Exactly ;) It probably also doesn't support state of the art 3D - remember when TV makers tried to get us all to buy new TVs and sit on our couch watching with sunglasses on? HA!

on 3D - agreed. BUT on 4k there is a difference.

If you're old enough, you saw the EXACT same "it doesn't matter" argument being made when people were comparing 720 dpi to 1080 dpi TVs.

Apple also knows 4K matters.

I have no doubt there's been a calculation made on when the should put out a 4K apple TV device to maximize profit. That date is not that same as when it best benefits the apple customer. Guest which date they pick... $

I wonder how many seconds it will until third party condom cases become available for the Apple WiiMote. Apple seems to have the strap covered so that they can blame you when you don't spend an extra $13 to prevent yourself from flinging the remote at your tv.

Also, how secure can a strap be that is attached via the lightning connector port?

On the other hand (pun?), can said lightning connector wrist strap also be used to carry around your iPhone / iPad / Pencil / Magic Trackpad / Magic Mouse 2?

That's a joke, right? Please tell me that "securing" a remote via Lightning Connector is a ridiculous joke!

Oh, my! **** me hard!

It's NOT a joke! WTF!!!

In for 1. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about my zone2, but I suppose I'll use an HDMI splitter + toslink-to-analog converter. Sigh, two more plugs gone.

Yes I am totally aware of that.
But Apple is so rich they can afford to swallow some of that currency fluctuation.
Did our wages increase? No. So have Apple products gotten more expensive for Canadians? Yes.
lol, Apple owe us (yes, I'm Canadian) nothing. We all have a choice, to spend or not to spend. They don't govern us. So if you are this hard hit by our dollar, and that you are priced out by 30-40 dollars, maybe this is not the product for you.

At this time they haven't done so and I don't see it happening at this point. At this point you're going to have to live with 200MB apps.

That's incorrect. The app size initial download is limited to 200mb, but the app can download the rest of its stuff. If your app has more than 200MB of actual code that would be odd, especially for a TV app.

It depends on the size of the tv, it always did. If you're watching on a 32" tv the difference between 720 and 1080 might not be noticable. But a 32" tv and a 50" it is.

4K is the same, there are 55" 1080 tv's that show better than some 4K tv's of the same size and bigger. However you see the resolution difference on even larger screens but it does not always mean it will give you a better picture though.

I'm concerned that, in order to sell revised hardware, this may be another Apple device that will have artificial software limitations imposed where the hardware otherwise supports new features.

I can see it coming with the lack of 4K. I don't plan to have a 4K TV for years and will update the ATV at that time. However, I am concerned that the current box will be phased out prematurely even for 1080 sets.

just my opinion, but I wouldn't get apple care on an apple tv.
no spinning harddrive to wear out, no delicate screen to crack, it's not a device that you normally take with you - so won't get wet, or pounded in bottom of a backpack...
what if you break the controller?

What model of Yamaha Receiver and what model of Television do you have?
My TV is an Insignia. As for my receiver, I'd have to check when I get home later.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I do believe there are HDMI adapters that can extract the audio from the HDMI and convert it to an Optical Out.
I wasn't aware of such a device, but another person had mentioned one does exist. I'll have to look into it.

There in lies my problem. My receiver doesn't have HDMI inputs/outputs. All my video connections are from the device(s) to the TV. My audio connections are from the device(s) to the receiver. I thought by going optical from TV to Receiver and HDMI from Apple TV to TV would solve the issue - but I can't get audio. Tried many different settings.

Hate to say it (because I too would have liked an optical out to run direct to my whole house audio), but maybe it's time to look for a newer receiver that has hdmi jacks... audioholics.com does some decent, seemingly unbiased reviews on receivers and such...

In addition to a getting hdmi input outputs, you'll also get the newest in video and surround sound technologies, etc...

I think could get a devise (a splitter of sorts) that plugs into the apple tv's hdmi out and provides your needed digital output - but then you're starting to invest in dongles and cheap items that could start degrading your signal path...

I purchased a 3rd gen a few weeks ago even knowing this was out because I prefer it as a product.

Honestly, I'm not sure I believe you.

You seriously care that much about how it looks in your TV device stack versus how it actually works and the new features? (Including all of the updates Apple will make in the coming years to the OS?)

You seriously care more the looks of something that is basically invisible in a home—it's not a watch, classic car, or fashion piece—over all of the killer apps and games coming in the app store?

If you really hate the design that much, you couldn't just hide the tiny device behind your cable box—which is uglier—or the modem router—which is also uglier—or gaming console or a book or a flower pot, and enjoy modern capabilities? Including when they add cord-cutting features?

Nah, I don't believe you. It's nice fodder to fan some flames on the message boards, but I'm calling shenanigans.

very true - there are no reviews yet, it is pretty much unknown which apps are available now (and later), most of us already have a streaming device and don't need this and the price point is less of an excuse as with the previous genration .... but yes, I had to order it too (true Apple Fanboy, sometimes in denial, but I proofed it by this action of order and that I checked next day shipment since I don't want for it any longer as required - only a true fanboy would check this)
Yeah, and I look at it with eyes that this will continue to improve and be updated for years and I'll likely use it for at least 3 years. That comes to about 15 cents a day (for the 32GB model). I also rationalize it by saying I prefer to spend money on tangible things that I can use for years rather than eating out, going to bars, and getting daily starbucks, which all combined could easily reach $150 within a week or two.

I wanted to jump right on this when I heard about apps and watched all the vids about it. It looks awesome, but I would love Amazon Prime on my ATV. I'll sit it out for a bit and see if they release that first. I already have two last gens (though one is dying on me) so I planned on replacing that. If it doesn't get Amazon Prime I may have to look at a device like the new Roku.

I thought it was worth a punt on a 32GB version to:

a) check if I can hijack a channel for use with PlexConnect
b) see what other apps can do, hopefully including a native Plex one

If it can do (a) and/or (b) then I'll use it instead of my aTV3. Otherwise, it can go back after 13 days!

This is what I wrote earlier.. if storage is for Apps only I do not see the need (for myself) of 64 gb.... if instead you can save movie in it, they should have upped to 128

The extra storage will be used for apps and caching apps extras, music, photos and videos.

And thank goodness they do. As someone that owns a large number of Apple shares, I'm thankful they follow good business practices!

Hate the new design. Can't believe they changed the form of it to not match the previous generation or the Airport express. Jobs wouldn't have let this product out. I purchased a 3rd gen a few weeks ago even knowing this was out because I prefer it as a product.
because of the form factor?

When can we expect other retailers (i.e. Staples) to begin selling it? I have a giftcard burning a hole and I would like to use it in this.

I have a Best Buy gift card I need to use up. Anyone know if they will be carrying it?

Yes, both of these retailers will be carrying the new Apple TV. As to when you're best bet is to visit the store and see if a supervisor can see it in the system yet, or just stayed glued to their website for more info.

As for B&H, they are expecting stock on Nov 10th, so I would expect that BestBuy and Staples will be receiving their shipment in and around that date too. Remember though, estimated in-stock dates are only estimates, and the actual dates do change from time to time.

for anyone not buying applecare which comes with replacement warranty - you will have a hand held remote that you will be flinging around wii-style when playing games.

Also, water damage is a real possibility with the remote. I think the warranty is a good add on.
