While i expected the 4S over a redesigned 5, the main reason I'm pissed is that there was NO reason for them to stray from the normal july release. Why make us wait 3-4 months extra just for a phone that is the same as the 3g->3gs?

Maybe because of a major earthquake in Japan that disrupted the supply chain in the spring and put production back several months?

It's obvious here that the biggest disappointment is that it took Apple 16 months to come up with a new chip and camera (at least from a hardware perspective). If Apple had come up with this upgrade 6 months or so after the iPhone 4 release or even when it brought the white iPhone 4, then most would be wow'd.
I can't believe that this is what Apple had originally spec'd out. Again I repeat myself, I can't believe that 16 months later they come out and announce a 4S, it just doesn't make sense to me. I'm not knocking the 4S I'm just perplexed with the duration of this upgrade. This is a 6-month-type-of-upgrade not 16 months!!! Just doesn't make sense to me

Everyone I spoke to yesterday (none are tech savvy, but all have the iPhone 4), were all happy because they do not feel they need to upgrade (dish out more $$) since it's the same phone (get it, the perception is that it is the same phone).

I currently have the 3S and going to get the 4S anyway. So, for me it is an upgrade to what I have, but was hoping for more :(

"So people do not want markedly better phones, they want markedly different looking phones. "

No, we want both
We expect innovation and leadership now, not ho hum rebadgery after such a long wait

Apple is losing it, it's obvious, and a shame

The nerd rage here is so funny.

So why push out a whole new phone now, when they can soup up the 4 and make a ton of $$.

The 4s allows them to squeeze every last penny out of the 4 design before the launch the 5 is out.

I was hoping that the 5 would come out but I was not expecting it.

I'm very happy that ios5 is coming out soon.

Now I can hardly recognize who Apple Inc. is and I despise what they have become. Apple has come full circle and I consider them worse than Microsoft ever was.

As huge as Google is getting and getting involved in just about every area of our lives I wonder when they are going to start getting a backlash? At some point it will happen.

A lot of people are saying that there is always an uproar at these kind of events but, think about this:

Apple lives and dies by great products. When they are coming thick and fast, people will love them and become great advocates for them because of their great product range (think original Apple).

However, if these products slowly start to get worse, the Apple fans will begin to disappear, until eventually you are left with no-one to shout about your platform. (think 90's Apple)

Is anybody saying that this will happen overnight? No, of course not.

But, is this the beginning of another Apple slide from greatness to nothingness? It could be, and that is why people are up in arms.

I think this picture sums it all up really. This is taken from the "Features" section on the iPhone 4S product page on the Apple site.

Notice the bottom 4 "features" are all available on the iPhone 4.

*Sigh*

iPhone 4S is probably Apple's most ingenious master stroke to date. It's already been written off by all and sundry. Can only get better....

All of a sudden public sentiment is at an all time low. Suddenly those high expectations have turned to great disappointment...

Until the hands on reviews start rolling out and then will come the realization that Apple has done what it always does. Produce and manufacturer a product competent in all regards...

I agree, I am no fan of Google either. I used to laugh at the science fiction "B" movies from many years gone by with their portrayal of mega-corporations taking over the world. It used to be funny, now not so much.

A VAST VAST VAST VAST majority of cell users could not care less about the specs of a phone. We "geeks" and "techies" care but most people do not.

As an example just a few days ago my wife told me her friend ordered an iPhone 4 from Verizon and it was to be delivered Oct 4. I told her, "Tell her not to do it! The next iPhone is a week away!!!" The response from the buyer, "This is my first smart phone it will be fine."

Most people don't care. It's the name, "Apple" and the ecosystem they are buying.

For those of you disapointed, leave. There will be 5 more to take your place.

Funny reading all these angry posts. If Apple had stared listening to this nonsense a few years ago they wouldn't be the #1 tech firm by now.

I'm happy with my 4 and think the 4S is a great upgrade from 3G or 3GS. Not so much for me.

EDIT: they listened to some concerns and put them into their new hardware & software, but the majority of the complaints and predictions about Apple's downfall is nothing but pathetic.

Ok, so when I heard about the new antenna and system giving 4G like speeds I thought cool, that makes me a bit happier vs other updates as that's all I really cared about since 3G browsing is slow when out. Now this get's released

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2011/09/insider-predicts-october-iphone-5-release.html

Apple demonstrated fast new 14.4 Mbps data downloads that technically put the new iPhone 4S in the realm of 4G LTE competitors, but US residents won't benefit much from the increased potential because domestic carriers don't support it.

So they brag about how the phone will give users 4G like experience, and now it's found out that doesn't matter since it's not supported by U.S. networks. So while Droids and other phones can work on 4G/hspa+ across almost the entire U.S., iphone 4s users will still be stuck on slow 3G speeds..... talk about f'n fail right there, really makes no sense why they didn't enable hspa+ when AT&T offers it basically everywhere.

"..... talk about f'n fail right there, really makes no sense why they didn't enable hspa+ when AT&T offers it basically everywhere."

