My wife's previous Macbook Pro died, so she ordered one from Amazon which arrived on Saturday. Very bad timing I guess (but she needed it for a business trip). Any chance of her getting a rebate or anything for getting the model that was just on its way out...?

Nope.

It must be only apple buyers who think this way. Every other computer manufacturer updates its products weekly. There are always spec boosts, new models coming in, old models going out, sales, discounts etc. Apple is different. They only sell three laptop models and you really can't customize them, and they only update them twice a year. Its a whole different game, and they can play it because people go along with it because its Apple. If you buy a book and a new edition comes out the next day, do you get a a partial refund? If you buy a car and a new model comes out two weeks later do you get a rebate for getting a car that was on the way out? Nope sorry, apple is a nice company but they aren't that nice. If its really a problem then return it and buy a new one. But its not worth your time, because you would honestly never notice the difference in performance.

Haha my 2010 MBP 13" started to crap out last night....and I'm itching for a 17" thanks for making the decision a little easier!

I just bought the 13" i5 refurb for $999 and it's now $929. I'm thinking about returning it for the i7 2.7 as the price has dropped to $1189 refurb. I hope they waive my restocking fee, I haven't opened it yet.

Apple isn't suppose to have restocking fees in most cases now I think even if opened, though this wasn't reflected online for a while, I thought it was fixed now.

However, since you haven't opened it, you're REALLY set. Just make sure you don't mark "opened," and you will have ZERO issues.

If you do it online, you will have to pay for the shipping back to Apple though and be sure to insure it.

If you call in after ordering the other one or before, you might try to get a label out of them, but I don't know. I'm so lazy, I always just pay shipping myself. haha.

I still think you have a great machine though. If you called in, they would probably give you the $70 too from what I've read on here in the past, if you just one to keep yours.

Happy and Disappointed all at the same time

So the bump in HD space was sorely needed and appreciated and the bump in overall general specs is nice as well.

What still REALLY gets to me is the lack of a respectable resolution on the 13 inch pro. It's just downright embarrassing that they haven't fixed it yet. The 11 inch Air has a higher resolution... please Apple, just fix it.

I'm still more than happy with my 2.3GHz, 8GB, 6750M machine. I usually feel 'behind' when there's an update, but...nothing really changed. :p

Do they get less hot than their previous iterations? My 13" MBP (base model) gets HOT if there's a little more going on. TurboBoost, I guess. I wish there was a way to disable it.

With the clock going UP, I don't see how the temperature is going DOWN...

I'd expect them to continue Apples tradition of creating hot running desktops & laptops. Apple just cant help themselves, the goal is a beautiful appearance, not a professional do anything laptop.

They've been denying the importance of good thermal management for years. Instead Macs are programmed to shut down. When mine shuts down, interrupting my work flow & costing me time, I switch to my new ThinkPad workstation which will take anything resource intensive with ease. It runs lightning fast, cool & quite.

Oh how I wish Apple would quit obsessing on "style" and making my MBP's thin like an anorexic super model. I use mine as a computer for work. I don't wear it like an accessory :)

This update is what i expected. It will help clear out inventory for the holiday and for the January unveiling of the new redesigned macbook pros. You know...the ones WITHOUT an optical drive.

They are coming IMHO. Apple has done this update in Oct/Nov before and then redesign in January.

Watch. :)

The HD isn't too significant to me as I would likely always immediately swap it out with a SSD, but I reuse it as an external, so a bit bigger is nice.

As for the display, I also much prefer MacBook Air resolutions. However, I will say, those with slightly below average vision, much prefer the current resolution. Some can flat out see nothing on an Air's screen. Perfect for me though!

I agree with you that something bigger will come next year, perhaps even a physical redesign. Nevertheless, I think January is too soon. That was the MacWorld days.

Thanks. I called and they sent the return label. I ordered the i7. I think it's a great deal compared to a late 2011 i5 IMO. Way better than my 08 2.4 white MacBook...

Everything else can stay the same :D

i hate to break your heart, but there is no such thing as a "mb"
there is however a Mb and a MB

info on bits to bytes said:
Byte= 8 bits

Kilobit (Kb)= 1000bits
megabit (Mb) = 1000 Kb

KiloBYTE (KB) = 1000 BYTES
MegaByte (MB) = 1000 KB

Byte < KiloByte < MegaByte < GigaByte < TeraByte.
You can have your imaginary mb, but i would love a 512 TB

True. Perhaps when the IvyBridges are ready. Spring? But next year definitely.

Ahhh, a smart poster. This is true. Is to get many suckers in with old body style, then will have to upgrade in 4 months to beautiful new style. Current style is quite ugly too.

The 13" is still quite heavier than the Vaio S.

http://apcmag.com/mac-vs-pc-2011-who-does-the-best-core-i7-grunt-in-only-13-inches.htm

true it is, but then again, you have to keep in mind that the the MBP's design has been going on for a couple of years.
If the rumors are indeed true, then next year Apple will release a new MBP design, and i would bet you anything, they will create a new standard for laptop weight that will take any other PC maker a couple years at least to compare to Apple.
So let Sony have their fun for now, but they will start panicking once apple launches their latest MBP

I can't wait to see the new MBP designs [if they are true!]; Apple is going to kick their competition again.

as a sidenote, carbon fiber does look quite beautiful on the Sony Vaio S:
