Yes a bit too convenient that the wording basically mimics what all these financial analysts and tech pundits have been saying. Certainly wouldn't be difficult for someone in the analyst community to start a rumor like this. Lets not forget the rumors earlier this year that Tim Cook's job was allegedly on the line.

But I've no doubt most of the post here will be Apple can't innovate, Apple is doomed, Cook needs to be fired, etc.

Oh definitely. Reminds me of the appleinsider article a few months back that showed how the press had 5 million iPhones in the launch weekend as disappointing, but 10 million Galaxy S3's in a month as incredible. The press just likes to hate the big guys and love the underdogs.

Because of course we all know what Apple has in its pipeline. Just like we all knew about the new MacPro.

Umm we did, Tim Cook said a new Mac pro was coming, early last year. That it turned into a compact/mini PC was the surprise.

My take is this. Apple cares more about making money these days, they have forgotten about making great products. They still make good products, the best in fact but at the moment they are not 'great'. Take the Apple TV for instance a good product but has had no serious software development for what 3-4 years ? It has the power to have apps and much more, look at what you can do with an Apple TV that is jailbroken. They have missed the opportunity to make a good product great. Why do we have airs, retina MBPs and MBP's ? A single product would allow for more innovation, you can't be 'laser focused' on everything. So why haven't they killed the MBPs ? Are they scared to lose the revenue ? IMHO Tim should go, I don't really think he has had enough time, but business is business and he's not taking the decisions that need to be taken.

You are basically saying Steve Jobs should go too if he's still alive.

The concern is not about innovation, it is about Apple's slow pace of releasing new products that allows it s competitors to take over market share much quicker.

Google, e.g., Google Glass; Microsoft, e.g. Surface Pro; and Samsung and Nokia insofar as they were first to introduce features that haven't been seen on other smartphones, eg NFC, IR Blaster, 41 MP Camera, f1.8 camera.

The only thing I see in that list that could possibly have a wide standing impact, is the Google Glass, even then its still such a niche product and only 'for the nerds/geeks'. NFC/IR blasters both seem unnecessary if I'm being honest....If Apples acquisitions in fingerprint sensory software/hardware companies are to be believed, there is gonna be some exciting stuff going on there

Does a 41MP camera actually end up taking better pics than any standard 8-10MP camera on a phone? Bearing in mind the sensor size and the way the diamonds in the lens have been cut?

As far as I can see, none of those products are gonna be particularly revolutionary, game changing, or make the kind of impact that iPod/iPhone/iPad have made. (each of those 3 products have subsequently turned their respective industries on their head, so much so in fact that people have copied/emulated them, to no particular avail!

I think sommat is coming, soonish. in the next 2-3 years. Which will change the game again, particularly insofar as cars, automation of and communications within goes. Look at the clues in the new iOS 7-iOS in the Car.

Before the iPod came out everyone was using CD players on belt holders, with 10-20 CDs in. I then went n got myself a 1Gb USB MP3 player by Creative... and bit by bit have ended up with more Apple gear.

I think there is sommat to be said about the Apple Ecosystem, this might well be the time where they decide to concentrate on software and the communications/links between the different products they have...

yeah they were. Hence Steve got back into Apple, cometh the Ipod, the rest it history!!!

I didn't mean before Steve came back. I meant when Steve was CEO. It was 6 years between iPod and iPhone and another 3 before the iPad. Was the board concerned with that pace of innovation?

I'll be the first to admit that I am an unapologetic Apple fanboy, but as a businessperson (and Apple fan), this is concerning. This guy is a strong financial reporter and his source is indeed real (spend ten minutes on Google and you'll figure it out).

The board knows what's in the pipeline for the next 18+ months. If they aren't excited about it, that's a real problem for investors and consumers alike.

I'm not saying this is going to happen, but I've always had a fear that Apple would repeat past mistakes and essentially create a market (iPod/iPhone/iPad) only to see them consumed by (in my opinion) inferior copy-cat products.

The problem is that even I must admit that the copy-cat products are getting pretty damn good. I personally really want a larger phone, but am locked into the Apple ecosystem by choice. I'll have a decision to make in the next year or so if Apple chooses not to present an option that suits my desires. Every consumer is in the same boat, regardless of what side of the aisle (Apple sucks vs. Apple is perfect) you're on.

