Its apple. Not the product quality. Honestly they could have announced a new iphone and gave nothing but rumours (possibly a few pictures and said things like "twice the speed" and it would still sell extremely well).

Many people, never having touched the phone or read reviews about it would still buy the phone. Not because of how good it inherently is but because ITS MADE BY APPLE AND THATS MAGICAL!!

The hype over this product is unbelievable. Its not a solution to global hunger or clean energy. Its a PHONE.

I don't have a problem buying a product because its a good product. I have a problem with people buying a product for the sake of it being a product. How many will buy the iphone 5 simply because it is a new iphone and not because they will actually need it (and then its compared to Samsung who's phone are bought on a much larger basis because its the best tool for the job). What im trying to say is that these numbers do not definitively prove that the iphone 5 is the best phone on the planet. If people choose product A over product B simply because it is labeled "A" that does not necessarily better than B.

And I love apple's marketing BS. twice the speed is true. But the 4S uses a 800 MHZ processor. Considering any high end phone uses a 1.5 GHZ dual core (on a newer architecture). Anything less than half the speed would be disappointing.

There still hasn't been a full hands on review and people are still buying the things.

So you're one of these people, huh? "considering any high end phone uses a 1.5 GHz dual core. Anything less than half the speed would be disappointing."

I didn't order the iPhone 5 because I have to wait for the unlocked versions to sell. However, you realize that the specs aren't the only thing involved, right? The iPhone 4s feels less "bloated" than any android phone I've used recently. Before you say it, yes - I have tried out android but it isn't for me. iOS is just easy to use and works far better on an iPhone with lower specs than does android on a phone with higher specs. :p

As for WHY I would order the phone without trying it first... I know the phone will be good. It is similar enough to the iPhone 4s that I know there won't be any crazy surprises but also - if I don't like it I can return it.

"Many people, never having touched the phone or read reviews about it would still buy the phone. Not because of how good it inherently is but because ITS MADE BY APPLE AND THATS MAGICAL!!". My wife and I bought a home from a builder that is considered the best builder in the south east. We only looked at blue prints, never stepped foot in the house and paid 100's of thousands of dollars for it. I guess that it is because we are ignorant followers, huh?

ITS MADE BY APPLE AND THATS MAGICAL!!

You nailed it right there, I think you actually starting to get it. YES Apple makes it so it is "Magical".

Just like the Android guys think HTC/Samsung are "Magical" too.. I guess we have to love what you love or we are all iSheep. Go and see if your android devices have light leakage, covers that squeak, batteries that last 4 hours, batteries that over heat all things that a kernel chief can't fix. Sit back and wait to see if you get JB maybe/maybe not. Maybe you can get one of these 16 year old kids who instead of going out hunting for girls and drinking beers is sitting at home compiling Google source because the manufactures wont.

You know why android is so popular? Because its FREE. People are CHEAP. More money in the manufactures pocket because they don't have to pay for the OS.

It's pretty funny, actually. In one moment, they're complaining about Apple being nothing but a marketing machine, and in the next, they're complaining about Apple users marketing on Apple's behalf.

If Apple just had clever marketing, and that's all they had going for them, wouldn't those Apple users be the first to complain about Apple products being bad and how they were suckered? But that doesn't happen. Apple users are genuinely happy with what they bought, and want to share their good experiences with others.

Clearly there's more going on here than the narrow-minded view of the Apple haters. Too bad they're so narrow-minded, this post will go way over their heads.

Didn't you know? Apple's initial supply is always low to fool all the sheep into thinking it's selling.

What's REAL tiresome is people like you pretending to know what marketing means.

http://allthingsd.com/20120911/how-many-iphone-5s-can-apple-sell-in-a-weekend/

The iPhone 3GS sold more than one million units during its first weekend at market. The iPhone 4 sold more than 1.7 million. And the iPhone 4S sold more than double that.

“Assuming supply chain constraints aren’t a major issue and the seven country rollout ensues, we believe at least 5 million to 5.5 million iPhone 5’s can be sold in [the first three days].”

