I wonder if this is Apple admitting they made a boo boo with the last round of iPhone's and there pricing. The prices of the XS and XS Max are high and as a result I think it means people will keep hold of their iPhone's longer, as a result Apple really need to give people a reason to upgrade.

Personally I'm still using my iPhone X and it's a great device, I might upgrade to this years iPhone depending on what Apple do, however if it's only a small update i'll continue to hold onto my iPhone X. I've been a big iPhone fan for many years and if I'm thinking this way, god knows how other people are thinking.

But for consuming media and sending messages the SE is horrible to use compared to a Plus screen.

And the Plus screen is horrible to use compared to my iPad or MacBook. The point is that we all find our own balance between portability and function. I want a small phone that fits easily in my front pants pocket, and the SE is all that Apple offers that works for that.

iPhone SE 128GB, $299
vs
iPod Touch 128GB, $299

Very much yes. An iPod touch with 30-meter res GPS(part of the cellular radio even if you aren't on a network), Ambient Light sensor, and Touch-ID.

While this is a good move by Apple, and should remind them not to ditch the small form factor market again, it still isn't enough to bring me personally back. They need to either make a sub-5" device (even 5" is a bit too large for me to one-hand conformable, and fit in most of my pockets), decrease the price, or offer external drive I/O and a file system.

I can get an unlocked MotoE5 Play, plus a SanDisk 128GB Extreme (A2 / UHS-I / V30 / U3 / Class 10) for half what Apple wants. Total Commander gives robust File System access (to the limit of not rooting). Paragon's exFAT/NTFS driver allows me external USB thumb/SSD/HDD drives. The SnapDragon 425 and A9 are fairly close. I can even handle iTunes Sync with DoubleTwist. Also FM Radio reception with connect 3.5mm headphone wire. The only thing the MotoE5 Play does not have is a gyroscope, which is require in combination with an accelerometer for most VR Apps.

This post is exactly like someone comparing a Creative Zen to an iPod fifteen years ago. lol

Last year I upgraded from the SE to the Xr but keeping the SE with a second number for the times I need a or want a smaller phone. Actually if I had to choose between the 2 I can tell you I would never ever go back to SE size. The Xr is just so much better but of course as well so much more expensive at the same time. You must be able to afford such a luxuary item.

IN regard to the article. I am under the impression Apples iPhone strategy this year is not spot on. Maybe they misjudged the market.

Holding out for an SE2, with the latest CPU, 3-4gb ram, 128gb storage, LCD display, bluetooth 5, good wireless performance... so a flagship smaller iPhone.

What did Apple miss?

Isn't there a happy size between 4" and 4.7" screen?

But for consuming media and sending messages the SE is horrible to use compared to a Plus screen.

This is not a leap from 27" CRT TV to a 55" LCD/LED TV, with the picture quality jump from 480 to 1080p!

If I adjust to watching video on a 4" screen of a smartphone, the bigger 4.7" or 5.5" screens even with 4K resolution won't be a huge leap in quality to increase the watching pleasure. These sizes are just convenient. The more easy it is to carry the phone around, the better.

Hold your 1080p or 4K laptop in front of your face and watch the same program on your 55" UHD TV, even a HDTV - the watching experience from the TV is far better even if the laptop field is larger in the eye-field.

Only typing on the screen keyboard and reading small print are painful experiences.

Man..these are selling like pancakes. I checked the site 8 hours ago and all colors with 32GB and 128GB capacities were available. Now the only variant left is the 32GB Rose Gold.. I wish they would sell this worldwide.

Here I am holding out hope that maybe there will be a second wave of these. I have a 32GB SG already but I’m on month 1 of 6 to get it unlocked from ATT prepaid, and my carriers are T-Mobile and Verizon, AT&T is just slow and annoying to deal with compared to those two where I am.

The fact, that 128GB units (in space Gray) were sold out in minutes, shows, how popular this "low cost" "entry model" is among tech enthusiasts.

Every heavy user with a heavy data plan needs storage, and while camera, display and other components surely are important, it is the size and the design of the SE, that lets Cooks "super fancy tech monsters like XR and XS" stand in the rain.

The metal edges of this phone, the cubic shape, the flush cam make it a classy phone. I follows the philosophy of Dieter Rams, chief designer at Braun for many years, who was admired by Jobs and young Ive. This phone is Bauhaus style, that design language is 100 years old (just turned 100) and never gets old.

