I could get behind this kind of a car. A true Tesla competitor without being too outlandish in features. No steering wheel is just asking for trouble especially in the north where there's icy roads/bad visibility a good portion of the year. Not to mention idiot drivers and needing that human gut reflex too.

One strong reason for Apple to make a Car is they can incorporate all their devices into the Car and reduce costs.

Why not use your iPhone or iPad as the infotainment display. You could adjust heating/cooling on your iPhone from anywhere, then just drop it into the slot in the Car.

Can Apple make a city Car for $35,000?

2025? If serious, show me the Apple Car factory.
Found you a race track tho. Check this out 🥲 It's legit.

I'm legitimately curious what the value proposition is here versus another vehicle with well-implemented current or next-generation CarPlay, especially if autonomous driving is taken off the table or severely limited. Cars can already be deeply tied into the Apple ecosystem via CarPlay, and the next generation is open to all manufacturers to deepen the integration. So other than perhaps creating a rival to Tesla, which has thus far shunned CarPlay, what's the point?

The problem I have with all these new boutique car wannabes, supporting a product that lasts more than 5 years. A significant part of the car sale, support. Especially with new brands. Where established brands have a huge advantage. How cool is a technology advanced car if it sits broken somewhere.

It's no wonder Apple has problems with creating a car, they just got rid of Bootcamp. I mean, how can you have a car that doesn't use Windows™️

Good one! If that's the case, you might as well ask Siri to do all that for you.
“Siri, can I see it, test drive it, finance it, enjoy it, garage it, wash it, drive it anywhere... all within the goggles?”

Siri: “I don’t know what you mean by see it, test drive it, finance it, enjoy it, garage it, wash it, drive it anywhere... all within the goggles. Here’s what I found on the web for see it, test drive it, finance it, enjoy it, garage it, wash it, drive it anywhere... all within the goggles.”

;)

I hear it takes the goggles to successfully drive the car...
...and the car to exclusively deliver the googles.

Classic chicken and egg problem that perhaps even Apple can't resolve. ;)
Do not forget the iPhone or iPad to order both. Not even gonna mention Apple Watch Ultra to sync crash detection and Health+ subscription to call emergency instances.

Seems less and less impressive every time we hear about it.

If they can’t bring something new to the table then they should just abort the project altogether.

There are enough car brands already and next to none of them offer anything truly unique.

Just think of all the better uses there could’ve been for all the money and time they have poured in and wasted on this

Cut the losses and move on Apple

A full self driving vehicle before the end of the decade seemed impossible, and it was probably never their intention. Between now and then the EV market should be massive, so their entry would be very late. I think the vehicle will be less expensive than most think.

Apple has scaled back its Apple Car project and the company no longer plans to release a fully self-driving vehicle, reports Bloomberg.

Apple wanted to create a self-driving car without a steering wheel or pedals, but has decided that such a plan is not feasible at the current time. The vehicle will have guided driving features that work on highways, but it will not be able to operate entirely on its own at all times.

The car will have an Apple-designed custom processor to power AI functionality, similar to the Mac, iPhone, and iPad. The chip is equivalent to four of the highest-end Mac chips and is nearly production ready. It will include a custom array of lidar sensors, radar sensors, and cameras, which will be able to provide the car with positioning information, lane data, and orientation compared to people and objects.

Apple will use the cloud for some AI processing, and the company is considering a remote command center that could assist drivers and control cars from afar during emergencies. It may also offer its own insurance program to companies. Apple's scaled-down vehicle will feature steering wheels and pedals, like a normal vehicle. It will allow customers to do things like watch movies or multitask while on highways. The car will provide alerts when it is time to switch to manual controls for city streets or in poor weather, with the self-driving component perhaps limited to the North America at launch.

The Apple Car project has undergone several shifts in development scope since Apple started it way back in 2014. Apple initially planned for a full vehicle, then in 2016, rumors indicated plans for a car had been shelved and Apple would instead develop some kind of autonomous driving system for other vehicles.

By 2020, plans for a full vehicle with autonomous driving capabilities were back on, with Apple testing self-driving technology in SUVs in the San Francisco Bay Area, but it seems the full autonomous driving features are not going to be ready when the first Apple Car launches.

The Apple Car team has also gone through several leadership changes, and at the current time, AI and machine learning chief John Giannandrea is heading up the Apple Car project, and Kevin Lynch, known for his work on the Apple Watch, is also overseeing work on the car.

While rumors suggested that the car could launch as soon as 2025, it is now expected in 2026 at the earliest, with Apple aiming to sell a consumer model for under $100,000.

Apple has to finish its new Mac Pro which is probably being designed to be used in compute farms like for Auto AI and other AI projects. Apple CarPlay is not there concern it was just their foot in the door of the automobile world. If or when Apple actually makes a automobile $100,000 will be a realistic price. I think Apple's focus is building AI for Autos tech to sell to other car makers that actually know how to build cars.

You know that's getting tired, right? Apple Maps navigation is exceptional in our area (BC, Canada). The only gripe that I have is it continues to insist on U-turns at intersections, which is not legal in our area.
Yea it's bad enough Maps says to do illegal U-Turns. What about an auto car doing it. Would you just tell the cop and/or judge the car did it.