Selling over a million in the first weekend is an insane amount to keep up with demand, let alone more. It is a one year upgrade cycle. How soon would they need to start making the phones to keep up with the launch demand? And what would the consumers miss out on if they start manufacturing them too early.

We demand the latest and greatest....not last years tech. Don't see how it would be good business sense to hold back units built. You want money in your pocket, not in the consumers pocket who might decide to buy something else with that money.

By "Blown Away" i assume they mean they are amazed they had anyone bother to upgrade from a 4S at all.

Had this been the iPhone 4 a few years back, i might still have an iPhone, as it is, ill be upgrading my Galaxy S2 to a Galaxy S3 i guess (Or i might even go for the Samsung Note 2 and do away with the need to carry a Phone and a Tablet around, ditching my iPad)

I feel as though the "innovation" the iPhone brought to a stale phone market has gone, the android phones now, with ICS and Jelly Bean OS feel fresher, and give more choice, i dont like the tiny size of the 4, 4s and 5, the 3gs curve fitted in my hand nicely, which made a tiny phone more comfortable to use, the slightly bigger Galaxy S2 is supurb, but still a bit to thin, but the S3 ive held so far, its the perfect size for a phone, unless you have tiny hands, but , i guess apple knows its products are aimed at the teeny-boppers now, real people who want value for money, and who earn the money through hard work, want a product thats good value, and the apple tax doesn't cut it now android phones give so much alternate choice. I dont NEED an iphone to play my iTunes music purchases, i just load them into winamp..and the app stores are almost identical in content for what i want on my phone (i dont game)

Had apple released the iPhone 5 at a sensible price (i.e a price to carriers that allowed them to offer it almost free on contract, like the android device makers) i might have been more inclined to look at it, but im not signing up for a 24 month contract AND have to buy the phone.

After 4434 Rogers customers get their phones I will be next in line.

Have you used the Rogers reservation system before ? I have. Let me tell you this : You won't get your phone on launch day. All the walk-in customers will get a device before you and you'll have to wait a few days to get yours.

I had reserved my 4S through the Rogers reservation system last year. Walked into my pick up location on launch day only to learn they had gotten no reservations in at all. Since no one was there though and they had plenty of stock, I picked a handset as a "walk-in" customer and cancelled my reservation eventually (after much arguing over the phone with customer service).

Rogers' redboard was basically a big flame war for 2 weeks between Rogers personnel and enraged customers. It's become accepted that their reservation system is a big pile of...

My suggestion, don't wait, just pick a location near you and go there. If it's anything like last year, there will be no line-up and plenty of stock.

Apple users will love you just as much as Android users :)

I love the whole "sheep" argument, you can choose between the two most popular phone OS's, both have millions of "sheep" and have fallen in some way for the advertising. Nobody here bought a phone because they knew absolutely nothing about it. But somehow the choice of gadget has become the only battleground and proof of manhood for gadget nerds because actual physical contact would be way too scary.

youTube comments and tech forums are full of arguments why something is better when it is a personal choice. Other people don't get to vote what phone I buy or decide why, personal choice is not a democracy. Besides democracies are overrated anyway :)

Ok.. better go, starting to rant. And yes I just ordered the iPhone 5 for absolutely no reason. Would like to try a Lumia 920 but then what? My parking, voice mail and a bunch of other stuff is working fine on my iPhone 4, the only thing a lumia 920 can do is do it pretty much the same or a little bit better and a lot worse.

Went down like this:

I'd been making ROMs for android devices for quite sometime and was running a Motorola Xoom. I was waiting and waiting for an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwitch when the iPad 3 came out. It just looked awesome so I went and got one. It was love at first sight. For the most part it was the build quality, weight and thickness of the device that sold me. As I started using it more and more I was shocked at how much nicer the apps were compared to android apps, they are much more mature.

After that I had to have a MacBook/iMac. Then I felt the wife needed a MacBook Air. I wanted Apple TV you can see were this is going. Other than the onslaught of teenage android BS because android users are immature I've loved all of it. Once you use a Mac it's hard to go back to cheap plastic computers.