The SE could easily bi displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York while the current "flagship phones" will never make it to the hall of fame. Within years, they will look extremely dated.

If I wouldn't know better, I believe that this is wat Cook exactly wants. These +1000$ phones are supposed to look dated within a few years, so customers buy new ones. It is the greed of former CFO Cook, who derails the Apple train. The only chance to silence the critics is, that Apple indeed comes up with an SE2, with newest tech and a design, that is absolutely flawless and timeless. And by flawless, I mean with a flush camera.

Apple has to be happy with people buying new phones every 4-5 years, not every 1-2 years. Why? Because there is not much room for innovation left, there is simply no more reason to upgrade that frequent and this is a good thing. Apple devices should last. They should be valuable at all times, even if they came with a low price. Apple has reponsibility as la leading tech company and as a leading example for design schools.

If they leave this path, it will be a very sad thing. Tim and Jony, I hope You guys are reading this. No offence but you have to turn that ship around, find Your mojo again and make an impression. Leave your footprints in history.

This is perfect timing. My wife’s SE got pretty banged up on a recent trip and her AppleCare+ is expired. I’ve been on the lookout for one factory unlocked with 128GB in good condition as a replacement for her but haven’t found one.

Glad I waited. As soon as I saw this post I bought a 128GB SE in gold with AppleCare+. This will give her another few good years on the SE, which meets her needs perfectly. She really can’t get used to bigger phones.

I actually can't understand why they dropped this model. They specifically marketed this to women and people with smaller hands. It's not like that group of people suddenly disappeared...

Well, if we're designing an SE2 it would have an edge-to-edge screen, the notch, and FaceID. That would make the screen as big as a plus sized phone while keeping the form factor.

Could Apple sell it for $300, while preserving its margins?

If Apple really is selling subscriptions and not hardware, why not sell it with an Apple Music/iCloud subscription? $300 clean, or $250 with a one year iCloud/Apple Music subscription?

Consider the Apple Watch S4 should be close to the performance of iPhone SE. I wonder if they could use the S4, or S5, in what Apple calls SiP ( System in package ). The whole iPhone SE Logic Broad Shrink its size to 1/5th. Leaving lots more space for Battery. And Apple likely make the iPhone SE even thinner, sort of like iPad Pro thickness or even less. Shrink the bezel a little bit more, Calling it iPhone Air or iPhone Classic?

There are people who wants their Smartphone not as a devices for Video, Movies or Games. Some just use it to read emails, text, WhatsApp, and may be music.

Trying to sell a thinnest and smallest iPhone for $399, or more like $499 which is the same price as Apple Watch S4 with cellular.

Desperate times... No, actually, it's still a great little phone. Now they need to take the XR design, shrink it down to around the SE size, and watch how many people buy it. I'm not a small phone person but I think there's a big enough market to justify an SE2. I actually think if they stuffed the A11 processor, upgraded camera, added an upgraded display to wide gamut, they could sell this thing fro $400-$450 all day.

Shoot at that price, I'm nearly tempted to pick up a 128GB.

I agree. But apple should stop the XR thing.
Just rebrand the current XR to SE+ next year don’ t update it, sell it for $649 and release a 5 inch SE. with faceid, Liquid Retina and new aspect ratio for $499 and just update it every 2 years.
Rename the iPhone 8/plus as the iPhone Classic, from $399 for the next 2 years.
Drop the iPhone 7.
So three lines:
iPhone classic, iPhone se and the high end x line up. Drop the classic line up after 2 years.
And we’ ll have a more consistent line-up: X and SE, both in 2 formats.

I hope apple could do something similar to the iPad and the MacBook line up. To simplify the line-up.

iPad:

iPad SE , one of 7.9 and 9.7 and iPad Pro: 11 and 12.9 inch(perhaps even adding a new iPad Pro 9 inch for midrange at around 499-599)

MacBook :
MacBook se (or air) of 12 inch($999) and 13,3 inch($1099)
MacBook Pro of 13 and 15 inch

Just 2 line-ups in each category, with 2 sizes in each line-up.

Update the more affordable SE line -ups every 2 years(perhaps even dropping the price a little after one year) , and the high end line-up each year.

They could even do this to the HomePod , AirPod and Apple Watch line up.

But please apple , make the line-up more transparent for the average consumer, and yourself.
