I got a free bumper, the best thing to say is that you are left handed and its impossible for you to not hold the iphone without touching the left antenna and how its rediculous to hold the phone in your right hand just for this when you've been a lefty all your life.. I told him it was like a righty trying to hold a fork spoon and other utensils in his left hand.

What number do you call and what do you say to the automated system to get to the best rep for this? Thanks!

You guys try a battery discharge and recharge along with a clean restore on your iPhone (No backup)???

I did those yesterday and now my phone doesn't lose service at all. I had a case on it for a while and I took it off today to test it again (i had to get the case cause im left handed).. and I can't get them to drop anymore

Uhhhh ... there is no fix sir ;) I do not know what you are talking about because I need a free bumper to fix this.

For what its worth, here is my experience that I just had calling AppleCare at ~12:00 EST today, the 26th. I was first told to try restoring the phone as a new phone which I told the representative I had attempted yesterday in addition to resetting the network settings. He then told me that my best option would simply be to get a replacement phone and that he needed to speak to his supervisor quickly. I went on hold for a bit and he came back and said that I could drop my phone off at any UPS store and once they received it I would be shipped a new one. Going without a phone for a few days isn't really an option for me because of work, so he told me to take it to an Apple store and see if I could get a replacement there. Pretty par for the course, although I didn't know they were still replacing phones at this point.

However, this is the part that I find interesting. After all this, I mentioned that some people had been receiving free bumpers as a temporary fix for the issue while software engineers worked on a rumored update that is coming soon. He then told me that his information told him it was strictly a hardware problem and that he wasn't aware of any pending software changes to rectify the issue.

Just add another Apple statement to the already confusing mess that is their response to this issue. =P

Wanted to try the free bumper, I called and got a guy, told him my problem and put me on hold, came back and said, the two black seams r actually the antennas and I needed a bumper which he would send me, he then put me on with someone else and send he would call me next week when they r sure the bumper will fix the issue, and said he would send it to me if it did fix the issue, so not getting one yet bt maybe next week, they also said nothing about tla software fix

I just had a similar experience... I called hoping to secure the free bumper, but instead was told to do a hard reset/restore and if that failed get in contact with ATT due to a network issue in my area :D. After some more pressing he changed the story to a defective phone that needed to be swapped out at an apple store. He explained that since the Apple stores had no iPhone 4's in stock I would be given a 3GS replacement until new iPhone 4 stock became available....

Too many different stories apple

called 3x. all supervisors are aware of the free bumper and was told not to give it away as it was not confirmed that it'll fix the problem. sucks.

Is everyone who did get a bumper doing it through Applecare? I didn't buy it yet thinking I might use home owner's insurance.

they are aware of the problem, but cannot send out bumpers free of charge. an official resolution/announcment should be out next week.
i didn't even ask for a bumper, but was told if they could they would. so no bumper for me.

jherb, try this for me if you would. Stand you Ip4 on its side (volume buttons up). Now rest a nickle across the seam. Do the bars drop off? This will tell me if your phone has some sort of insulation my phone doesn't have.

Thanks, Andy

i used a dime, it kills the signal even faster.

I just talked to a supervisor and he told me that the engineers are working their butts off to fix it. He said he's not sure what is going to happen whether it be a recall or software fix. He then told me that there is a temporary fix which is a bumper and offered to send me out one for free. :) He was cool and pretty nice!

I'm having the signal issues and I talked to applecare and they said they would mail me 4 different cases! Black, white, blue, and a silver case! :)

See how I did that?

Nobody is getting any free cases. Try calling apple care (I have, 3 times to be exact). The official policy is to wait it out because it could easily just be a software issue. They are NOT sending anybody any free cases. That is the company line. Even if you explain how you own several apple products, have been a loyal customer, if you complain about how ridiculous it is, out of principle, to have to buy a 30 dollar case to make $700 investment functional and how a multi-billion dollar company would not mail a case just out for the sake of good old fashioned customer service.

I tried it all and have come to the conclusion that NO ONE is getting any free cases by calling Apple.

If there is anyone on this forum who claims they got a case, then please post your case# so we all can reference it when we try and call for a case to counter "official policy."

Ya, thought so.

I'm just going to return the one I already had shipped to the Apple store and use the free one. I may be out the $4 shipping but might argue for some iTunes credit or something. Worst case I craigs list the bumper for $25.

Good luck selling something on CL for 12% off when everyone will be getting it for free.

I've got a free bumper on the way so I'm told. No colour was mentioned so I guess it will be black.

I was not given a case number but the supervisor did offer me a free bumper. He was extremely understanding and friendly. You are right, the company line is to have patience and hold out for a little while. I was told that they do not give bumpers out to everybody but due to me having been a loyal customer for so many years, they would send one to me. I was asked for my email address, the supervisor then sent me his contact info for me to keep in case there are any other issues and he asked that I email him back my mailing address.

All-in-all, a good experience. I had not yet read tihs thread before calling but was a bit upset that I was told I needed to purchase an additional piece of hardware to make my iphone act as a phone. I was persistent and the supervisor offered a bumper to show that Apple is at least trying. He even offered me a choice of colors.

I'm now a happy customer.

I just did this.. getting 6 of them sent to me, my color choices.

AWESOME!

Thanks for the heads up!

I was afraid of this. Going to try and mask a design flaw with a software blanket. Something will take a hit. My prediction is Bluetooth signal degradation.:apple:

I'm a strong believer that it is a software issue now. The problem does nit manifest if your signal is better than -80dB. There's a very obvious change with a poor signal of up to 20dB but no change at all in better conditions. No matter how I grip.

I'm a newbie and would like to PM you about this but don't know how on this website?

i got rejected..the guy flat out told me to hold it differently..he said apple didnt make any official cases..what an uninformed rep

I phoned apple care, told them I had the antenna issue. He said he has to transfer me to his supervisor if it's about that.

When the supervisor answered he asked me in detail how it happens. He got me to do it while I was on the phone with him. He said the reason for this is that he has to forward all the details to the engineering department.

He then said that even though it's a hardware issue, the engineering department are working on a software fix for next week.

He said in the mean time he will send me a free bumper. However, he then said I might get the software fix before I receive the bumper, Monday prehaps?

Apple are on top of this, even though jobs thinks its not an issue- it's clearly become one.

So they admit that it is a hardware problem? If the software fix does not amount to a complete fix, they need to replace all of the affected phones. I for one am not putting up with half of a fix. I will wait and see, unless ATT waives my restocking fee.
