What Capability OR Feature justifies an increase in production ?

Based-upon what's been reported / rumored, I don't see it !

Under Glass TouchID is, IMO, the ONLY feature that would excite Users, & that doesn't appear to be rumored with the iPhones out in Sept !

No TouchID this year. Maybe at least next year, one model(Pro Max) might get it.

You can have the greatest hardware in the world. If the OS can't keep up ...
Luv my 12PM hardware. The OS on the other hand needs help. From what I am seeing in 15 so far, if the 13PM promises are any indication, the OS is going to need some serious tlc.

While that seems unlikely for Apple, maybe the price will actually be lower than before.

Or they reason that now that the pandemic is looking a bit less dire, people might be more willing to upgrade their old phones (e.g. I'm still on an 8).

I didn't have any malice when I asked the question. I simply couldn't tell if it was an honest question or if the person was offended and rhetorically asked "What is X-mas"

Apple is looking to boost initial production of this year's iPhone 13 models to 90 million units through the end of the year, an increase of up to 20% over the 75 million units of the iPhone 12 series produced last year, according to Bloomberg's Debby Wu and Mark Gurman.

The report also outlines a number of expectations for the iPhone 13 series, most of which have already been rumored:

  • Same four sizes as the current lineup
  • September announcement
  • At least one model with LTPO display to enable variable refresh rate
  • Smaller notch
  • Camera upgrades will focus on video, including improved optical zoom
  • Upgraded chip based on same 6-core design as current A14
No in-display Touch ID, although Apple did test the technology for the iPhone 13
In addressing the smaller notch on the iPhone 13, Bloomberg says that while Apple's goal is to ultimately remove the notch entirely, it looks like even the 2022 iPhone will still include one. It is, however, likely to be reduced further in size compared to the iPhone 13's notch.

I don't know why people get so hung up about 'The Notch'. It wouldn't bother me if needed to be the whole width of the screen. How many people actually notice the notch and get frustrated by it every day? I would guess, not many. There are many more things to address before this minor issue.

In the last quarter Apple reported about 50 billion in iPhone revenue, about 55% of its 90 billion in total revenue. The Wearables, Hearables, Home and accessories sector reported about 8 billion in revenue. If watches are half of that sector, they were 4 billion or roughly about 4.5% of revenue.
The Apple business plan places iPhone at the heart and is the prime device of the Apple eco. As such the IPhone is the astronomically biggest revenue generator by far for not only its massive sales but it’s segue to the eco that also generates very significant billions.
It all starts with users everywhere purchasing an iPhone(and that number of satisfied users is growing, did you know that?).

So your contention is that a single feature enhancement that, ahem, you believe would be popular, so it would logically translate to increased IPhone sales, increasing the eco users which increase watch sales, app sales, hearable sales etc etc — you believe Apple cast all that aside in favor of a deviously sinister plan to increase watch revenue by two or three hundred million in revenue?

On a completely different subject, I got to see the 80s movie Caddyshack last night. I love this line from the movie:

Danny: I planned to go to business school after I graduated, but it looks like my folks won’t have enough money to put me through college.
Judge Smails: Well, the world needs ditch diggers, too.
My argument is that Apple currently prices its iphones at consumer sweet-spot price points, so every piece of new tech they add (such as fingerprint scanners) eats into their colossal margins.
Your argument, if I understand it, is “Apple doesn’t care about selling more watches.”
Perhaps you’re talking about a different Apple.

Have you ever heard of the 3 Rs? Reduce, reuse and then recycle. We can’t just skip to recycle thinking it will save the world. But I’ll just let Apple and their marketing money convince us that they are saving our planet by making smaller boxes.
Trust me, they will be forced to panic when there is no resource to produce devices that deliver whatever 90x more performance than the last generation.

Let reality teach them a hard lesson. And fun fact: smartphone is not “essential goods”.

Good for Apple (and me as a stock holder) but the notch means nada...don't even notice it and don't really care if it stays the same, decreases or disappears. Just another pseudo '1st World' ""problem"".

Yay! This is the best iPhone Apple has worked on. I’m very positive Apple can’t wait to unveil the new iPhone in September.

Bloomberg: Apple asks suppliers to build 90 million ‘iPhone 13’ units by the end of 2021

Do you guys know how crazy this sounds? That’s 90,000,000.00 iPhones that Apple is focused on building and distributing it around the world. I bet you guys, it will still be back-ordered. Demand will be off the charts. Magnificent! 🥶

Bring it on Apple. My wallet is READY!

I'm not on the cheerleading bandwagon yet.

I read into this article for one to come around November/December for another article stating 'Apple reduces production for iPhone 13 mini due to lack of sales'. I'm hoping the mini this year gets a lot of love globally for Apple to re-consider continuing future minis (even if on an every 2-3yr cycle).

I changed my mind about watching the keynote for the iPhone 13. I’m still 1000% sure I won’t be upgrading my 12 Pro Max this year. I hope next year’s iPhone isn’t portless. I have Apple CarPlay but it’s not wireless. I would have to buy an $100+ adapter to use wireless Apple CarPlay. Without Apple CarPlay, I can’t use navigation in my SUV. I don’t know what Hyundai was thinking not including navigation in the limited 2021 Tucson.

I guess it doesn't really help to complain about lack of touch ID. But I will anyway. I want touch ID, damn it.

I agree and what is even more frustrating is that I have to buy the 13 mini because there will be no mini next year.

The SE is too much of a backward step. I have a 12 mini since last November and was hoping to keep it for 5 years. But because there will be a 14 non-Pro Max instead of a mini in 2022, I will buy this 13 mini just before it's discontinued in order to extend this beautiful form factor for myself into the future.

"Oh I want to upgrade" feeling was due to the low state of technology and the rapid pace of development in the early years of smart phones. Now it doesn't matter so much, all the displays get rated as virtually indistinguishable from reality, last-year's iPhone is consistently faster than the best android can do currently (but they are all fast enough, so does anybody care anymore?). New OS features get rolled back for many generations of phones because the technology has been there for awhile.
So maybe you can give us a list of new and exciting features that current generations of phones just don't have?
Current phones have almost all features previous gen phone shave (iPhone-wise). So right now, as you pointed out, that feeling is getting lost or is lost.

If they're anticipating high demand, maybe there's something more under wraps. As-is it looks like one of the most underwhelming upgrades in history.
I can not see how this can be anymore underwhelming than the XS? If there was ever an underwhelming model, that would be it.
