You expect there to be some type of reaction like that to an identical iPhone? It's nothing but a refresh and not comparable to the release of the iPad which was a tablet computer (a category which Apple did not have at the time).

Regular people don't care that it's "nothing but a refresh." I myself am probably going to sit this one out, unless I break my phone or something, but I personally know about 10 people who will buy this one within the first couple of weeks that it's out. Some of them are 3GS users who never got the 4, some of them are Verizon customers who didn't want to switch in January because they expected a new one in June. Regular people know enough about the process to ask when the new one's coming out so that they don't buy one right before the new one comes out, but that's it. They don't have any idea what a "giant disappointment" it is because they don't read the tech blogs. Apple's going to sell millions of these.

call me crazy, but i don't think Apple is too concerned with the minuscule population of cell phone geeks that are overly-concerned with having a larger screen and 4G. when everything is said and done the 4S will replace the 4 as the top-selling smartphone.

Geeks aside, the average consumer will go with the cheaper "4". It looks identical and is cheaper. The "4" will likely remain the best selling iPhone, until next Summer/Fall.

Voice recognition is a toy, for the most part, and will wane in use. It's novelty will wear off.

Spec. bump is nice but is missing internal/external hardware innovations. A larger screen would have sealed the deal. So now, the deal is unsealed :)

I'll be waiting for a Nexus Prime vs. 4S review

Vote with your wallets/purses folks.

terrible. I think ill jump ship for year and see if Apple comes up with something better than a camera and faster processor...

i also think apple blew it, im already lookin for an galaxy s2 in white, second hand corse!! il keep also my i4 bs its great device but iphone 4s is ... one !!

Well said,
and for all those people saying "im going to android" go ahead no one is stopping you but $100 says you will return

I am going to Android, and I will be back to iPhone, when Apple decides to get their **** together. I, like many others ITT, was looking forward to a new redesign and better specs than just a new camera, faster processor, and a useless voice feature I'll never use. So I wait for the Nexus Prime or HTC Holiday. When Apple drops an iPhone with LTE and stats to match comparable (and capable) Android phones, I'll be back for sure.

the keynote

What a complete joke. Have had it playing in the background, checking in on the video from time to time. Half the damn thing was a rehash of WWDC, talking about iOS 5. Why invite people to this event and spend a half hour on something you already covered in June?

66 minutes in and not one interesting thing. Infinity Blade 2? Cards? New-but-not-really-new iPod info? Yawn.

The camera does seem impressive, especially response time. Hardly worthy of buying the phone though.

The best part thus far was the half-assed are-you-serious applause when the 4s was announced.

And shame on Apple for removing the Siri app from the store.

Overall a poor event today.

A lot of fuss... and this is what they brought: (facts)

A phone which has a better antenna, but when you check the details it merely solves a problem on the iPhone4.
A new much better camera, but wait… I’m already having space issues in my iPhone 4 to store all my music and media. So? Is this really handy? Or is it just going to force me to get an iCloud paid account to keep my phone with enough space?
A new key feature, finally they claim they solved voice recognition issues. Honestly more than anything else voice recognition is a social tabu. Did you notice that people only talked to their phones while alone in Apple’s adverts?
Would you really keep a conversation with your phone say during a dinner in a restaurant with 6 people sitting next to you?
Then a faster processor. Guys… when improvements are mostly based on “FASTER PROCESSORS” we are in the Dell/HP Intel World.
The GPS features are the only thing of interest to me (to be honest).

So basically, please give me my iOS5 which runs on my iPhone 4.

Won’t be surprised if next iPhone’s release is an extended memory package to attach to current models.

By the way, they should have picked a better time with better news to bring Cook as new Apple spokesman. People will think unconsciously “Cook, the guy who blew apple”?

Today's Keynote = Disappointment

Seriously. We should know by now that every second Apple keynote is a let down.

No iPhone5, no new MacPro's

You'd think a company with so much cash under their butts would do some things faster. Especially in such a fast evolving market like the mobile one.

