this should be an add on. Sports programming only avaialbe one day a week and all subscribers have to subsidize the sports fans?

I wonder would Apple willing to allow an added US$9.95 per month separate subscription for NFL Sunday Ticket.

I haven’t tried it but apparently the NFL has jumped on the bandwagon with an NFL+ app. Not sure what the subscription cost is, but Apple is taking 30% of it so in a way they are already doing this.

Did you read the article? This was a quote from a source (Sportico) familiar with the negotiations. Has nothing to do with “tech covering sports.”

I call this guy out on his erroneous take and he goes and downvotes me in a bunch of my recent, unrelated posts. Not gonna lie, I literally laughed out loud at that.

Thanks for the laugh and the free rent in your head. That level of insecurity is something else.

Apple has yet to solidify a deal for the NFL Sunday Ticket package and talks could expand into 2023, according to a new report from Sportico (via The Verge).

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said on Wednesday that the negotiations for Sunday Ticket have reached a "very critical point," with Apple the apparent frontrunner for the rights. The NFL had originally planned to establish a deal in the fall, but the end of the year is approaching and no final terms have been decided as of yet. Goodell said that there is no timeline, and the NFL's decisions are "based on getting the best outcome with the best party."

Sportico says that pricing on Sunday Ticket is a sticking point. Apple wants to include Sunday Ticket access in the $6.99 cost of an Apple TV+ subscription, with no additional charges, but the NFL is not happy with such a low price point as it needs to "protect the interests" of CBS and Fox, its Sunday afternoon broadcast partners. Together, the two networks will pay the NFL $40 billion for the 2023 season.

Disney and Amazon are also both interested in Sunday Ticket, so there are other options for the NFL. Rumors have suggested for months that Apple is the "likely winner" of the NFL Sunday Ticket package, but there were signs of negotiation issues earlier this year when CNBC reported that Apple wanted more contractual flexibility than the NFL was interested in providing.

Apple has been ramping up its sports offerings in recent months in an effort to draw more subscribers to Apple TV+. The company partnered with the MLB for "Friday Night Baseball," and it has inked a 10-year deal with Major League Soccer that is set to kick off next year.

Apple has cut off negotiations with the NFL and will not be offering the NFL Sunday Ticket. It’s now down to Amazon Prime and Google (YoutubeTV)
