Apple Boosting Gold iPhone 5s Production Amid Strong Demand

Also only producing cases in leopard print

Proof, i think, that Apple is now a brand for tasteless "trendies" who are more concerned with the outside than the performance and value for money of the components inside.

i Guess Johnny Ive has the market he was aiming at now, Shallow vapid people who treat products carrying his design as fashion accessories and artwork to be carried about as a status symbol or left on display instead of a usable tool.

The new "sealed" iMac and macbooks, the lack of SD cards for the iPads and iPhones, the new useless Mac Pro, and now a Bling iPhone.

My suspicion is that at this rate the next iPad will be a sheet of laminated paper, the next iPhone a glass pebble and at this rate, the iMac, Macbook and MacPro will be discontinued as Johnny Ives Braclet (Or iWatch as its been know) is released.

My Opinion is someone needs to build hardware people want, then , get Johnny Ive to design a case for it, not have Ive design a case then shoehorn in hardware

All part of the hype machine with Apple
using customers as pawns.

It's getting insulting.

Amazing that samedung and other did not 'see' this coming!

Watch for future 'innovation' in color from the me-too samedung wanabees.

Also, I wonder if those other phone-mee-too-look-at-mee-also will make fun of customers preference for gold phones...

Why the gruff? Why the insult? Why criticize people's preference of colors on a device you're not purchasing for them?

I guess I could ask you the same...why the gruff/insult directed at Samsung? Does your "copy cat" criticism against Samsung also apply to Apple? Other phone manufacturers have been releasing phones in different colors for awhile now, so isn't Apply copying them? Why not throw some of your "gruff" at Apple? Samsung hasn't even announced a gold phone yet and you're already slamming them for doing something that they haven't done yet.

I was 17th in line at an Apple Store in MN early this morning and the ticket for the last gold AT&T phone went to the guy immediately in front of me. Nearly everyone I spoke to was hoping for a gold phone. I think Apple seriously underestimated the initial demand for that color. Silver was just as limited, as I got the last silver AT&T phone.

Only an idiot thinks apple is keeping a color low in supply for marketing purposes. God that's dumb

There wasn't any immediate availability anywhere in the world online for any of the models — any color, any configuration. No one has reported ordering even a space gray and having it ship today. People are getting orders that will ship in 7-10 days or if they're lucky, 1-3 days (but with estimated delivery several days after this).

Do you think that they didn't know a week and a half ago when they had the keynote that supplies would be constrained? They decided to go for a launch this weekend anyway. There will be reports of everyone running out of iPhones and many people will assume that means that it's selling well. And I'm sure it is, but having some models sell out so soon creates the impression even more so.

They could have waited until next week to launch, but they probably wanted to create buzz about the phones being so popular they're making them as fast as they can (Steve Jobs used to say exactly that).

I don't find it hard to believe that they would control the number of each color they were producing to increase hype — the gold one (arguably the most distinctive of the iPhone 5S) is so popular Apple just can't keep up with the demand.

I'm sure the end of the quarter coming up at the end of the month played into it as well, but that can't be it entirely. They like the appearance of things being such a big hit that they have to catch up on production — this has been a recurring theme. Why wouldn't they do this for specific colors as well?

Still think that gold is ****. Wannabe's writen all over it.

Wannabeapersonwithagoldeniphone

It sold quicker than the rest.

Some think they made fewer of them but seeing Apple use it as their "hero" phone (the color they feature in their ads) I don't think so:

Maybe it is harder to manufacture and there are fewer of them, but until I see something the verifies this I don't think it is the case.

Either way: the gold looks good, people like it. What does the color of an item make someone "want to be"? Isn't any iPhone 5s a gadget for a "wannabe"?

I got my gold one but it's 64GB storage-just what I wanted

I had the same thing happen to me. I added the phone (AT&T 32gb gold) to my cart within minutes of the store going live.
I ordered immediately at 3AM using my old iPhone 4 and it went through. Still said 1-3 days after I checked out. I'm sorry you didn't have that luck. I had been worried that I wouldn't even be able to complete the sale because the site would be too swamped but I was able to just do it. I wonder if using the Apple Store app on my iPhone helped make it faster?

It looks like I'll get mine next Friday or a week from Tuesday. No new phone for 3 years so a big upgrade for me.

Yes, the Apple store app really helped you. It is way faster than the website, since the app ONLY load the necessary fields.

3rd in line at ATT store in Butler PA, no 64GB, no gold and no white/silver. Got a 32Gb Space Grey. ATT also doing trade equivalent to Gazelle on the spot.

Yeah, the stock levels really constrained at all points. http://9to5mac.com/2013/09/19/carri...o-gold-or-white-iphone-5s-inventory-tomorrow/

Apple should have told customers Gold online only... cause I waited just to hear no gold iphone. now i have to wait till october. I could have ordered at midnight and got it sooner :(

It depends where you stand in the line at Apple store. For an item which is huge in demand, online order is a best bet while supply is constrained at physical stores. Good luck.

I ordered the gold, too. I think it's more popular because there hasn't been a gold one before and it's....well...pretty.:)

You'd get more $ for your old phone at soldmydevice.com. Gazelle quoted $330 and soldmydevice quoted $360 for 32gb iphone5. Of course, trade on the spot is convenient.

I saw some people over recent days here dare do as much as say the Photos and Game Centre icons in iOS 7 are a bit crap (which they are), mostly met with replies along the lines of "GO TO HELL YOU PIECE OF **** SCUM, JONY I'VE IS A DESIGN GOD!!!". Funny thing is that if those same icons were mentioned on an Android device the laughter and ridicule here would be immense... :)

Wow. What sort of folks do you hang around with?

Is there anything other than buying a certain brand of telephone that binds you guys together? Do you all wear the same brand of clothing?

I heard a rumor that Apple takes the fastest of the A7 processors and puts them in the gold iPhones.

The gold iPhone doesn't have strong demand. It has low supply. Also keep in mind early adopters prefer something weird. If they released a purple rainbow iPhone then it would sell out.

My wife has already said that she wants the gold phone this time around. After passing on the white phones for the previous 2 generations, the gold has her eye.

"Space grey" for me.

But closer to the holidays after the hub bub dies down, and the first several million beta units are in the field.

No, they can't. Apple start production of any launched products 2 to 3 months before the product start shipping. Apple need to order the parts for the new product 6 to 8 months before product launch. And they need to take orders from all the telecom to figure out how many of what unit to build and arrange logistic how how to ship millions of products around the globe including reserve plane to fly the phones to different countries. There are at least 6-7 different version of 5s in China regions (Singapore, China, Hong Kong). And when you add into different version of 5s running in Europe and US, you can start to appreciate the complication of the manufacturing process. And all the logistic companies (e.g. fedex) and retailer has to gear up their promotion and staff vacation schedule to handle the massive workload. All these things need to coordinate in advance. Apple cannot change them without a lot of pain from a lot of the participants down to the retail chain. When you push the newest technology, there is always a problem with yield.
