No, it wouldn't be funny. It would be another chunk out of Apple and the Enterprise business - which they aren't doing particularly well in, IMO.

FYI, Photoshop and Illustrator aren't really part of the "Enterprise business."

What I'm curious is...

Is there anything that requires developers to move to the iPOS (ah, what a great abbreviation for "iPhone OS") 4 SDK? Can they just stay on the iPOS 3 SDK, which doesn't have that provision?

AKA: Can't Adobe just release it with the caveat that you have to use version 3? After all, Version 3 apps will run just fine on Version 4 devices, one would assume...

When your customer base moves to 4.0 you need to upgrade your tools to build for 4.0. Also, right now to do any changes in iTunes Connect you must accept the new agreement. Once you do, if you submit something to apple they will 120% reject it.

Why would Apple buy Adobe just to rewrite all of their software? They can write their own versions from scratch and it would surely be a lot cheaper then purchasing Adobe.

Well Apple would kill two birds with one stone?

First Apple eliminates the flash issue by killing flash.
Second Apple would own the rights to Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Acrobat, etc. So when Apple releases OSX and iphone OS versions for their products there is no competition.

In addition Apple picks up a lot of programming talent from Adobe.

Finally Apple has more than enough free cash to buy Adobe many times over.

Flash is Flash. It would still be activated in an app. The main problem remains. Flash simply uses too much memory and too much battery! If you have not gotten it yet (it seems like it)... it is the two main reasons why Apple dislike Flash.

Some say it´s about competition. Maybe so, but the memory and battery issues are real! iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad would not be much worth with Flash all over the place.

I like my iPhone to be snappy! Deal with it...

You dont seem to understand what the flash to iphone OS compiler does...

The apps would not be Flash, they would be translated into Cocoa touch and be just as "snappy" as other apps that you already have. - There are a lot of VERY talented Flash developers that could bring some great apps to the iphone and ipad with this tool.

Honestly, if I were Apple - I wouldn't want hundreds (but most likely thousands) of really crappy Flash-converted applications as well.

I understand that they want to tap their Flash developers into this mobile gaming market. Sadly, throwing a load of chopped together apps against all the high-quality native code apps would just prove to be a waste of time.

If the Flash developers wanted to tap into Apple's devoted developer's market - they should learn Objective-C.

Great idea! "Let's kill 40% (or whatever the number is) of our business and stick it to Jobs. Yeah, we'll show him!"

That move would surely make Narayen CEO of the year. He should totally do it.

Okay. So... I'm going to take a small step back here and take a look at what you just said.

Hmm. So Boot Camp for Mac, fine. A Hackintosh company gets sued to the planet Pluto.

Microsoft Office for Mac, fine and dandy. You welcome it. But Adobe dropping support for only 10% of the market that use Mac is foollish.

Man, you must have some rose-coloured glasses! lol Either that, or can I have som of that stuff you're smoking?

Sounds like typical apple arrogance to me. They are very good at burning bridges. It is great when they are on top but when they lose that top spot it comes back to bite them because no one will be willing to work with them.

Bill's a mean man at time and has his share of sins. It's too bad Steve gets a free pass... at least here and other Apple forums..

Jobs gets a free pass here? Seriously? As a freshly-joined troll, you obviously haven't read this forum enough to know what Steve really gets around here...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

frustrating for users who want flash, but it's not hard to understand the thinking if apple is serious about promoting html5 and/or killing flash.

Looks like you're ignorant of the situation. This has nothing to do with browser-based flash support. It is about denying developers the chance to export their Flash timelines into Apps for submission into the App Store.

There's quasi-wise things:

Not putting in a camera in the iPod Touch so it doesn't cannibalize iPhone sales.

Then there's just the idiotic things:

No FM tuner, seriously, Steve?

How long did it take copy-and-paste? How long will it take to get a flash for the iPhone camera?

Apple befuddles me and amuses me at times w/ their decisions. Heck, you're only NOW getting a unified inbox. When the iPhone and iPod will get OLED screens like the Zune HD (yes, Zune sux), I don't know. Like I said... bizarre decisions.

