Wirelessly posted (iPhone 4: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

All this talk about specs and screen size... iPhone 4S is going after regular folks, not tech ppl like most of us on this forum. General population doesn't give a rip about processors and ram. Proof? Look at how strong sales were for iPhone 4 earlier this year thru this summer. Most people didn't care about how old it was or that a new one was coming. Word is getting out as more people buy iPhone about their reliability and customer service in apple stores etc. UNMATCHED by any other company. Try to have you Samsung phone fixed as easily as an iPhone.
So regardless of how badly apple "blew" it with iPhone 4S, it will be the best selling iPhone because the general population is getting more into apple. Their focus was on making a faster phone with the HUGE advantage of Siri and getting it out on more carriers. Plus 3GS was still selling better than most 4" screen Androids on ATT a few months ago.
This just goes to prove how brilliant Apple are. They read the market and focused on the BIGGEST gains. For that, they are the best.

Couldn't be farther from the truth. Even as awesome as the iPhone 4 was when launched, and the records it's shattered as far as sales, Android marketshare was unphased and continued to grow at a nice pace. The 4S is definitely not going to change that trend, at all. Galaxy SII sales are incredible and Samsung is actually on pace to overtake Apple as the worlds #1 smartphone vendor soon. As a matter of fact the iPhone 4S will hurt RIM more than anyone.

There is more than enough room for both Android and iOS to exist. I don't see that changing anytime in the near future.

I agree with you 100%... However, the iPhone 3GS at $0 will either slow them down ALOT or take a little bit of their market share back. ;)

I totally agree with this...

I think the update was good...I think the presentation of the update was not as good.

I think the key to Steve's RDF was that when you watched him it looked like he genuinely loved whatever he was presenting and that if he wasn't the head of the company he'd wait in line to get it.

When Steve presented he didn't look like he was the CEO of the company - yesterday - it looked like 3 VP's and a CEO introduced their products.

In their defense, they apparently knew that Steve Jobs was dying at that point. With that being said, I think the presentation was horrible but I am giving them another chance before I really judge them.

For Apple a much needed boost by offering the 3gs free, For the consumer a larger screen would have been the answer. Overlooked by Apple but not the consumer.

People here have too many insecurities. There is nothing wrong in owning inferior phone (except for overpaying).

Bigger screen would have pushed me over the edge to upgrade, since the screen is the same I'll just stick with my IP4. iOS and iOS apps are still leaps and bounds better than any Andriod build i've played with, and thats much more important than an extra 0.5" of display area.

To me, it's not worth upgrading anytime soon.

I'll be sticking to my iPhone 4 at least for the next couple of years. Perhaps I'll upgrade to the iPhone 5-S or even better, iPhone 6.

200,000 in 12 hours. Yep, they sure blew it. Just like Nelson Cruz blew it when he hit a homer tonight.

There will never be an iPhone with a bigger screen than what it is now. People who are expecting an iPhone with 4+" screen can keep moaning and crying every year. But Apple's design decision has been made, and it's not going to change.

This who love Hummer sized phones with 4.5" screens (and the battery that dies by lunchtime) - there are plenty of options for you in Android land.

There was time when Apple thought that PowerPC was the best CPU. Then they changed their mind (after falling too far from PCs).

You can never say never in the tech world as things change so fast. Besides, Apple is under new management these days.

And there was a time when Apple thought Firewire was super duper awesome. Then after 3 generations of iPods with ONLY Firewire, they turned to iPods with ONLY USB. :D

iphone 4s is for 3g and 3gs users

I think the 4s is designed for those who didn't get revolutionary ip 4 in last year, especially the iPhone 3g and 3gs users like me. I can't wait to upgrade my iPhone. :p

Sure I can say it, I just did it. Technology changes fast, but some things stay constant. Apple determined that 3.5" inch screen was an optimal screen size for a mobile phone, providing the best possible experience for one hand operation and thumb control. That part isn't going to change, unless average human hand evolves to a different size.

Bookmark this thread and check back again in 5 years - the iPhone screen size will remain the same. If you think Apple is going to suddenly start making Hummer-sized iPhones - you just don't get how Apple operates.

Apple just didn't have the time and supply chain to get a new screen and phone in place by launch time. It had nothing to do with them determining that 3.5 is the best size. The IP 5 will have a bigger screen.

This is a joke right? 4" screens are dime a dozen, there are dozens of Android phones with 4-4.5" screens. There is nothing magical about 4" screen, if anything 3.5" retina display is MORE difficult to manufacture than a 4" screen, due to higher pixel density.

Once again, if you think IP5 will have a larger screen you will be sorely disappointed. If a huge screen on a mobile phone is important to you, you may as well get Droid Prime or some other similar monstrosity.

Totally agree.

The iPhone5 will look like all those mockups with a 4" screen and release next Summer/Fall.

The 4S is a money grab to save up and hold to weather tough rimes ahead after the loss of Steve Jobs. Without Jobs at the helm I can see the iPhone6 or 7 finally be the device not to wow everyone and will hurt sales.

You're ridiculous if you believe the iPhone 4s was only released to weather the loss of Steve Jobs. The iPhone 4s was well under way before he left and has nothing to do with his passing. I will admit though, it's a money grab and it worked.

Why is 200,000 or one million such a great number for pre-orders?

I imagine that most of these pre-orders are cell phone carriers requesting stock for their stores.

Divide that number by... 10 and you have 100,000 phones per country.

Assume that the USA is half of those and you get 10,000 phones per state.

Divide that by 3 carriers and you have 3,333 phones per state for Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint.

Divide that by 30 carrier stores per state and you have roughly 100 phones per store.

That many phones means that carriers won't have to order new stock over the holidays.

What does this all mean? That pre-orders don't mean much and that it is too early to tell anything.

Sony kept talking about how there was a shortage of PS3's even though they were purposely limiting production to generate hype before the holidays.

Please. Internal teams are working on units 18-24+ months down the product roadmap.
The 4S has been design locked for 8 months, if not longer.
Do you have any concept of mass produced products, engineering & design cycles? I do.

The Company's iPhone release history shows a clear pattern of every other release being more evolution, than revolution. New formfactor will be in 2012.

Apple made no false promises, it was just rampant pre-announcement wild @ss speculation.

Why is 200,000 or one million such a great number for pre-orders?

It is a big deal since it eclipses the iPhone 4 preorders by 400,000 units.

Man, give it up! A million units of anything is a HUGE deal! Ask HP and Motorola!!!! This has exceeded all previous iPhone records. So what, all of a sudden the orders are going to dry up after the first week?

What color is the sky in your planet? :D

You mean all the Verizon store managers sit on their chairs at 3AM, trying to order iPhones to stock up their stores? That's just about the craziest story I've heard. ;) Retailers like that get their phones through other channels, not online presale which is meant for the consumers.
