I was actually surprised to see the Phone app in the number 1 position. It is rare to see someone actually talking on a phone anymore - text and social media are the way most people under 50 seem to communicate anymore. looking at my mobile bill the most of the phones (all iPhones) have at most 30 - 60 minutes of talk time but they have thousands of messages every month (which is quite a lot considering that count does not include Messages - only SMS to non-iPhone contacts.
My experience is different, I see lots of them call here (EU state).

"Mark Zuckerberg Told Facebook Staff In 2018 To 'Inflict Pain' On Apple".

Why? Because Apple was giving the option of turning off Facebook's Surveillance Retail Advertising information spigot to the Apple user base. And you can be sure anything out of Facebook is going to be a sharp barb at Apple.
It isn't necessarily wrong to do this. Business is a contact sport. But it is important to know what is the mindset behind "information" that comes from Facebook that speaks toward Apple.

Most of the apps Apple bundles are free with their sole purpose being to make iPhone work out of box. Apple doesn’t make a penny more if I use these versus a third party. If I don’t swap any of them for third party apps it’s because there aren’t any better ones. (Or because the developers of those “better” apps expect a subscription for basic functionality I already have)

The bundled apps are part of what I payed for when I bought my iPhone.

Obviously Music, TV and so forth are different cases; but most preinstalled apps are there for the same reason the OS is.

I actually agree that Apple/Google are squeezing out app developers bit by bit. You can’t even write an alarm app on iOS. Their own apps are first class citizens, pre-installed and always free. Apple/Google are getting too big. They are hampering innovation. FB is also part of the problem.

And yet... there are MILLIONS of apps on their app stores across TONS of categories.

Clearly those developers found something to make.

Yeah... you can't make an alarm app. Big whoop. So make a calendar app instead.

Or don't... and get a normal 9 to 5 job doing literally anything else.

The fact that making apps can be a career is amazing. And yet... people still find something wrong with it.

:p

Yes Apple bundles apps with the phone and I use them. I also choose to download & purchase other apps when the Apple bundled apps do not do all the I need. For instance for weather I also use the weather channel, weather bug, dark sky and windy. For PDF,s I do use notes, however I find PDF Expert significantly better. I do use the mail app, but mostly for searches, my default mail app is Spark. Oh BTW Apple even allows me to set that as my default mail app. I will admit that since I no longer need Microsoft Office I have switched to iWork and you know for my needs it’s great. Another thing I also use are the Apple written books (constantly upgraded and the upgrades are free) that are free and great as my go to source manuals, such as iPad Guide, Numbers Users Guide, iPhone Users Giude iOS 14.6, and Pages Users Guide for iPad. Oh and did I say I use Books to read them. On a side note I also have downloaded Nook and Kindle and I use them as well. So I say the fact that I use the Apps Apple includes, there are more 3rd party apps on my devices than Apple Apps. But all from the apps store, I like sand boxing. I like that Apple offers me security.

I don't do social media either. MR is the closest I come to that. In my opinion, social media has made our world a lot dumber.

As someone who has severe chronic anxiety i just feel like humans aren’t naturally supposed to be that ‘social’. I believe when you go home u should be able to relax and focus on what’s happening within those four walls. People constantly messaging me etc feels like an intrusion in the place i should feel safest and most sheltered - home. I need to shut off from the day. Even during the work day if i have people messaging me and notifications pinging all the time, its an anxiety provoking distraction and we didn’t evolve to be able to deal with so much going on mentally.

That's such an important note. If Apple monetized data for ads then free apps are a substantial benefit (often if it is free, you're data is the product). Without that monetization the benefit of including free apps is far less consequential.

Of course Apple could just pull a Microsoft. Incorporate all the apps into the OS. Then say 'hey it's an integral part of the OS'. Argument closed :)

My personal time is very important to me as well. I don't mind being social although large sweaty crowds of people aren't my idea of a fun time.

Have you tried keeping your phone on silent, or changing the text tone to something a lot more subtle?

I often put my phone on silent or flight mode. The text tone is a good idea though thank you!

Arguably it is the information overload of today's society by way of high technology that is causing increased tension in developed nations.
But right or wrong, good or bad overall, that genie is out of the bottle.
Some advice that may help a bit(and you may do all of them already): stay away from politics shows, podcasts etc. They're toxic to one's inner harmony balance. Next, make use of filters on devices. After X time I only let this set of favorites through to the ring/beep/doink/whatever alert. Finally (very important) put the KISS method in place for life: Keep It Simple Stupid. Reduce some of the moving parts. We humans are programmed to think we're missing out (FOMO: fear of missing out) but when the reality is revealed we really aren't missing out on that much.
Best of luck...

Before Facebook can be taken seriously they need to add their messenger "app" back into their mobile website. When they took it out they took away my choice.
Totally agree! I only use FB fleetingly and use Safari to access their website as I have more ability to curtail any tracking. They then open a “marketplace” and make their own “messenger” the exclusive means of communication with other users.…and make it so mobile users have to install the app.

This sounds like tying 2 products together and a probable anti-trust violation. 😂

Facebook seems desperate. They should find another revenue stream.
Also does anyone ever click on ads?

The worst thing is birthday presents/surprises have been ruined in our house, i guess because we’re all on the same WIFI? e.g. person 1 will be browsing for person 2’s bday present, and suddenly person 2 starts getting ads on Facebook for what p1 has been looking for!

Facebook? And false impression… what do you expect.

I don’t remember Facebook complaining about being unfair when they had a good relationship with Apple.

Sounds like they are crying and lieing all over the place now.
Exactly when Facebook and Twitter a pre-installed as connections within settings where you can sign in on iOS earlier there was no complaint nothing to complain about. Since then when they got kicked off Twitter isn’t complain because Twitter doesn’t have altruistic motives to screw over their users and turns the data they do what they can to make the best product for chat for international communications however Facebook cesspool.

So, what about those of us who liked the "walled garden" approach? I like the simplicity of iPhones and iOS. I like a central app store, I like the pre-installed apps.

I don't care. You "liking" something is not worth the societal effect of an individual corporation having so much market control. The people who died in Hong Kong as a result of Apple blocking apps to evade law enforcement? The sex workers who are discriminated against? The LGBTQ minorities, who get blocked across the entire wider internet even on other devices as a direct consequence of Apple's decisions?

I understand the need to fight monopolies to some degree, but I also don't think you should punish companies just because they have the best products. Apple developed the iPhone and iOS, and I don't see why their success entitles others to leech off that same success by default.

You should absolutely "punish" companies for sheer size. You shouldn't punish shareholders, but they are not harmed by splitting Apple into several companies. They now own shares in several companies.

Apple is too hubristic, but the App Store is toxic to the company in the long run. It protects terrible software by Apple, and harms to the consumer and the company by not forcing them to compete.

Facebook has its own battles separate from this topic, and I don't think this is going to help them in their arguments.

By all means break up Facebook too. And Microsoft. And Google.

If you come to my house for dinner I have as much power over what you eat.
Exactly
every smart phone or feature phone or dumb phone manufactured always heard phone text network connection mobile connection for data Wi-Fi connection etc. all created by the manufacture because that’s the responsibility so these apps should not be included they should be ignored as internal features.
That said all the other apps that all depends upon your users and their demand it has nothing to do with any App Store when it’s Google or android it doesn’t matter it all depends on the manufacture if they choose to bundle your crap Facebook or not APple chose not to bundle your crab.
