seems to me apple is considering the developers will use these minis to make a profit depending how well their app or concept sells or not. Which is a risk renting these minis.
If i created an app and sold 6, i would be mad at myself and rent an apple tv movie next year.
if that sold 600, i would rent a mini next year.
to be fair, steve jobs was not around when apps made profits like today.

You want to try that statement again?

Straight from the agreement:
Section 4. Term and Termination; Return of the Developer Transition Kit
"The Universal App Quick Start Program will commence on the date You accept this Addendum and will automatically expire and terminate without notice from Apple one (1) year from the date You accept the Addendum"

"You agree to promptly return the Developer Transition Kit to the Apple address designated by Apple no later than thirty (30) days after the end of the Term,"

I accepted the agreement on June 25. I have until July to return it. Today's email changes nothing about these terms so far and it's purely optional to return it by May for the $200 voucher.
You literally cut the words right before it proved you wrong, come on. “, unless terminated earlier in accordance with this Section 4 or otherwise agreed by Apple”

Now, Apple wants it back. And owners are getting less than half of what they spent on it back as a credit to be used in three months on machines that are nearly 4x as expensive as the credit.
Who would they get anything back? They rented it. They don't own Apple's hardware.

Developers should understand that.

How is this confirmation of new Macs in June?
Because the credit is specifically towards an M1 Mac and only till May 31st, knowing Apple I think this means non-m1 (m2, m1x) systems will be introduced in June’s WWDC, if the credit would be perpetual or run through say the end of the lease as a developer you would want it used against the newer systems.

By putting May 31st as a deadline they avoid this situation.

no, that doesn't prove me wrong.

no where in the letter does it say it's terminating the program earlier than what was agreed upon.

in fact it says "Until your program membership expires one year after your membership start date..." in the email. nothing has changed in the agreement.

i enrolled on June 25. i still have until July to deliver it back to Apple.

shouldn't they at least get a partial refund for the period of time remaining on the 12 month agreement?

IF you pay $500, and the lease is only 8 months instead of twelve, they should get a third of that back on original payment method (imo)

I don't think they have to return it yet, it seems like the original agreement was a year. But if you want the $200, you do need to hop on it soon-ish to redeem your $200 coupon by end of May. Seems like it's your choice.

But it seems like a no-brainer if you were going to buy one when your 12 months ran out (why wouldn't you want the production model, which I'm guessing is faster/better?). I guess if you waited, you might have an option for some other models (but at full price).

If they were forcing it or terminating the original deal, it seems like that would be pointed out. Instead, the headline says "asks".

Complaining about the coupon not being more. It is childish behavior, in my opinion. Mature adults should not act like that, especially when Apple never said there would be a coupon to begin with.

Sadly, everybody needs a good whine in order to feel good.

Show me in the agreement where Apple promised a free machine after returning it? NO WHERE.

Getting the DTK is purely opt-in. It has always been the fact that these DTKs were to be returned after a year. Nothing has changed. You can keep the DTK for longer than may if you want to return it on the originally agreed upon date.

Nothing in the agreement changed.

I stand by my point. Developers are too self-entitled.

This is coming from me, a developer, that paid for the DTK as well.
Damn, I don’t get the insane amount of downvotes you got just by stating that everything is actually going on as agreed upon with an extra cherry added on top as a small gesture.

It really ticks me off to see developers whining about not getting a bigger discount. Apple never promised one to begin with. They should say thank you for the kind gesture and move on with their life, instead of acting like impudent children.

The program was supposed to last one year. Some developers didn't obtain a DTK until late September, so that's less than 5 months with the DTK for $500 - A rip off no regardless of the discount.

No but Jobs is the only reason Apple are around to make profits like they do today.

Really, Steve Troughton-Smith? Apple never promised you a thing, but you're complaining about a measly $200?

Really self entitled there.

I bet he saw that Apple gave developers a full iMac after returning the Intel transition kit and he was hoping to get a Mac mini after returning this DTK so that's why he got one. 🤦‍♂️

EDIT: Yup. That's exactly what he was banking on
These are his apps. Try and tell me it's not in Apple's best interest to keep him happy.

Really? THEY are self-entitled? Let’s look at the situation here.

Apple charged $500 for the DTK. Developers bought it to build and transition software for APPLE’S platform so that when the new devices came out, there was a strong catalog.

Now, Apple wants it back. And owners are getting less than half of what they spent on it back as a credit to be used in three months on machines that are nearly 4x as expensive as the credit.

Apple posted a record-breaking quarter this week. And yet this is how they treat their developers?
The original agreement had it as a rental with _nothing_ communicated about a credit or trade-in for production hardware.

This $200 is a gift, but people were hoping for a lot more. If people don't want it - they can always return the machine like they are contractually obligated to and toss the coupon in the trash.

Its just so Tim Cooks Apple. Just hilariously stingy for no reason whatsoever. They could replace the DTK with the entry-level M1 Mac mini it would cost them next to nothing in relative terms.

They would rather burn the developer goodwill. Pathetic.

I'm familiar with his apps. They're nothing special.

If you've read his tweets, you can see the ridiculous ideas he comes up with. Virtual machines on iPads? Really? No one needs virtual machine support on iPads.

It's in Apple's interest to not particularly listen to this dev.

They still have until September (actually 30 days after the program ends, so October) to return the Mac. Nothing in the email changes this requirement.

Agreement says the start date is when the user signed the agreement and it ends 1 year after that.

Most developers don't make much money yet but paid $500 + $100 for the M1. $200 credit allows you to use only on the 3 M1 models currently on the market. If we want to buy newer model around May, we lose the $200 credit additionally. It seems Apple is really preventing developer who wants to take advantage out of Apple. Apple should come out and explain the intention. If Apple thinks that developers intentionally want to take advantage of replacing a new machine, just say it. We will understand.

At least the $200 credit should be used to purchase any Apple silicon models. I wonder why Apple make such restriction.

I was being sassy.

Come on, he has a Lotto Machine for iOS, iPadOS, and Mac!