It's kinna hard to innovate when everyone is just waiting to sue ya for whatever idea you add. It would be great if these manufacturers would all get together and do a little give and take without trying to keep clogging up the courts over anything the other one does.

Asking Tim Cook to innovate is like asking Steve Jobs to run Worldwide Operations.
Asking Tim Cook to innovate is like asking Dexter to not suck this final season.
Asking Tim Cook to innovate is like asking Breaking Bad to suck this final season.
Asking Tim Cook to innovate is like asking Twitter for 141 characters.
Asking Tim Cook to innovate is like asking Jony Ive to change the newsstand icon.
Asking Tim Cook to innovate is like asking OS X installation screen to print the correct estimated amount of time left.
Asking Tim Cook to innovate is like asking for Ocean's 14.
Asking Tim Cook to innovate is like asking that dude that's texting while crossing the street to walk faster.

Shut up!!!! lol

If Apple weren't busy buying their own shares I would say they had 'leaked' this for a laugh before they release their next big innovation. But since that would affect the share price, I think this whole headline is just bollocks to sell newspapers.

We knew something was coming but we has no idea what. I guarantee you next to no one expected what they saw at WWDC.

Those are all examples of evolutionary features and products, high quality to be sure, but not disruption, just like iPod, iPhone and iPad are evolutionary, but also disruptive because of Apple's patient to detail, and its ecosystem.

If this reaction from the board is true, and I have doubts, it isn't with regard to existing product lines. It is a reaction to perceived lack of a disruptive "next big thing" 3 to 5 years out.

Lightning in a bottle.

That's six revolutions right there!!!! The tech world is so exciting, can't wait for the next revolution!!!

I take all of this with a huge dose of salt. Nothing about this report rings true. When was the last time you heard Apple's board leaking information? Not to mention stuff as potentially damaging as this (if it were true).

Apple have a lot up their sleeve, and we'll see the first fruits of those in around four week's time ;)

If anything, someone is trying to manipulate the markets to see a drop in the AAPL stock price so they can load up, then watch it rebound this fall...

RTP.

To the armchair CEOs:

A man does not make a team. A team makes a team. And Cook is a great leader for a great team. He doesn't need to be innovative himself, he has great innovators in the team, all he has to do is make sure everything runs like a swiss clock, which he is great at.

And now, Fox News. Seriously? Give me a break.

These "complaints" from dumb media have been popping up almost since the iPad was introduced, which they said was going to be a flop. Bad journalism is what it is.

The concern is not about innovation, it is about Apple's slow pace of releasing new products that allows it s competitors to take over market share much quicker.

exactly. People want a new phone every 6 months. But Apple only change the skin of the phone every 2 years.

The long upgrade cycle might hurt Apple selling hardware, but it actually helps to ecosystem in the long run.

how about Ever heard of Google maps... go back 10 years mate!

WHAT DO YOU MEAN THEY HAVEN'T RELEASED ANYTHING INNOVATIVE IN 10 YEARS!?!?!??! GET THE PITCHFORKS!!!!!!!!!11111SHIFT+1

Oh wait.

As a person who has access to Glass, it isn't all that impressive.

tl;dr - people hold Apple to an astronomical standard whilst praising any other tech company that releases anything on any timeframe.

I think that they ought to forget about trying to make things as think as a piece of paper and actually put in a battery that will hold a charge, or else allow removable batteries as most all other phones do. By getting away from that 'thin' thing, they could actually make a much better product that many people would like even better. It would be especially nice to have some decent speakers in these things.

Two new OS on the way, new ipad and iPhone coming soon and a watch thingy in the works. Oh, and an ultrabook that keeps on going for over 10hours AND a radical new desktop machine that has some brilliant features in it. . What exactly are they concerned about? Seems a bit weird, if I'm honest. Also, if they are so secretive I doubt that they will leak out such a concern out of the blue. Why would thy want to hurt their stocks? Seems like a report to fill space Ina newspaper "so we got this blank 2X2 spot, let's fill it with something"
