This is even better than I expected, bumped graphics too! I'm ordering mine tomorrow, this will perhaps be the last one with built in superdrive. Maybe I'm weird but I always tend to buy the last update of each generation to get the most refined version of that specific model.

I love the MBP's, as I just got my 15" 2.2Ghz back in May, but they really need to start shipping these things with 8GB of ram and faster hard drives right out of the box for the prices they charge. Especially the 15" and 17" models. Apple also needs to stop with this 90 days of complimentary phone support and charging $300+ for Applecare. Those things should come standard for the price of these things.

don't blame TurboBoost

Do they get less hot than their previous iterations? My 13" MBP (base model) gets HOT if there's a little more going on. TurboBoost, I guess. I wish there was a way to disable it.

With the clock going UP, I don't see how the temperature is going DOWN...

It's not due to TurboBoost, since TurboBoost disables itself when the CPU gets hot. ( http://www.intel.com/content/www/us...ology/turbo-boost/turbo-boost-technology.html )

Even Core (pre Core 2) CPUs got hotter when "more was going on" - it's simply the case that CPU power draw (and heat generation) increases as the workload increases.

The problem is that the cooling system in the laptop isn't adequate to keep it at a comfortable temperature.

And to the point that higher GHz means more heat, note that chip revisions and process improvements can improve power management - so it's not clear that the slightly faster CPU will generate more heat than the older stepping.

Does this mean that its not likely to come a new mbp early 2012?
Im goeing to by a new macbook pro, and dont know if i should wait a few month. My macbook works ok....

thumbs down if you think specs still stink 4 price.

No 8GB Standard

What? You buy a 2k machine and can not pay 50 US$ on the free market for 8 GB guaranteed Apple compatible RAM?

No SS standard at near 2k.
We are lucky, if we see SSDs as standard in 9 years (2020). Like one bright MR forum member wrote: [Today] You can buy a car for the price of a 1 TB SSD.

No better bluetooth
And the devices which support this are...?

No better display's
The current displays, also on the Early-2011 models are much better than the displays on the 2009er models. I've used both generations. Besides that, the Intel HD 3000 does not support retina displays, so all MBP users must use the discrete GPU, if they want to use a retina display, which is a waste of battery time & energy.

Wait for IB, it will solve some of your "very important problems".

Hmm, that's quite odd for small updates. I wondered if Apple is going to update Macbooks (and all macs) every couple of months instead of once/twice a year, just like the other competitors except iDevices?

Does anyone know if the power consumption of the 2.4 GHz i7 and the 6770m is lower than the early 2011 counterparts?

If not, I sure hope they have upgraded the PSU/charger as well. My 2011 MBP starts draining the battery as soon as you do something "demanding" such as minor editing in Lightroom or try to play the 2 years old game Dragon Age, i.e. the power it gets through the charger cable is insufficient for the laptop to run properly.

Buy Now or Wait?

I'm confused, maybe someone can help? I've been wanting a new MBP and thought best to wait for the Ivy Bridge and rumored redesign a la MBA. Now with this update will this be the current model for the next 6-12 months? Or is this just short term and the newer re-design will come right after Xmas? Thanks for any input.

If I remember correctly, there used to be an option in the high end 15" and the 17" to bump the graphics card to 2GB RAM (although I might be confusing it with the iMac). If that's true, that option is no longer there.

Nice updates in my honest opinion.

Sweet, the biggest upgrade comes for the low end 15" macbook pro now getting the ati 6750 with 512mb vram with the same price. It doesnt hurt that it gets 2.2GHz now too! Huge upgrade imo. :D

Agreed. The base 15" gets the best upgrade. The 13" is quite minor. It should have had a 500GB hdd a long time ago since the cost difference between the 320 and 500 is about $5.

Hmm… do you think I could get apple to upgrade my 256MB 6490M card to the new 512MB 6750M? I wonder how much that would cost...

ahh so whenever you buy a MBP or something you should pretty much wait till the "minor updates" [if they are rumored].. i wish i bought this one instead of my 2010 C2D with 250 GB storage :p but i doubt it would have happened, probably would have just bought the 2011 MBP when it first came \out haha

I still feel the axiom "buy it when you need it" is the best indicator for when to purchase. There will always be a better one coming up soon, but there can be no legitamate regrets if you buy it out of necessity. I was using an iBook from 2004 until 3 months ago, when I had to finally get a new pro 15 to complete my work. Waiting wasn't an option any longer for my circumstances, thus no regrets or second guessing.

What? No case redesign?

Epic Fail....

Today's news makes me wish I needed to replace my 17" i7 MBP, but she's still working well.

This update is not bad at all, considering it's just a minor one... I'm tempted to get one before this year ends, my MBP 15" 2009 is like a snail compared to these @_@

can someone please help me with the differences between i5 (the feb 2011 13 inch Macbook) with this one.... i already upgraded the ram and hd.... so I'm wondering if i am missing out on speed

I don't think AppleCare should be free, but I agree on a computer that expensive the 1 year warranty should include 1 year telephone support.

The reason being? If you don't live close to an Apple Store and you're past 90 days, Apple support line will REFUSE to setup any repair for you because they can't "talk," to you until you pay them, effectively making your warranty useless unless you pay to talk, buy Apple Care, or drive hours to an Apple Store.
