Apple's taking steps. "If we can't do it one way, we'll try another way, since {we} really want some self driving platform"

If Apples self driving car is anything like apple maps then no thanks, I choose life.

You must not have used it in the past few years. I use it regularly all over the country and have zero problems. I still regularly use it and Google Maps at the same time to see how they compete and Apple Maps is as accurate as Google's. Google Maps has an edge in searching though and lane assist. I'm not alone, Apple Maps is now used several billion times a week, yes that's BILLIONS and is used much more often than Google Maps on iOS, even though Google Maps only takes a couple of minutes to download. The huge advantage Apple Maps has is that you don't surrender your privacy to use it. Google Maps keeps track of everywhere you go and links it to your master ID, so it's part of the dossier they have on most people that is available to hackers, law enforcement, intel agencies, oppressive governments, etc.

So much FUD.

Let me give you an actual experience of driving in the country over Easter, in the U.K.

I took my iPhone 6S and note 4 with me, and was off to Yorkshire dales, never been there before . Had a pleasant surprise that I did not have to use the note 4 as a sat nav as the hire car had CarPlay/android .

First HUGE difference, before leaving I downloaded my maps offline on the Note 4 . Cannot do that with apple maps.

Driving up, I was in the passenger side so used both side my side as a test. Both do a great job on the main roads.

And the HUGE difference we hit the Yorkshire dales, and guess what, the Three reception - GONE ..... my apple maps went dead....blank. Google maps with its offline mode, saved the day.

Second. We turned up to an information centre and the manager was telling a group of people they were completely in the wrong location, and said they got it all the time with iPhone users. Yup another classic example of apple maps having it locations wrong! Still a major issue .

Simple fact is, once you leave the major cities, apple maps is still piss poor. Most people who sing apple map praises stick to major roads, and it's all but the same to google.

Master ID - please.... pleases explain this FUD! What a load of rubbish....people really have no idea how google analytics or tracking works.... so they create conspiracy theories. Did you know that every single request you make to Siri, including apple maps, apple stores!! And did you know that with both apple and google, of all the information they capture on you, none of it is linked to a master iD that links to you. Google cookies as a start mate, and stop spreading this FUD and google maps v Apple maps.

Dossier...... wow. Turn off cookies brah, and shock horror, google will stop following you around the net with its ads....yup...there is no ID in your browser brah, that is unique to use...it's the same damn cookie set though. Apple actually stores so so much more on you, cause all thier products are linked so closely . You should be ***** scared if "agencies" get access to apple's back end systems....cause here all you info IS linked to your Apple ID.

Do you also should when apple "recommends" music, software or accessories within its own ecosystem cause they are data mining?? Nope, you see that as a feature, same behaviour you accuse google of .

Can someone tell me who they are creating this software for? All the major automakers already investing billions in this space. They don't need Apple. Plus has Apple ever been successful being a piece of technology in somebody else's product? Unless their goal is their own vehicles for some self driving ridesharing service I see big fail all over this.
CarPlay is fairly universal these days - most new cars have this as an option. Love it in mine.

Apple's work in the car industry has been something of an open secret for the past three years. The company was originally planning to create its own autonomous vehicle, but pivoted to an autonomous driving software platform following internal strife and leadership issues.
Rumor, not fact. No sources on record.

Where Apple maps is better than google it's much better. Where I need accurate maps anywhere, I'll take my Nuvi and not rely on my cell phone.

As far as which company is willing to shovel your personal info out the door, carry on.

Do tell . Where is it much better?

Seriously there is so much uneducated FUD on these forums about personal info google captures. You sure you want to head down this discussion ? I spent seven years working with legal and data protection at the BBC around what google captures, while I'm not a huge fan of google, do dell me what Personal Info they capture and shovel out the door we missed?

The only thing I can think of is that, in fact, is intended for the automakers. One idea could be to that they desire to sell packaged software and small hardware integration elements, a little like their Carplay integrates with auto information clusters. I doubt apple wants to fully invest themselves in reinventing the auto, they might be more interested in providing the brain for the body, so to speak.

