WOW! THAT'S A LOW PRICE!

Just got off the phone with an Apple rep. She said that "our company" isn't giving out anything free. She said that those are rumors but Apple is aware of the issue.

She also said that Apple will be releasing information regarding the matter/issue today. She said to keep checking their site.

There were posts stating that information was to be released by Apple yesterday. And others keep posting that they are receiving free bumpers. Hmm, who to believe?

great so they will write a script that stops the bars dropping on the screen while not changing anything?

This is what I'm fearful of as well. We'll see though, it will be very easy to test. Just use the speed test app to confirm if they are faking it. I would have to believe that they know people will check this and that will only hurt their credibility even more if they try and dupe us. I can't imagine they are that stupid, but who knows considering where we stand now. I'll try the software fix and determine from there if i will be returning my phone.

Might be a better idea to buy one in month or so.....:(

I'm just going to return the one I already had shipped to the Apple store and use the free one. I may be out the $4 shipping but might argue for some iTunes credit or something. Worst case I craigs list the bumper for $25.

You can sell it on ebay. it is selling 40+ on ebay now. I cannot believe it...but it is true.

Just spoke to a supervisor in Applecare, and she said she would gladly send me two free bumpers for my two iP4's, but they don't ship overseas (she is in the US, and I am in the UK)

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.. GIVE ME SOME SILLYBANDZ in the shape of a iPhone 4/iPone dock/Apple/iMac/MacBook Pro.... pleaseeeee:D

I telephoned my "local" Apple store (UK) and talked to the manager about the problem, and after 20 minutes of putting my case across to him he point blank refused (numerous times) to offer me a free bumper to resolve the issue.

He didn't even admit that there was an issue as nothing has been officially released from Apple about it, he said he'd just heard rumours.

He kept hiding behind the "no official statement", and "not company policy" lines, and the only option he offered me was to return the phone for a full refund of £599. That was it. End of story.

Very poor show by Apple, knowing that there is a resolution to the problem yet refusing to do anything about it because it would cost them money.

You actually paid 599 for an iPhone!? It's nice, but not worth that amount of money. And what is he supposed to do...he himself confirm that there is a hardware or software issue? What do you expect him to say geez?

That's the official price. Don't tell me it's too high, tell Steve Jobs!!!

I got a free bumper yesterday but shortly after they sent out a corp email to stop giving them out and sell them instead

I'm going to have to call BS short of any real proof. These stories vary too much for anyone to believe one over the other.

Huh, today I was told it was a bad batch of phones without a coating (which I'm not sure I believe), and that I can get a new phone. How can they fix that with a software patch?!

this is correct!!
i dont know if it was just a batch or all of the iphones but coating the antennas would solve the problem. AM and FM aerials use copper wire which is winded around normally ferit core which i think is compressed copper dust. The copper wire is coated to stop it shorting. the wire can then be induced by the a radio wave.

That's what they did for the G and GS. Why not also do it for this one :p .

yep. and when we got the software fix i told everyone to look at field test mode and you will notice, the -db range did not change, but the representation of bars will be improved.

i have never had a signal problem myself, but a software fix will quiet a number of people...for a while.

It doesn't seem like Jobs was aware of the death grip issue at the time he wrote that before the big launch and was probably referring to the general issue that cell phones have with signal degradation. We'll see though. I'm sick of the same two or three related jokes coming up 200x-300x a day like they were the first ones to say it. Come up with something new at least.

trust me, jobs knew:p

I just got off the phone with Apple. Apple rep told me...

Just hold it in your right hand. Holding it in your left hand causes issue with the antenna. I asked if I put a case on it won't it cover the antenna as well? Will this improve signal. She said probably make it worse. WTF? So they did not offer to send me out anything for free. Told me to reset my network connections and call back if that didn't work. Wow great advice.. Also No ETA on Fix. She said she was not aware of any.

thread make me sad, i have a bad phone and i cant get free bumper from apple, 3 calls, nada, lame. how is this some get them some don't thing.

I'm on the phone with the next level up person and they say nobody is even working this weekend that can authorize free bumpers, WTH this is shenanigans!

The key to getting a free bumper!

Hey All -

In my experience this morning, the key to getting a free bumper for your phone is speaking to a supervisor. The regular call agents don't have the authority to give away anything for free and most are just reading from a script.

When the first agent said that I would have to buy two bumpers to resolve the issues with my wife and I's iPhone4's, I was very polite but I said I think it's poor customer service to have to spend an extra $70 when I just dropped nearly $1400 on phones that don't even work properly.

After that, I asked to speak to his supervisor and basically said the same thing to him. At that time, he checked his stock and said that two bumpers would be on the way to my house for free. They should arrive here by Tuesday.

Just thought I would share my experience because I really believe Apple owes everyone free bumpers for this fiasco. It doesn't cost them anything and it's just poor customer service for them to make you buy an expensive accessory to make the phone work as it should.

Hope this helps...

I as well decided to call Apple Support. Here are the salient points:

1) They are officially prohibited from sending out free bumpers
2) They are instructed to tell us to reset network settings. (pretty lame suggestion if you ask me)
3) They "are working on it" is the company line and should have a firmware update in the coming days.
4) The reps know nothing more than the above.

There has been a lot of speculation from real change, (i.e. re-routing of frequencies in the baseband) to being duped by manipulation of the display of the signal bars. There is NO chance Apple is foolish enough to try the latter. Whether the former is an actual solution remains to be seen. We are also seeing reports that it is an uncoated metals problem. If that is the issue, then Apple has a potential recall on their hands. Will be interesting to see what happens over the next week or two. In the meantime, I personally can do the "Deathgrip" at home and get it to NO SERVICE, but in practical use, I never actually drop a call or see any disruption of service. So, personally, for me, it is a bit of "Much ado about nothing".

I also called Apple yesterday, and talked to the first rep.

"Did you restore your phone as a new phone?" Yup
"Do you hold it in your left or right hand?" Both
"Do you have a case for the phone?" No

I was then transfered to a second level rep, who asked me twice to "Please bare with us while we get this issue resolved." I told them that I was paying for a service and that I shouldn't have to if I have a faulty product. I then mentioned a "friend" was told a bumper was a temporary fix, and Apple had sent him one.

"Well, if they sent your friend a bumper, I can go ahead and have one sent to you. It has to be black, is that ok?" Black is the color I wanted anyways. :D

Got an order number and case number.

Got rejected by an apple supervisor. The guy was a complete ass to be honest.

Anyone who got a free bumper kind enough to PM me their case number?

I have to believe that it was possibly just a 'bad batch' as mine and others I know have no issues at all. I tried replicating the issue and couldn't. Either way, I hope Apple figures out a quick and fair fix for those who are affected.

jherb, try this for me if you would. Stand you Ip4 on its side (volume buttons up). Now rest a nickle across the seam. Do the bars drop off? This will tell me if your phone has some sort of insulation my phone doesn't have.

Thanks, Andy

I actually am getting sent a bumper ( I'm in the UK and I think the guy who I spoke to was American..)
However I wasn't given an order number..
He offered me whichever colour I liked..
