Um no, that’s not what is happening here.

The throttling was introduced to prevent random shutdowns in phones whose batteries have degraded through normal wear and tear. There was nothing to recall because there was nothing faulty with the phones in the first place. Apple has even gone so far as to assert that they will continue to do this for subsequent iPhones via future software updates.

That’s not true. I had an iPhone 6s that I returned with the shut down issue. It was less than 6 months old. It wasn’t part of the iPhone 6s shutdown recall. The replacement phone I got had the same issue. Checked the serial number and it wasn’t part of the bad batch as well. When 10.2.1 came out, the shutdowns went away. So the shutdown issue is definitely not due to just wear and tear.

Users are just ignorant. Apple are doing the right thing. Otherwise we would have continue shutdown on older iPhones.
A recent real life benchmark showed most model running better with lastest iOS. Apple is doing the right thing
I have an iPhone 6S Plus bought the Apple Care then after 1 year or later I didn't know that my battery is dying not knowing the problem exist because it's still last me most of the day. If I know that my battery is only holding up for 3 hours without throttling my iPhone. Then I am entitled for what I paid for that extended warranty and if I don't know then Apple is getting away from that responsibility.

My issue is my 6 Plus slowed way down. I still had two days battery usage as I don't use it to the same level as many folks do. No complaints at all. Until an update that crippled it. Then even with my less then demanding usage, it became intolerable to use. I had no idea why. So in a sense, Apple is saying a $100 battery replacement was all I needed rather then going out and blowing a thousand bucks on an 8 Plus? They wouldn't tell me this?? My 6 Plus went to Gazelle, so now I can't even get a battery and keep going. This "helpful", secret "benefit" cost me a lot of money I didn't need to spend.

Spin it any way you want. I know how I feel about it, and it's not good.

No, they they just decided to slow down all old phones to avoid shutdown issues, regardless of your battery health (through the general software update.) A new battery wouldn't do anything, as the "feature" is applied based on phone generation.

This is all simply smoke and mirrors, Apples A chips do not provide that much speed increase from generation to generation. In order for the company to "seem" that their newest phones are faster than the previous gen, they design updates that slow older phones to trick consumers into thinking the newer phones are faster.
Then they provide updates to fix problems that are non existent and sneak in code that throttles the Chip and software. It was a very smart marketing ploy until they got caught yet again.
Example the A10 chip provides practically no speed increase over the A9 chip. Maybe a pipeline or two more to code in the newer software that you can ONLY get in the newer phones. It's a practice that I can't 100% prove and make no claims my statement is 100% fact. However, being in the technical business for over 30 years. I have seen many things that companies do to get sales up and, provide the consumer with a piece of hardware that is no better than the last Generation. Intel and AMD practice the exact same marketing ploy. Generation I7 is no faster than Generation I6, unless we are talking about how fast money leaves our wallets to pay for such shenanigans.

That's my argument. They say they are helping with my "old" battery, but they didn't tell me. So now my 6 Plus is gone and I can't do anything anyway. Score for Apple.

Maybe Apple should offer a battery replacement for less money than an entire entry level android phone. I thought about a replacement for my old iPhone 6, than I saw the price.
If you can afford an iPhone you can afford the battery.

So many cry babies out there. I bet if apple released an update that removed the power management issue which then causes the phone to randomly shut down because of the battery wear apple would still get sued.

Either that or add a setting in the settings menu that lets you turn the function on or off to give people the option to choose for themselves.

its not a benchmark app, its a simple app that shows the phones details including processor operating fequency. phone sitting idle with a fully charge battery and the cpu clock is at 911 Mhz, thats a problem

What makes you think that that 911 MHz number is anywhere near accurate? It's not from any official Apple system report app.

Apple advertised a certain level of performance, a flagship level of performance, and six months later ...

Where do you find a numeric level of processor speed mentioned in their specification documents?

Geekbench numbers on MacRumors are not an official Apple specification.

Yes they would.

Because 1 year old phones shouldn’t be randomly shutting off due to battery drain.

There’s a defect in these affected devices.