Apple maps is better in NYC, LA, SF, Houston, etc.

As far as shoveling info out the door you're the one with the unfounded comment about apples servers. And seemingly to some posters point here, what a company says they do in the T&C is not necessarily what they do. Although I have no "tin foil hat" on the top of my head.

Are you forgetting about this massively successful product?

…okay, maybe you have a point.

iTunes on Windows - successfully allowing literally 1 billion iOS devices to be compatible with OS X and Windows PCs. That's a BIG DEAL.

Better in what way?

Right.... how about you read the comment I responded to.....cause mine is the silly one on this thread .....or feel free to move the goal posts, I'd suggest dropping the personal info discussion .

So back to apple maps, how is it better than google maps in NYC? I genuinely like to know the answer

It's better for me, IMO. I can't speak for anyone else (except my wife, kids and dog) nor am I going to get into the details, because that is just another rabbit hole. As I said previously, my Nuvi is better than both, especially without a cell signal. All I'll say is that I prefer apple maps display of directions and the way it provides POI information. It may not have the same expansive overall breadth of googles database, but it works perfectly for my needs in and around various big cities. (oh, and the voice isn't as grating as googles)

I am fully aware of the genealogy of the comment regarding personal info.

It's always interesting to see the self driving car opinions. I'm sure the horseless carriage was preposterous too. "I'll never get rid of my horse", said everyone. Now horsekeeping is effectively a hobby.

It's coming folks. Maybe not as fast as projected. But I think they'll be here in our lifetime. And, some food for thought, we already rely on computers for traffic regulation. The idea that computers would increase rather than decrease risk of death is... amusing.

Agree to disagree, but LA is a long shot from being better in my experience. I can't speak for the other locations, but I grew up just outside of Los Angeles and we visit 2-3 times a year. Apple maps just isn't great there. I've had good experiences around Boston though.

I used to live out there and get out there frequently. I guess everybody's experience will be different. As the saying goes YMMV.:)

Fair enough. Of course it comes down to personal interest. The conclusion I have come to is that a GPS that is dependent on data at all times is flawed. The data should live on the device and only the GPS required. I was going to buy a dedicated GPS to replace my TomTom, though have instead decided to keep my note 4 for Navigation duties, in my case, I can download offline maps anywhere around the world, that are up to date and I don't have to pay tomtom for updates or new maps. From an economical point of view, my note 4 is a much better product for my purposes, even works with all the new build car entertainment units that support android / CarPlay.

Around town I generally use apple maps, as it's upto date in London. If I go into the country, I still don't trust apple maps though. Great for big cities, questionable in rural areas off the beaten track.

The only thing I can add is that I believe Garmin provides lifetime map updates for free (the cell phone gps navigation industry is to blame). But everybody has to be comfortable with their choices.

I don't know why people keep talking about "Google" and "Self-driving cars".

It's a clear failure for Alphabet, they started early, didn't accomplish anything, now they have dozens of competing projects that all seem going well (from Mercedes, to nVidia, passing through Delphi, Bosch, Apple, etc.)

Google has no chance, because they won't have any car to go with it. And those who have a car, have a self-driving supplier to go with it. There's FIAT-Chrysler, but it's a small group.

Once anyone engaged in a debate uses "brah" I'm out.

Even though Project Titan as a hardware product seems to have been called or at least dramatically scaled back for "wait and see", I'd still want to see it. Car makers can't do good software design for dashboards, and physical design throughout is often pretty arbitrary, I'd have liked to see if Apple could drag the industry forward there, even if they never became a large seller.

Apple has developed a training program to instruct employees on how to handle cars being used to test its autonomous driving software platform, according to documents obtained by Business Insider.

The company's "Development Platform Specific Training" document references an "Apple Automated System" and a "Development platform," alluding to the self-driving software platform Apple is rumored to be building after plans for a full autonomous electric vehicle fell through.