It's really only befuddling if you think you can do anything by throwing money at it. In reality, Apple has limited development resources. They don't have some guy sitting around a couple of years doing nothing before being put to work coding the first implementation of cut and paste that pops into his head.

So? Sony took away Linux support for the PS3 so people would stop ripping BluRay to disc. Microsoft doesnt provide an HDD in the arcade 360 so it doesnt cannablise Premium and Elite sales. Miscrosoft sells several versions of essentially the same OS.

No FM tuner, seriously, Steve?
Who buys an iPhone/iPod to listen to FM radio? If I wanted to do that I woldve bought a $20 pocket tuner.

Scratch that, who even listens to Radio anymore using a PMP device anymore?

How long did it take copy-and-paste? How long will it take to get a flash for the iPhone camera?

Hey, at least I can actually use copy and paste easily. Android's system is klunky and makes it difficult. On MS phones, I had to go on the MS website to figure out how to C/P it was so poorly implemented.

Apple befuddles me and amuses me at times w/ their decisions. Heck, you're only NOW getting a unified inbox. When the iPhone and iPod will get OLED screens like the Zune HD (yes, Zune sux), I don't know. Like I said... bizarre decisions.

You discombobulate me at your abirtary attacks on Apple. Why doesnt Microsoft have a BluRay drive in the Xbox 360 already? Why did sony block linux? Blah Blah Blah...

But Adobe dropping support for only 10% of the market that use Mac is foollish.

Newsflash: the Mac is far more than 10% of Adobe's customer base.

Man, you must have some rose-coloured glasses! lol Either that, or can I have som of that stuff you're smoking?

It's called rational thinking. You should totally light some up sometime.

Why doesn't Apple just buy Adobe, kill flash, and re-write CS5 or 6 so that it becomes a killer mac app for future desktop and touch systems?

Hmm, Apple engages Adobe in a nasty public battle. Adobe, clearly more dependent on Apple than Apple is on Adobe, sees its stock drop as investors panic. Apple seizes the moment and buys Adobe for a bargain price.

An interesting theory. And a ruthless business move that would make Microsoft proud...

Me, I miss Macromedia.

Never forget that Steve is an astoundingly arrogant bastard--he never just thinks he is right, he knowns that he is right. He is also an extraordinarily intelligent and lucky man with an uncanny business sense, because more often than not, he actually has been right.

2 years ago I might've been pissed about this.

But today, no. Apple have been strong against flash and they need to keep this up. It needs to be killed, and as the most successful smartphone company, Apple have the power to do it.

Although I can appreciate the concerns when this sort of thing happens with things that Apple are wrong about... Fortunately they are 100% correct that flash sucks though. :D

I know a lot of people who listen to the radio still. Hell I listen to it all the time when I drive and wish my iPod had it in it so I could listen to it when I leave my car.

Now the station I listen to most of the is NPR. No iPod device can keep up with news or stories from NPR. Also the radio allows one to hear new music at a much quicker pace as it places new music.

It would be funny if Adobe just pulled all Mac apps, going PC only. Would designers switch? Doubt it, they would just live with CS4 until someone else comes out with something to replace it.

Several years ago - before the Mac's market share started ramping up - I read an interview with one of the higher mucky-mucks at Adobe (IIRC it was prior to their takeover of Macromedia). He said at that time Adobe's profits from their "pro" apps on the Mac side and on the PC side were surprisingly close.

It's true a typical business is largely Windows-centric - but those aren't the ones buying Dreamweaver, Photoshop, etc., they're mostly running Microsoft Office and not much else (except perhaps Acrobat). The design houses, ad agencies, and other creative businesses are largely Mac shops. At least based on the small sample of people I know in these fields, if Adobe dropped Mac support they'd probably just sit tight. They seem more loyal to Apple than to Adobe (heck, most of them don't seem particularly fond of the company even though they're currently reliant on their software).