I know that you'll(edit: I meant the Today's Keynote = Disappointment thread) get thumbed down a lot, but I agree with you. They could have just released Siri for iPhone 4, and no one would even need a 4S.
The iPods weren't even touched.
Overall a let down for Cook's first keynote.

I've noticed that when Steve Jobs takes a medical leave, we get an iPhone x update. Do you think that this is a coincidence?

Don't like it? Just buy a freaking Android phone that'll be outdated with no software updates in half a year(used android phones for 2 years).

Seriously... And when the iPhone 5 comes out next year thingsll be different. ^^

Major Let Down

Please do not attempt to justify the ball Apple just dropped by telling me people will buy them anyway. Phone sale metrics are no excuse for Apple to degenerate into AAPL. The Apple I fell in love with is never complacent, always innovating. I don't care about their market size -- I care about imagination. And today we got greeting cards.

As a 3GS owner, I've admittedly been coveting the iPhone 4 design. And while I'm sure I'd like a 4S better than my 3GS, I'm sick of being stuck in the 'S'-cycle swamp. Apple wasted SIX MONTHS of my upgrade cycle only to release a phone that's already outdated. If iPhone 2G customers upgraded to a 3GS after two years, why should 3GS customers have to upgrade to a 4S in 2.5 years?

The 4S MIGHT have been an acceptable upgrade back in June. But Apple really needed to introduce a larger, higher quality screen size today. I neither want nor expect a complete redesign every year, but I'm also dissatisfied with a bezel that wastes a full third of the front of my phone. I also find it arrogant that Apple let demand build and hype escalate, only to show up late and unprepared. How can they justify phoning in their most highly anticipated product after 1.5 years of lead time and ~50B in cash on hand? Because people will buy them anyway? That's insulting and unwise.

I predict that Apple is going to be forced to release the phone consumers expected today no later than June 2012. The 4S is already behind the curve; I doubt investors will tolerate such a lazy release cycle moving forward. The 4S might sell like hotcakes, but such an uninspiring showing after an unnecessarily long wait may have damaged the brand. Today might teach consumers not to get their hopes up for Apple products. I'm not ready for Android (shudder), so for now I'm praying that my 3GS will last until WWDC. In the meantime, I hope Apple stops wasting capital trying to ban competing products and gets back to work.

I'm thinking the only thing Apple blew was their failed marketing delivery. If they would've simply called the iPhone 4S the iPhone 5, all this nonsensical disappointment would be mute. It is faster, a world phone and SIRI is a nice tool. Easy to justify.

Worst thing is some would say the 5 didn't meet all the unreasonable expectations. Apple usually makes little improvements with their computers.

But at least it sounds much better. People would rather say they bought a 5 than a little bumped 4S. Then, Apple still has room to make significant upgrades to the inevitable iPhone 6.

I wasn't expecting LTE, but why no HSPA+, Apply, why?????!!!!

I'd even forget about the whole screen size frustration.

Damn you, Apple.

Global markets has been falling for days because of Greece default fears, so this is not a good time to say if the fall is because of the market or because of iPhone 4S...

The drop and subsequent rise coincides precisely with the start and end of the keynote.

Not a stretch to say the announcement caused the drop.

no other way around it

no 4g and same old boring design

hello samsung

You're insane... iPhone 4 is still one of the best looking phones on the market today.

As I said yesterday;

"Why would apple release 2 versions of their updated phone (a5, new camera, etc). It would be better business (and follow apples general pattern of minor yearly updates) for them to release the 4s now, charge full price and next year release a redesigned 5 with a few more substantial upgrades and charge full price again.

My best guess on why not just make the 5 now is that they are waiting for LTE to be worked out before calling the phone an iPhone 5. 5 is one of those landmark numbers they would want to make more special."

Go get your Samsung and I'll go get the better, faster phone. ;)

Agree. I think the best metric to measure WS reaction to iPhone 5 is looking at Google. I would expect Google to boost up if the market believes this flagship product is a potential failure.

Anybody who doesn't think Apple blew it is hopelessly lost in their fanboydom.