Apple recently obtained a permit from the California DMV that will allow it to test self-driving vehicles on public roads, and as part of that process, the company appears to be training employees to use whatever system it's testing. According to the DMV, Apple plans to use three 2015 Lexus RX450h SUVs, which will be driven by six drivers with expertise in areas like machine learning.

Based on the documents, drivers are required to pass seven tests as part of their training before being allowed to work with Apple's software platform. Each driver must complete two practice runs and three trials to pass tests, which cover topics like taking control of the vehicle at tight U-turns, sudden acceleration, sudden braking, and more.

Apple's work in the car industry has been something of an open secret for the past three years. The company was originally planning to create its own autonomous vehicle, but pivoted to an autonomous driving software platform following internal strife and leadership issues.

Apple is now said to be creating a driving system under the leadership of Bob Mansfield, with the car team having been given until the end of this year to prove the feasibility of a self-driving car platform. Such a system could potentially allow Apple to partner with car manufacturers as a sort of expansion of CarPlay.

With Apple ready to test the software on public roads, it appears development is fairly far along. Should the company take vehicles out on California streets, its work will need to be publicly shared with the DMV based on California law.

[doublepost=1492985171][/doublepost]why is apple wasting its time with autonomous car? how many billion are wasted on this that could be invested in iphone, ipad, mac, or an amazon echo competitor?

I don't know how old you are, and maybe it's just a coincidence, but some young(ish) people at work have mentioned this magical universal basic income to me on occasion but have been spectacularly unable to explain exactly how it works. Perhaps you can. Who is supposed to generate the wealth needed to distribute for free? Why exactly would these people or entities give away money for absolutely nothing in return, and keep doing so generation after generation? What exactly would these jobless people do day-in, day-out? I have a million more such questions but let's start with these simple ones for now.

The idea tends to be repeated due to concerns with displacement of human labor. People need money to purchase or rent housing, buy food, clothing, etc, which we effectively mandate (even clothing is essentially mandated). If that model of society breaks down, you no longer have a functional society. This could result in any number of things, but it certainly doesn't work to assume that people will disappear if they can't find work.

Their suggestions are basically one abstract model that has come up. Since it's not a real consideration for any government that I know of today, they wouldn't have implementation details available. I see it more as recognition of a potential future problem that we will most likely have to address in some manner, probably within my own lifetime.

Keep in mind that their suggestions might sound dysfunctional, but they are most likely concerned that what we have today will stop working.

Fukushima was guaranteed 100% safe...until it wasn't. No matter what we halfway-evolved humans try and build to be 100% safe, we will NEVER attain that goal. We are a flawed species and our products reflect that. So no thanks!!! I want the wheel and brake UNDER MY CONTROL when my self driving car (or an adjacent vehicle), has it's Fukushima event (via Service Pack 13?). However, I do think development of sensors to assist human drivers is worth pursuing.

Nobody mentioned mapping in UK, so you are off topic. In America, it works as described mate.

Moreover, as far as Master ID, try reading your terms of service with Google and get informed. Google tells you that they link all of your data across all of the services under a single identifier, that way where you drive, what you search for, your browsing, every email you send or receive via Gmail is scanned and retained, every document you upload, every photo you upload, etc. Google makes over 90% of all of its revenue from selling you to advertisers. It hasn't a thing to do with cookies as you seem to think. You don't use cookies when you use Google Maps, you don't use cookies when someone sends you an email, you don't use cookies when you upload a document to Google docs, when you use their messaging or chats, etc., etc.

You didn't really think those services were "free" did you? LOL. Again, take the time to read your terms of service to keep from embarrassing yourself and misinforming others. If you are comfortable with their being a massive dossier on you by Google that is accessible to hackers, the government, law enforcement, intel services, and of course advertisers, by all means keep using their services. Many of the rest of us aren't, and thank heavens Apple cares about privacy. As one of the leading Intel officials quipped, if Google didn't exist, we would have had to invent it.