Is that true? That this phone does NOT support HSPA+. That would certainly make my concern about moving to Sammy much more justified.

Most of the whiners here will upgrade. They may be disappointed but once the new phone is in the wild....they'll want it.

My bigger concern is if we will see the 5 in early 2012. Its no coincidence that there were rumors and pictures of a redesigned iPhone 5.

Its going to happen and I feel like this approach Apple has taken is all about driving revenue since so many will get get the 4S and then the 5 when its out.

Of course... they have to ring every penny out of those manufacturing processes they showed us in the iPhone 4 launch video. They spent a lot of money developing the chassis for the iPhone 4... yes I'm sure they could make what we all saw in the German mock up and hoped was the iPhone 5....

...but essentially, they made a new phone out of old bits which don't cost a lot. All that = huge profit.

Still getting one though ;)

Two thoughts:

1. If you weren't prepared for the possibility of this being a 4s instead of a 5, then how you think doesn't make sense. Looking at the prior model history, it went original, 3G, 3Gs, 4. So there was a 50/50 chance this would be either the 4s or the 5.

2. Apple made the comment that this will be the fastest iPhone global roll out ever. To me, this means they've built up MORE inventory before launch than any other iPhone launch. If that's true, the 4s may have been finished and ready for a normal launch in June, but they held of launching until now (giving them time to build up inventory).

I don't remember - was there this much whining when the 3GS came out as well?
Yes. lol

Well if everyone is SOOOOO sure this will be what causes apple to fall then try to preorder one on friday and then just casually stroll in the apple store on Oct 14 and see if it will be just another day for them. The lines will be out the door, people will cry on here about which plane is their phone on, records will be broken, and things will be back to normal. Why didn't people scream this during the 3GS upgrade?

I'm probably not going to get one as I will give the Galaxy II a shot or just stay on the 4 for now, but to say this is where their fall starts is just ridiculous.

I love how you people who are talking about switching to an android phone can do nothing but quote specs. Dual Core this, quad core that, OMG 4.5" SCREEN I CAN WATCH MOVIES!!

Why would I want to watch movies on my phone when I have a tablet? I use my phone to...wait for it...to make phone calls and check things quicky as well as text. I dont want to stream netflix, or use it to read a book. I want something that fits in my pocket comfortably, is fast enough to get what I need of the net, and can play a couple of simple games. Dont need a super computer in my pocket. Its like who has the larger epeen on the net or something.

Siri is also going to change the game, I drive alot of work and with the new anti texting laws while driving, this is a HUGE advantage. Now I can do everything with just my voice and not worry about being pulled over by the cops.

See heres the thing...if you noticed you talked about what "you" have or what "you" want and dont want. Everyone is different and want different things for their device. Does it look like the iphone 4s is a great device? Sure. Is it worth an upgrade? For me, nope. My problem is I get very bored quickly and like to always get something new. And that's where I am. I'm bored of the iphone. Cant blame the phone I would be bored of any phone I have had more then a year. That's just me.
I'm sure a lot of people will purchase the new iphone if that's what they want and then they should.

Explain this, why if someone says they wanted more so are going to try Android...why do some of you act like your being personally insulted? If someone wants to go to Android, let em. Iphone is not the only phone out there. And if this is it for the iphone for another year, there will be many more options from other markets to look at until then. I know some of you feel the iphone is the best but others may not agree. And that argument with its the number one selling phone blah blah blah doesn't cut it.
I may be switching over to Android so I can see whats on the other side. Sure there are trade offs...would be the same going from Android to iphone.

Is that really a surprise? It is the 4S after all. It is an upgraded 4. Wouldn't it be reasonable to assume that some of it's features would run on an iPhone 4? If we were talking about the iPhone 5 here then you would maybe have a point.

Apple has built a reputation of rolling out high quality, leading-edge products at certain/anticipated time intervals. Many were disappointed when the iPhone 5 didn't arrive in June. Now it seems that Apple has taken the easy way out (after a 16 month wait) and instead of delivering another blockbuster product, which we have come to expect from Apple, it rolls out what appears to be a retread. I think this will hurt Apple severely. There may be an initial rush by some to buy this new toy, but the form factor is too similar to the iPhone 4 and, thus, will be perceived as old technology.

That being said, I have yet to own a smartphone because I don't need all the latest technology. I was planning on buying the iPhone 4s which was rumored as a cheaper version of the iPhone 5 but, here again, there is disappointment because the iPhone 4s has basically the same pricing structure as the iPhone 4.

As a huge Apple fan I'm quite annoyed. Time will tell but I think Apple really screwed this up.

And I'm dying to hear what exactly they "blew". If they blew "it", that would indicate some sort of failure, business wise. They will sell millions upon millions of 4S phones...not sure how that's a failure of any kind.

Exactly.

Where does this spell doom or failure for anyone?

If they are only about money then why did they make our nerd dreams come true very intensely these past years?

IF they don't care, then why did the always act like they did and showed it.

Now this time they didn't yes, but there was a pattern there of unspoken customer trust that was broken.