So I'm leaving a lot of my android friends behind, it's gonna be a whole new life for me on the iPhone. I will be spending a lot less time developing on android and more time on something more useful. It's really the developers that make android work. I'm sure like me over time they too will get tired of carrying Google on their backs..

I live in the UK. Vodafone and O2 will never be able to use the existing iphone 5 4G because the allocated frequency they have isnt used on the UK Model. That means unless I am on Orange or TMobile - which I am not, then no 4G for me til they update the model next year to allow for it. A new 32gb iPhone 5 is £600. My iPhone 4 is worth about £200 after fees. So I have to work out. Is it really worth £400 to get a slightly bigger screen, a non compatible dock connector, faster performance ... Which I probably won't notice much, a similar looking design and 4G that won't work til next year when I will have to resell it and buy the same thing-the iPhone 5S. That's a lot of cash for a bit of 'street credit' or would I be better putting that £400 towards a iPad and keep the 4.0 and use the Panorma feature for nowt when IOS 6.0 is here. Yeah. That's what I'll do.
Problem is. It s so easy to get swept away wi the hype. And we all know that if Apple issued a iPhone 5.25 that had rubber sides and different coloured home button...half the readers on here would rush out and buy it cos it's new innit? And it's Apple. So it must be good. You know that feeling...you want to buy something. But a little voice in your head says "Why?". Why spend a lot of money for a product that's obsolete on purchase? (In the UK at least-only two operators will be able to offer faster speeds) What a shame. I evne considered a 4S til ii realsied they only do the 16GB and its not that much cheaper oh dear oh dear Let's hope they get the other product lines organised a bit better eh?

Apple is stockpiling new iPhones for months now, that's why the rumors couldn't be stopped. They stockpiled 4 million iPhone 4's with the introduction, 8 million iPhone 4s's and now 12 million??

That would mean that Foxcon is already producing iPhones for 3 months, sounds like just about right.

WTF are Android Followers doing on this site?

Some one help me with this. I visit this site and its forums periodically because I am generally an Apple supporter. I have never, and probably never will, be wasting my time reading and posting on Android sites. If I decide to switch to the Android system then I will switch. So anyway the question is.

WTF are Android die-hards doing wasting their time posting/reading on MacRumors Forums? I mean I just dont get it? Just trolls that have nothing better to do in their lives but rant and yell at Mac users I guess. Just what I would expect tbh to be bred by the Android ecosystem.

Funny

All this talk about apple and selling products....My wife works for one of the largest marketing firms in the world. They track stuff daily and how the market reacts. She tells me all the time how Apple will not allow full disclosure of there sale data on any product...This my friends is a known fact in her industry. Apple is never forthcoming with this information to the private sector let alone to the public. Its well guarded.

Having said that Apple does a great job of marketing every product they release. Everyone knows (lying if they state otherwise) If Apple made Ipoop people would buy it. Apple counts on this loyal fan base so to sell out on the release date of the Iphone5 was a no brainer for Apple. Plain and simple they knew it would.

Just consider the new Lighting charger....Apple knows millions upon millions already have/use billions of chargers. Charges at work, home, car, boat and the list goes on. Sure Apple states a new lighting adaptor was inevitable given size and faster data transfer, but in reality its $$$$. Apple knows many will grumble and mumble about purchasing adaptors, but at the end of the day they got you. Its all about the $$$$$$$ as you already know. They know people will buy it if they release it.

I´m not surprised by the extreme popularity of the phone. I´m gonna buy myself one, even though I have a 4S. And the reason is that I´m so sick of waiting for a new iMac that I need something just so that I have some new tech to fiddle with while I wait....not that I really need one. Guessing this is the reason for 90% of the sale, people are waiting for the iMac and need something to play with meanwhile ;)

Apple could coast on its reputation for a couple of product cycles, but as I've heard a TV pundit say, no matter how well the dog food is advertised, it won't be a successful product if the dog won't eat it.

If Apple truly failed to deliver, it would lose me. It would lose a lot of people. Some other company would take its place.

