What professional would want such a gawdy computer? Like the specs, the size, the change to black, but the design is silly. I would be more embarrassed to show this off than a gaming rig with disco lights flashing inside of it.

I wonder if this may be indicative of pricing. I can't imagine a professional system costing $3000+ would be advertised in a theatre of general consumers. The hardware specs suggest a hefty price tag, but I don't understand why Apple would target this audience (no pun intended).

Thoughts?
Apple (like Dell & HP) offers different configurations with different CPUs and GPUs. That means it is possible that the entry model costs less than 2000 US$.

Have you seen it up close yet?
I think it looks awesome.

Its performance and overall size make it totally understated.
I would run the unit without the cover but I think it would over heat.

That would be a great starting price for the Mac Pro, but I still think that's about $1000 too expensive for general consumers.

maybe I'm crazy, but I'm not even slightly teased.

if the point of the video is the pretty and sleek casing of the product, well it's a beautiful trash can. But if we're talking about the practical usage of this machine, you're going to need a hell of a lot more cords to get this turkey flying .

funny how they don't include the price in these "Teasers"

They are advertising in theaters because Jobs is out. Why not advertise during your own movie? Most people seeing that movie will be Apple fans.

That's a large part of Apples slipping sales problem right there

Apple has $100,000,000,000 in the bank. They can advertise wherever they please.

Whether or not it is a good decision for the shareholders is another story...

why would they advertise in movie theaters for what will likely be a $5000 desktop computer? They need to be targeting people who need these machines not the general public

It's branding. Same reason that companies make concept cars or fund formula one racing. If you buy an iPhone you know it's from a company that makes high end pro equipment, with a Samsung phone on the other hand you have to be content with their expertise in selling refrigeroasters.

benchmarks of the 12-core Xeon E5-2697 v2 processor have demonstrated mixed results,

Do you REALLY think that Apple will fook this up? Really?

Every single time Apple has hinted at innovation they have blown everyone away. Go back and read the first tepid reviews of the iPod, iPhone, iPad, iMac, etc. ("OMG! The killed the floppy drive!"). The pundits and "experts" have killed Apple a hundred times in the last three decades. And yet Apple is only the most valuable company in the world.

All the naysayers are using the best buggy whip ever made. And all they are asking for is a faster horse.

The Mac Pro is setting a new paradigm.

You are off by a good 45% actually. On the low end. And any company with over a hundred billion cash in the bank is doing something right, even if you doubt it.

I have over 6000 shares at an average purchase price of under $20. Consider me to be a satisfied shareholder.

This may be a far out suggestion, but any chance the new Mac Pro's could be less expensive than their predecessors? If the casing is plastic, instead of aluminum and Apple is expecting folks to plug in expansion options (along with the hyped, supply-chain wizardry of Tim Cook), maybe? A base model would have appeal to people who might not need it, but would still want it because of its look, coupled with Apple's Retina monitors sometime in the future. Just a thought.

While I agree, I also wonder: if true, why advertise to the masses in movie theaters (95% of whom will never even consider a computer in this price range)?

So what, filmmakers never go to the movies?

I am one and I go often.

A professional looking for a powerful and fast platform with enormous expansion and flexibility would look at this and swoon. All they would have to do is look past their current paradigm. Just like the film editors of old had to look past their cutting machines. Just like the newsmen of old had to surrender their beloved typewriters. Just like the newsies of today have to embrace Twitter et al or get left behind. Etc.

Change is good. And I am not the first person to say that.

Apple led the change in many technologies... Newton (before its time). GUI. Mouse. USB. Cloud. Smartphone. Tablets. Music playback and distribution. The shift in app development. My daughter's backpack went from 35lbs to 5 lbs when her school switched to iPads this year.

Bitch and howl and disparage all you want. Just apologize when you figure out you were wrong.

I'm sure a lot of people left the theatre absolutely stoked about getting that new air purifier Apple is making.

"Does it have a HEPA filter? OH I BET IT HAS A HEPA FILTER"!

They should market it as a feature:

We got this awesome super quiet fan anyways, might as well filter your air at the same time.

It's like a fancy restaurant menu, with, for example, expensive wines. They put a $5,000 bottle of wine on there that will only attract a very limited number of people (big spenders obviously), but the general public is now more inclined to spend $1,000 on a bottle of wine, whereas if the $5,000 bottle wasn't there, they might settle for a $100 bottle. It's simple marketing, and it works. The Mac Pro will sell a lot more large screen, high end iMacs. And in Apple's case, they also make a core segment of their audience (big corporate spenders) very happy. It's a win win!

I agree it will be ridiculous in price. Hell look at the rMBPs, that is an indication of how bad it will be.

$2700 entry, well-equipped. Bet me.

And, believe me Junior, Pro users will have no problem with the price of entry. Only posers will bitch.

Those same naysayers are begging to plug USB and HDMI cables into their tablets. Don't they know tablets are meant to be mobile? They're not supposed to be attached to the TV. Idiots.

Could also be a part of apples push towards 4K displays (and even TV). You need something to actually drive those display resolutions.
I really want a new Mac Pro AND a 4K display for editing, and the new pro can drive a 4K display right out of the box

I think they're going for the halo effect. It's Apple's most powerful computer and its most starkly new design in recent years, so they want people to notice and say "Oooooh, ahhhhhh." I doubt they're hoping to boost sales of the Mac Pro itself with these ads.

Uhm, a subset of people who go to the theater frequently are also people that might make films, especially Indie film makers. Very targeted advertising I would think.

Seriously? I bet there are tens of thousands of people dying to show that thing off. Count me as one of them.

The casing is Aluminum. its on the MP page at apple.com. :)

Clear thinking.

Now, answer these questions... did Apple support BluRay or HD-DVD? And when the winner was clear, why didn't Apple throw in with the champion?

The really big HDTV push in the last 3 years has been for 3D-TV. What percentage market share does 3D-TV have? And what percentage of 3D-TV owners use 3D-TV?

The biggest paradigm shift in households in the last decade has been the ability to immediately express your life into the digital world (progressing through texting - camera phones - social media - smartphone apps linking to social media, etc - Google Glass is perhaps the ultimate (bastard) son of this progression). So what is the next paradigm shift - is it just better access to that data? Or is it a better, more relevant and immediate view of that data?

I think simply expecting Apple to lead the way toward more pixels is simply selling them short. I believe that Apple will lead innovation toward truly connecting - while actively and dynamically filtering - content for your consumption.

The fact is, the Internet is a huge and unwieldy place, and so-called social media is likely 98% crap and 2% content. What if someone were able to bring you what was important to you, rather than simply bringing EVERYTHING to you?

I believe Apple is attempting to do exactly that, and in a meaningful way.

Google thinks they are doing that, but actually they are simply selling you something. Apple is trying to make your e-experience relevant again. Just like email did when you first tried it.

Why was the iMac so successful? Because it easily and quickly and simply connected you to what was relevant. The same can be said of iPhoto, iPhone, iPad, etc.
