Strange move. I read most of above comments. You all have great points.
The only thing I really like to know is the meeting notes the preceded this sale.

Was it an open supply chain contract they wanted to get rid of?
Did they think they would calm investors?
What about 5G? All these devices will be outdated?

They are certainly not thinking about the market or their customers.
I still believe they need an $800 high-end phone.
Not some trade in program or some limited offer.

Having bought the X, I won’t be looking at these prices for at least two years.

My dream design:
4 inch
Best camera (same in Both, front al rear)
More battery (yeah, don’t care if looks more fat)

What I most feel SE is lacking is on cameras. I don’t even miss the nocht.

It's curious indeed. In fact I wonder if they're testing the waters to see if it still sells.

Apple needs to make inroads in India badly and I don't think it would be hard to update the processor and camera on the SE, keep the casing and stick to this price point.
Though it’s Apple’s least expensive phone, I think those who use their smartphone as their only computing device (especially) want a larger display.

The 6S/6S Plus, in addition to the SE, are already being manufactured by Apple (Wistron) in India. Foxconn is supposedly building a factory in Sriperumbudur to build newer phones like the XS/XS Max/XR.

Those went quick.
Aaaand they are gone. Bastards.
They are back! At least in Gold and Rose Gold. For some reason, I was able to order them from Safari on iPad, but not on Edge on a Windows PC. They show up as unavailable when I click the link in the article from my desktop, but as available (in store and for delivery) when I click on the link in Safari on my iPad.

None are available :( wonder if they will keep adding more
Try clicking on the link from a mobile device. For whatever reason, when I clicked from my desktop running Microsoft Edge, it showed up as not available in stores or online, but when I clicked on the link from my iPad, Gold and Rose Gold models showed as available in both capacities online and in stores (for pickup next Friday).

Update: I also saw them when clicking through Internet Explorer, so my Microsoft Edge must be displaying a cached page. Perhaps they just released another batch for sale right after I tried accessing the page through Edge.

They’ve been going in and out of stock over the past hour. Right now I see gold and rose gold in both 32 and 128GB, and silver 128GB is also available.

I hope this is a market test. In the iPod days Apple crushed the market by offering an iPod at every price point, from the bottom (shuffle) to the top (touch/classic). Maybe due to high-end saturation Apple is thinking of doing that again. Imagine an SE with XS internals. Overpowered? Heck yes. But it might wipe the floor across the board.

Thanks! Finally got through on my phone. I could never cart on my iPad.

Desperate times... No, actually, it's still a great little phone. Now they need to take the XR design, shrink it down to around the SE size, and watch how many people buy it. I'm not a small phone person but I think there's a big enough market to justify an SE2. I actually think if they stuffed the A11 processor, upgraded camera, added an upgraded display to wide gamut, they could sell this thing fro $400-$450 all day.

Shoot at that price, I'm nearly tempted to pick up a 128GB.

The market for this size phone in the US is small, which is why it was discontinued.

Yeah, Right!

Offer its size in every iteration and see if it keeps its own - then talk about the market size of each iPhone!

Those people who bought the 5S - you think they vanished off the face of the earth. Take a look at their number (Statistia .com) and convince anyone that they disappeared in just 4-5 years.

I question that logic.
Is the market really small? Or is there much selection to begin with?

This was the best size phone. A full screen (with same overall size of a iPhone SE) with in-screen fingerprint sensor and WITHOUT that ugly notch will be the best iPhone ever. I don't mind little thicker phone to accommodate the bigger battery for full screen. IMHO will be a best seller for Apple.

Dang, was hoping to pick one up when I got home, but gone. Hope they find more.
Keep on checking back. They have been going in and out of stock. I believe they still produce this phone for sale in India (or at least did).

Good iPhone. Good start.
The GUI concept with Home Button was the most fluid and uncompromising in Apple's history IMO.

As for price:
"As of now, this appears to be U.S. only.". What the heck?

No business in China? No business in India? And elsewhere?

Hopefully they’re clearing some shelf space for SE2.
This is just clearing all remaining stock of the SE before the SE 2 can be announced.

Great price. This means Apple will support its 64-bit iPhones (5S onwards) a little longer, I guess.

Great minds:);)!

Well, that’s great to see. :)
And again, I tripped up by not waiting another month..I would have purchased an SE instead of the 8+ last month if the SE was available.
Edit: none to be had.
It looks like they're all out of stock already.

The iPhone SE is available from authorized Apple resellers - typically cell service providers. AC is available for them.