Your theory doesn't hold water.

You know why android is so popular? Because its FREE.

It's also a good OS that is easily licensable by manufacturers... Windows Phone came too late, iOS is proprietary, and all the other OSes are have baked.

If Apple truly failed to deliver, it would lose me. It would lose a lot of people. Some other company would take its place.

iPhone 5 is a missing - but not a critical one for Apple. Apple could have done so much more with this release to secure the market and silence critics but I guess like you said, they're coasting on their reputation.

I'm sure the iPhone 5 and 6 will sell well even if Apple does not improve the product much more - but like RIM, Nokia, etc, the market will slowly pass Apple by and all of a sudden they'll be in the position of catch up with customers jumping ship.

Even if it's true that "everyone" would buy Ipoop, if Apple made it, I can tell you that I'm not "everyone". You and I are the exceptional ones, and to be honest I have my doubts about you.:D

I buy Apple products because Apple doesn't make "Ipoop".

As for the "Lightning charger", you really haven't thought this through.

According to the Apple Store, here's whats in the box.

  • iPhone 5
  • Apple EarPods with Remote and Mic
  • Lightning to USB Cable
  • USB Power Adapter
  • Documentation

No one really has to buy a "Lightning charger", because everything you need to charge the iPhone is included with it. That's good, because many of the adapters are already back-ordered or won't be available for a month or so. And the high sales volume of the iPhone 5 pretty much ensures that the market will soon be flooded with less expensive cables and adapters.

I agree that they make a ton of stuff, but here are my two gripes: (1) out of all of their phones, the ones that made the most name for themselves were 'inspired' from Apple and iOS. You must have seen that in the recently ended court case; and (2) their products don't breathe quality. You cannot take a plastic Samsung phone in your hand and compare it to a 'carefully built Leica camera' or 'finely crafted watch', as it is done with the iPhone.

I've also seen judges disagree in every other country in the world. A win in the US on seven software patents doesn't mean that suddenly Samsung is a complete and utter copy. Read that sentence carefully and digest it.

And it was their salesmen who said "Leica camera" I would add.

Let's wait until we have the sales figures and customer satisfaction surveys for actual iPhone 5 users before we have this discussion. I heard the same sorts of predictions for the last three models, and those predictions turned out to be wrong.

You may have some unique insight, but you're a stranger to me, so your criticism gets lumped in with the naysayers who have a very poor track-record so far.

The first page of this is embarrassing to read. I am kind of hoping people are not being serious!!

I have an iPhone 4, i don't see what the iPhone 5 offers for me to be worth an upgrade. iPhone 4 does exactly what i need, i'm not paying a bomb for improvements! Ridiculous some of these fan boys. I love apple myself but to think there's people out there who love them x10000 of me is a bit sad. iPhone 5 isn't special. What's wrong with the competition? There are a lot of solid quality competitors now, nothing to make fun of at all...

You are too concentrated on the phone looks rather than function. You must be an ideal customer for Apple. It's actually quite easy to see a few things that the phone is lacking. NFC is one such obvious thing. Not being able to use LTE data simultaneously with voice is a major let down. Screen resolution is decent but still lower than that of the competitors. Wireless charging would also be nice as would be the use of a standard connector (micro USB/MHL).

The internet speed is ten times as fast as the last version.

The CPU is twice as fast.

The GPU is twice as fast.

The screen's color representation is significantly better.

The camera is better on multiple fronts -- very slick panorama, shutter speed, sapphire cover, better lens system.

The whole darn thing is way less prone to breaking due to the new construction.

The Lightning port, I think, is going to evolve into something quite useful, and it appears to be way better functionally than the 10-year-old Dock Connector.

The speaker and microphone system looks to be much better.

It's thinner. It's lighter.

It has a larger screen.

Based on all of the above, I'm pretty sure in addition to looking SEXY AS HECK, it's going to be a very, very big improvement in terms of overall functionality.

Yes! You carry that phone tablet around! You carry it! Carry it proud! Look cool! bahahaha
