Anyone else think this move is strange?

I can't remember another time that Apple discontinued a device, then months later, start to sell it again as clearance.
Gauging interest in smaller phones again, without going through the whole process of coming up with a new small phone, maybe?

Desperate times... No, actually, it's still a great little phone. Now they need to take the XR design, shrink it down to around the SE size, and watch how many people buy it. I'm not a small phone person but I think there's a big enough market to justify an SE2. I actually think if they stuffed the A11 processor, upgraded camera, added an upgraded display to wide gamut, they could sell this thing fro $400-$450 all day.

Shoot at that price, I'm nearly tempted to pick up a 128GB.

YES!, they make a NEW iPhone in a 4" size and I'll run to buy it.

sold out? well well apple.. still a demand for small iphones.. size may matter.. but only for certain things!
exactly... 4" being neglected has hurt the sales .. make the 4" and watch the sales balance out

Sold out in 4 hours - - unadvertised?

Perhaps it was just a small batch of leftover stock, rather than the foreshadowing of the Apple-ocalypse that many in this thread (predictably) predicted.

STILL my favourite iPhone! Shame it's only in the USA.

Actually, it might be wider than just the USA, as I'm in the UK and scored a new iPhoneSE 128GB from a major online & high-street retailer, they charged me just £249 online, free delivery, which I consider a bargain. JL called it a "Special Purchase" whatever that means?

from J***L****.com/apple-iphone-se-ios-4-inch-4g-lte-sim-free-128gb/gold/p3915150

Apple iPhone SE, iOS, 4", 4G LTE, SIM Free, 128GB still £249, "never knowingly undersold"

or you could buy the snappier & shiny iphone-xs/6.5-inch-display-256gb- for exactly one grand more!

My idea, update iPhone SE with specs, camera, cpu .. ram etc and make front screen all side to side ... with finger print reader and this will sell like HOT CAKES!

Same size as it is now, but bezel free = perfect phone !

Make 4s size, bezel free, that would be peachy.

Let’s stop associating a small phone with budget specs.

How about they take the XS and shrink it down. A lot of people want a flagship phone with a smaller footprint.
There are many reasons why us iPhone SE fans love that phone. For some it was price. People who want flagship specs have a few options. For people who want a budget option (like the 9.7 2018 ipad), they don't have an option.

Those who want a small flagship didn't hold out for one but went ahead and bought the XS or XSMax. But for the budget-minded, they're not going to pay more than double.

I think I’m going to cancel my order. Someone brought up a good point. I have a 6S... why do I need SE.

I was doing it for the storage because my 6S is only 64gb. The small size was just a bonus. 6S is a pretty amazing device and the size is nearly perfect.

Wish I didn’t order a case and screen protector already

It was selling like a hot cakes
Even Apple admitted that they didn’t expect such a demand.
But, as usually, it was “too cheap” so they decided to make it “not popular” by not upgrading it for years.

Same as iPad mini same as Mac mini.

In Steve Jobs era, Mac mini was to get you into an Apple ecosystem.
Under Tim Cook era, Mac mini is for getting you out of Apple ecosystem, by pissing you off.

SE was released with 6s and still people want it, because of the design, size.

No it won't. If the SE was selling like hot cakes, Apple would've continued the lineup. They didn't.

Do I like the SE form factor? Heck yes. But majority of the market have spoken. Even budget Android phones are going large. We just have to accept that the X/XS size is going to be the "smallest" iPhone going forward.

I’m not associating the SE as budget. And Apple didn’t either. It came out in the same cycle as the 6S models with the same internals, but not quite all of the benefits of the 6S, like no 3D Touch, 1st gen Touch ID. The SE did have all the parts that matter, just like the XR. The XR in some ways feels like the SE of this cycle, but larger. That’s why I stated to shrink down XR and call that the SE. the XR shrunk down to a form factor smaller than the 6/7/8 would be a Goldilocks for millions of buyers.

I wrote to Apple about the SE. The important point is that for a lot of people a small phone is usually their first phone.
I'm thinking of kids. We gave our kids their first phone at 11 and it was either a hand-me-down (5S or earlier) that was small or recently, the SE. Given the choice between 6S and SE they chose the SE.
They don't want large phones, they are too big for small hands and they don't fit in their little pockets.
Without a small phone in the line up you are giving up a large chunk of the first phone market to the competition
And the first phone often means you've got a customer for life.
I think it's bad marketing to abandon this segment for the small cost it must be.

...but I think that Apple considers every SE sold in the US is a loss of a sale on a more expensive model.
I'm only one lowly consumer, but if the above is true, there is a flaw in Apple's thinking. I own three SE's only because the were "reasonably" priced. Had I not purchased an SE, I still would definitely NOT pay $1,000-$1,500 for a smartphone alternative, even if it could make my coffee and toast in the morning.

Not true. I went from a 5S, to a 6 (hated the size), and then when the SE came out, bought one of those on release day and never looked back. Now I'm on my 3rd one. If Apple completely abandons the small form factor, I will abandon them.

If they released a small form factor phone that is spec'd the same as their top tier phones, I will gladly line up on release day for that. $800-$1100 is what I'd gladly pay for the latest tech in the smallest package.

Oh, and please please please make the next SE waterproof.

I think its a BIG GIANT CLUE, when the iPhone SE and 2015 MacBook Pro do so well on the clearance/refurb site while Apple is posting declining sales. HINT HINT

I’m not surprised that they sold out quickly given that they were $249-$299. That’s just $50 more than an iPod Touch for the 32GB and the same price for the 128GB model.

Add portrait mode or camera upgrade to this form factor and haptic touch features and possibly waterproofing and you have a winner.

Oh wait that would basically be an even cheaper XR
[doublepost=1548089847][/doublepost]The fact that you can go from 32gb to 128gb’s for an extra $50 slightly triggers me.

I'd jump at an XR in the size of the SE, even at $749, honestly.

The price point isn't an issue to me, nor are any of the supposed technical shortcomings, but that size is just obscene for something I'm expected to carry around on a daily basis.

Put it on eBay and let us know. I bet you’ll get more than you paid for it.
