Political topics such as http://nation.foxnews.com/ probably won't go over too well here, however the source when relating to this specific topic should be considered. Please go to the site directly and judge the credibility for yourself, starting with their current headline "If Pope Francis Wants To Help the Poor, He Should Embrace Capitalism". One could say TheOnion may offer a more credible story on this subject.

I'd buy a Tesla. They are the :apple: of cars.
$34B here, $50B there—it's only money after all. And there the aspect of cultural compatibility and assimilation. There's a reason Daimler AG sold their Tesla stock. Tesla as a company is overvalued right now. Plus they gave up their patents to the public domain which makes them less attractive as an acquisition.

Lithium battery prices should continue to fall and be down significantly by then.

That said, I'm not sure how to think about this...I'd love to see what Apple could do with a car and I'll be in the market about then (and would want a plug-in of some sort, electricity is roughly $1.25 a gallon gasoline equivalent at average U.S. daylight electricity rates), but would I want a 1.0 Apple hardware and software release to put my life into? Hmmmnnnn. Can't wait to see it though.

I really do question Apple building an entire car - it just seems so outside the rest of their product line. I could see them co-branding a car (hopefully not as disastrous as clones or the ROKR), but I have a feeling this is going to be more of a super CarPlay that Apple will shop around as an OEM solution (like MS Sync).

Maybe I'm wrong though, and if I am it'll probably be the first Apple product I don't buy... I would be shocked if an Apple car comes in at less than six figures.

like it matters where it comes from, its all owned by people that socialize together anyways.

here, take it from somewhere that you think has better point of view

ps good luck with driving around with solar panels on your roof, i cant - its where i put the family pet when i go on vacations

Here's the problem with this though: you're comparing producing electricity to running an ICE. They aren't at all the same thing.

If you want to fairly compare the two, you need to look at at least the following four things:

1 - Producing electricity.
2 - Getting that electricity to drive a car forward.
3 - Producing gasoline.
4 - Getting that gasoline to drive a car forward.

#3 is something that any study like this completely ignores. Here's a fun fact: producing 1 gallon of gas consumes 6 kWh of electricity. That one gallon of gas will then drive the typical car approximately 20 miles while spewing emissions along the way. Alternatively, 6 kWh of electricity could be used to drive an electric car 20 miles - no emissions at all.

So, in fact, when you look at an electric car, you just need to factor in #1 and #2. When you look at an ICE car, you need to look at #1, #3, and #4. #1 is in both, so don't bother looking at it any longer. You just need to compare #2 against #3 and #4, and #3 is going to involve somehow extracting oil from the ground.

Whether you choose Coal or Solar for #1, it doesn't matter - an electric car is in every way better than an ICE when it comes to emissions and health.

Mr. Cook?? JUST BUY TESLA

It would be vastly cheaper to simply offer all of the employees at Tesla 200% salary increases and poach the lot of them. Tesla is great, but its market cap price makes acquiring it a very expensive proposition. And it is unlikely that they have patents that are particularly worth it. If Apple has 600 people already working on a car, they've likely caught up to a lot of what Tesla has in terms of technology. They just are keeping it under wraps for now.

This is either incredibly awesome or incredibly scary. I, however, hope it is the former. Thankfully with evidence this concrete and this early, we can all start saving now instead of running ourselves into debt upon its undoubtedly expensive release. But hey at least you could probably live in it too when you go broke paying for it!

Does anyone want to take a guess as to what the possible price of the "Apple Car" would retail for?
I'm curious if they would release 2 different model vehicles .. in true Apple fashion! ;)

when will they start factoring in coal plants as emissions, since they need to be charged? sorry for your feel good but electric cars have more of a "carbon footprint" than the gasoline engine. i guess we'll know when it isnt politically advantageous anymore...

Your right. People forget that these items are charged by what is considered dirty power sources. Also, something people forget, is the rare metals used in production of the items. Extracting the rare metals is very destructive on the environment besides the residue long after the item has ceased its functionality.

Huffington Post? OK. Fox News & Huffington Post: 2 stellar source of objective reporting , not biased in any way by the companies that advertise heavily on both. You might want to give this a read: http://shameproject.com/report/huff...-between-paid-advertising-and-real-reporting/

I appreciate the point you are trying to make. But anyone who thinks it through will see the holes in such slanted points of view. If you want to build up some real, objective support, go to the scientists who are not shills for fossil fuel companies. I think it's pretty hard to find media companies these days that have not sold out their objectivity to maximize their advertising revenues.

Noooo! Not BMW! This looks similar to the Beats acquisition by Apple's management: it's other people's money, after all.

In the meantime, Tesla will have a $40k car that runs for 200 miles on a single charge a couple of years before the Apple car comes to market. And Tesla knows good design, too....

If Apple cars work like Apple Maps did upon release, keep them the heck AWAY from me and my family...
(Especially if they go the driverless route!)

Apple is speeding up development on its electric car project, reports The Wall Street Journal, giving it a "committed project" label and targeting 2019 as a prospective shipping date. To facilitate a faster launch, Apple will be greatly expanding the number of people working on the car.Apple has already been aggressively hiring for its car project, poaching employees from companies like Ford, General Motors, Tesla, Volkswagen, and more. Many of its recent hires have expertise in connected and autonomous vehicle systems.

The BMW i3, which Apple reportedly considered using as a base for the Apple Car

Though there have been indications suggesting Apple is exploring autonomous vehicles as part of its car project, The Wall Street Journal's sources say the first car Apple releases will not be driverless, with that functionality perhaps coming at a later date.

There have been also other signs pointing towards expanded work on the car project. In May, Apple began looking into secure facilities in the Bay Area where a prototype could be tested, reportedly meeting up with officials at GoMentum Station, a secure test facility for connected and autonomous vehicles. Apple also met with DMV officials in August to discuss California's autonomous vehicle regulations.

It remains unclear if Apple will develop its "Apple Car" from the ground up or if it will team up with an existing auto manufacturer. Rumors have suggested Apple has held discussions with BMW over a potential partnership that would see the BMW i3 used as the basis for the Apple Car, but those talks have reportedly not progressed into a deal.

The Wall Street Journal warns that Apple's 2019 target date might not be the date in which Apple will actually ship the car, instead suggesting it could point towards the date that engineers confirm the main features of the product. It's also possible that given the scope of the project there could be delays, with "people familiar with the project" expressing skepticism that 2019 is a reasonable target date.

In an interview with Stephen Colbert last week, Tim Cook was asked about the car project, but he unsurprisingly avoided the question with a vague statement. "We look at a number of things along the way, and we decide to really put our energies on a few of those," he said.

I predict a proprietary cable needed for charging and/or they will create a new standard and then try and license it. I also predict trunk storage space that isn't sufficient. I jest. mostly.

I think Apple should hire Chris Bangle to help with the Apple car. Bangle's butt would be better than flat.