Bam, very well put.
In todays tech a years newer computer, tablet, smartphone will not make much difference in performance.
With Apple last years model starts slowing down artificially as the newer models start coming out.
Wow, look how fast the new iPhone runs, it boots up faster too and feels more "snappy" :D
Lets charge another $999, why not.
Lets get on that yearly upgrade cycle to constantly keep enriching Apples pockets:D
Great idea, lets pay them $280 extra for added warranty.
We dont want that fragile back glass or front OLED screen to crack and have to pay $550 on top of the $999 we already paid them.
And Apple is like, keep giving us your money fools :D

Idiots.......Its depressing to read this crap, Apple doesn't owe anyone an explanation, you don't like how a product works or is managed, go buy a better product. Good luck with that.......

Apple survived when they got caught tracking users years ago (iPhone 4?).... they'll survive this, too.

What, are people really going to go to Android? Psh... yeah, good luck.

Though, it will be interesting how google and Samsung (and the rest) respond. Will they even?

(And wow! 19 pages after only ~4 hours since article post! Haha)

Simple solution: Battery warning popup. Replace battery at Apple Store as required.

Apple's solution: Reduce performance discretely. Don't tell anyone until the media starts digging. "Prolong" the life on an iPhone by making it unbearably slow.

Whoever at Apple approved this decision is a moron.

My girlfriend's iPhone was experiencing those shutdowns.
They wouldn't replace the battery. We've even offered to pay Apple's out of warranty fee, they still wouldn't do it.
Battery health was at 87%, so Apple didn't give a ****.

Bought a 18€ battery myself, watched 2 YouTube videos, did the change in under 10 minutes, works flawlessly since.

The best thing Samsung can do is keep their mouths shut on anything battery related. The note 7 isn’t that ancient history enough for them to start casting disparaging remarks about others battery issues.

Shhhhhhh, you're making too much sense. If this was reddit, you'd be downvoted into oblivion lol

I wish people would stop conflating issues. No, not all older iPhones are throttled. Only when the battery degrades past the point where peak draw could damage components (which the system initiates an automatic shutdown to prevent). Don’t conflate the 6s battery program with this software feature. Totally separate things

This one is gonna hurt!

Apple F*cked up, And these lawsuits are just getting started. Come on Tim, this is amateur hour.
There’s zero grounds for a lawsuit. “You made my old phone stop shutting down randomly and it lasts longer, I’m so mad!” Yeah, that’ll go over well.

“Planned obsolescence”? Really? Apple, in my opinion, is an industry leader as far as supporting their older devices. Planned obsolescence is buying an android phone.... what’s Oreos distribution at 5%?

If Apple lets the devices die, people will complain.
If Apple tries to mitigate it, people complain.

Yeah, we'll see if they take your advice :p

A second lawsuit has been filed. This is going to get ugly. Apple needs to do some damage control fast.

They already have done the damage control by implementing software to prevent unexpected shutdowns.

These lawsuits always happen when there's a media storm that presents an opportunity to go chase some of Apple's money. This is nothing new and nothing to worry about. As I said, Wall Street took this nonsense in its stride on Thursday. AAPL is fine.

If they do take some shots, they'll certainly steer clear of the battery angle haha.

True, they have few good options. They screwed up with design. The right move would be to admit this and replace the phones (although at this point it's not clear if there are any properly designed iPhones, but Apple could buy out the iPhonesso that people could buy good phones like Samsung did with Galaxy Note 7)

So planned obsolesce no. Poor power management at the fringe on yeah. They did not design the power management to be able to tolerate dips in power when the cells are old. This was a giant oversight. They should just make the battery exchange 49.99 and be done with it. Be more aggressive with the hey your battery is dead please replace it.

whats most bizarre is that 10.2.1 came out in jan2017

its almost like they implemented throttling, knowing 2017 would be a weak year in sales cause of market saturation and product maturity, to help sales.

Not sure how that's different than criminal.

also, why throttle 7 starting with 11.2 when at the start of this year, 6s was affected not 7? anyone not on 11.2 will have a phone shutdown on them in due time? seems... dubious.
