I really do question Apple building an entire car - it just seems so outside the rest of their product line.

That's what Palm said about Apple Computer building mobile phones. Creative Inc. may have said the same about Apple and music players. Both ended up driving more growth than previous existing product lines.

Take a look at Tesla. Completely different model than a standard car. Very little maintenance as well.
There's almost negligible maintenance on the drive train (just an electric motor and no transmission), but even Tesla still has regular mechanical upkeep on the rest of the vehicle. Tires, brakes, wheel bearings, suspension, steering components and the whole shebang..... not to mention that huge and no doubt pricey Touchscreen and other varied electronic goodies on board that could fail, possibly rendering the car inoperable.....

Even so, how many companies have found success by making everything. It's worked so well for Sony.

If and when self driving cars (stuffed full of expensive electronics and sensors) become the norm, I fail to see how they will be anything resembling repairable.

Apple car Edition will feature 2 exclusive rim options: gold and rose gold.

One thing still remains unclear, though: will apple car's logo be backlit or just a polished metal, like that in new MacBooks?

when will they start factoring in coal plants as emissions, since they need to be charged? sorry for your feel good but electric cars have more of a "carbon footprint" than the gasoline engine. i guess we'll know when it isnt politically advantageous anymore...

I hate this argument.

Making things run on electricity doesn't necessarily stop carbon emissions, sure. But if we were in a world were all cars were electric, that at least shifts the problem to the power stations, which we can then solve.

Right now, if all power stations go green, we still have the problem of verchiles emitting greenhouse gas. So let's get as much as possible running on electricity, then we can move over our power stations to renewable energy and stop emitting so much greenhouse gas.

We'll never just stop emitting greenhouse gas in one step, so we have to start somewhere.

Renault Samsung Motors?

Wow, Samsung does have a car brand in Chile and South Korea.

Surprisingly nice... wonder why they don't sell in the U.S. Regulatory difficulties?

EDIT: Eh, after watching a video it's obvious it couldn't compete with modern design.

This is so...astonishingly...stupid. It really is. They are making the exact same mistake they made in the 1990's, trying to enter too many markets, spreading themselves way too thin.
How are they spreading themselves too thin? The only really new product under Cook is Watch. It would be stupid for Apple to not think about the future. And how do you keep/acquire talented engineers if they know all they're going to be doing is making a slightly better version of iPhone, iPad, Mac etc. At some point designing another rounded rectangle only slightly thinner and lighter would get pretty boring.

The true answer is the hybrid is the most environmentally efficient, to date. As more of the power grid moves off of fossil that will move to an all electric advantage.

you are wrong actually. There is a nice video from the lead engineer who was a founder of Tesla who goes over all of this. Its an hour and a half long as I recall and he talks about the entire history of the company and he addresses this myth. The gas engine is extremely inefficient, and don't forget a lot of oil is coming from things like fracking and oil sands which are quite disruptive to the environment as well

Not to mention Apple of the 1990s was a blip on the radar in corporate worth, influence and financial stability, let alone talent and vision moving forward.

Steve most certainly would have moved Apple into making this project a reality.

I can only imagine how expensive an Apple Car would be. Tesla have done amazing things with their Model S. It is the first car I aspire to own where as all other guys we've had are more out of necessity than a desire to own it.

I suppose Apple will go for that segment of the market, some kind of luxury sedan.

Wasn't talking about self-driving cars persé, but at any rate I imagine these 'expensive electronics and sensors' could all be on modules that although most likely expensive, could perhaps relatively easily be swapped out.

What is Apple making right now outside of computers? It's not like we have Apple dishwashers and refrigerators. And the car is going to become the ultimate computer, no?

By 2019 $30k cars will reach Tesla's 200+ range.

The i3 is a roughly $50k car. You're delusional if you think today's $35k Honda Accord will get less expensive over time.

With that being said, the price isn't the problem. BMW i3 suffers on their target range not meeting reality. When Apple steps in they better match what they claim or will face a wrath of negativity traditional auto corps never face.

2019 just means either models released in Sept 2018 and thus finalized by Sept 2017 or we don't see this until Sept 2020. We're near 2016, so Apple better have some big improvements in battery tech soon or the car will be nothing more than a glorified grocery store cruiser.

Porsche's 911 replacement just revealed leap frogs Tesla and its battery range is far superior.

Over a 500km driving range on a single charge. That should be Apple's target in range.

I forget the exact number and can't be arsed to look it up right now, but a good amount of our electricity is from nuclear sources, and I live near a NPP so I'll feel just fine. You can sit down now.

adding a car isn't exactly making everything. I mean look at Samsung, now they make everything. Chips, ram, SSDs, toasters, fridges, washers and dryers, cameras, phones, tablets, tavs blu ray players, home theater etc etc etc etc. They seem to be doing alright with it
