Apple Being Sued for 'Purposefully Slowing Down Older iPhone Models' [Updated]

you have low standards then.
I should report this post due to insults but I’ll let it slide for now.
[doublepost=1514313202][/doublepost]
I rest my case.

You refuse to acknowledge structural integrity improvement to 6s was because there was SOMETHING to bendgate. And you accept tab refreshing that makes the iPad Air 1, unusable for anything more than 1 tab safari browsing, even with nothing else running on the device.

I can't continue on with you, as all you do is carry Apple's water, 100% of the time, disregarding all other evidence.

Happy Holidays
going to cut my losses here as well. Happy holidays to you as well.

Reporting to you ?

Nope.
Reporting right here in MacRumors forums. You can go look in the iPhone and iOS 11 forums (etc.) yourself.
There are both people who post about serious slow downs, as well as people reporting no slow down.

Even on older iPhones running the latest OS.

There's also someone with a brand new iPad Pro reporting a serious slow down after an OS update.
Why would an OS update slow down a new iPad, but not an old iPhone 5s?
Something strange must be going on for some old devices to still be running fast, and some brand new devices to be seriously slowed. That can't be a battery age problem.

Apple should be using higher capacity batteries, that even after some degradation from use can handle the power demands of the CPU for more than a year. But they could never do that because heaven forbid, they might have to make the phone a little thicker.

This doesn't seem right to me, Apple refusing to replace out of warranty batteries. From their site

iPhone battery and power repair costs
We’ll test your iPhone to see if it has a battery issue or a different power issue. Your repair fees depend on the diagnosis and if the issue is covered under warranty or AppleCare+.

Our warranty covers a defective battery, but it doesn’t cover wear from normal use.

  • If you're covered under AppleCare+, we'll replace your battery at no charge if it retains less than 80 percent of its original capacity.
  • If your iPhone needs battery replacement and it’s not covered, the service fee is $79.
  • If your iPhone has another power issue, we’ll give you the repair price after we determine the cause.
I am referring to the bold text. It doesn't say the battery has to be under 8O percent for out of warranty replacements like the line above it for AppleCare+.

Your thoughts on this? Also... Does Apple refuse to service your phone for screen repairs or other damages if you had your battery changed out at a third party repair center? I have two phones that need new batteries atm.

ETA: and one of the phones has a busted screen in addition to the battery problem.

The engineering point in this is that a battery's charge capacity is measured at a certain constant discharge rate.
A "good" battery (with low ESR) has a capacity that is independent of discharge rate (in C). Bad batteries do not:

Capacity vs discharge rate

So although the capacity may still be 85% - if this is at a reduced discharge rate by a software-limited CPU speed then then is not a fair reporting of the battery capacity. But I'm sure Apple support will just lie to their customers (see Retina Image Retention, Screen coating issues, nVidia soldering issues, MacBook Batteries)

Edit: clarification

I worked at Apple Support. It's a little bit unfair to claim Apple Support will lie to you when the people working there are following orders. I would love to be able to tell the truth about a lot of stuff but at the time that would have costed me my job.

Eh?

Lying because you are ordered to lie is still lying?

Or am i missing something?

And here was I thinking that Apple had over $230 billion cash resources that could hire more staff to do such things.

Not directly usable if the staff is supposed to work in the US :)

Yes, Apple has over $230 billion in off-shore held accounts.

But here in the US, they're something like $60 billion in debt.

It says "If your iPhone needs battery replacement"... so if they wish, they can claim it doesn't need it yet. While it seems like the same test is used, they could claim that it doesn't.

Thank you. I kind of thought that too but the AppleCare+ implicitly states the 80 percent so I wasn't sure.

This is a stupid excuse, literally, if batteries start degrading simply change the battery, like samsung phones, if your battery in a samsung phone screws itself up, just go to the store, buy a battery and plug & play, apple just do this for you to buy their phones...

Based on your experience, can someone walk in and ask for a battery replacement? Or does apple first need to test the battery

About time. What they are doing is highly unethical. Their involvement with my property stops after payment.

does stopping that involvement includes security updates? And explain how it is unethical to actively try to EXTEND the life of your device?

I7Guy and Michael Geoff take the same stance.

Unless Apple admits wrongdoing, it's just conspiracy. And when Apple actually admitted doing something, they both came to Apple's defense and took every word Apple provided them.

Hey, you know, we can read Apple's official response. We don't need either of you repeating what Apple has been saying to defend itself.

The 4.7 and 5.5 iPhone are some of the largest phone in the market, yet, they can't fit a half-decent size battery in them. Oh...to think they took away headphone jack to make room for something....o_O

Hm. It’s a bit odd how my 5s, which is at 83% battery capacity, has never had a single shutdown, but the 6 and 6s have.

I also have a Touch 5 and 4s that have crappy batteries, but they never randomly shut down.

So something must be wrong with the 6 series that Apple isn’t admitting. Pushing this CPU throttling “feature” unannounced was very sneaky of them imo.

the later model iPhones use way more power than earlier phones.

To be fair, the only Samsung phones with removable batteries are the J3 and the J7, their budget phones.

Every galaxy phone released after the S6 had a sealed battery.

Hey - here it is! The lawsuit(s) that Apple will lose, lose, lose.

They cannot win this. Dump stock if you own any. The iPhone X is shipping at millions and millions less than expected - people aren't upgrading. This will be the icing on the cake.

Tim downright lost his mind, a $1,000 phone and throttled devices that were covered up - LOL. When a company thinks they can do anything...they'll usually make a mistake or two, but this is simply disastrous.

I suspect Tim Cook won't be helming Apple very much longer. I give him one more year. Quote this post for posterity...

Love this thread. 2448 posts as i write this and I bet that <1% of the folks making definitive "Apple will lose in court" statements are even lawyers. Much less lawyers that specialize in this kind of law.
Posting just to subscribe and keep up with joviality.
