The whole story around AVP is so messed up on the forums. Apple didn’t expect an entirely new product category that starts at more money than the average American’s monthly take-home pay to be a smash hit selling millions of units. They’re not idiots.

Just because Apple intentionally released a product unaffordable to most people, so that there would be sufficient content, apps, and use cases in a few years when the technology is doable at a price and form factor that is appealing to the mast market, does not mean it is a failure.

And it’s an amazingly innovative product.
The only problem is that developers aren’t developing apps in droves for it. I’ve read that development for apps almost got to a standstill already.

It’s not only Apple who has to earn money, developers have to earn too.

Besides that google and Samsung come with a same sort of device and google introduced Android XR which is open to everyone to build on.

I think the AVP was a nice demo, but as are more Apple products, way overpriced, too closed and restricted by Apple.

Google and Samsung already won this race and the AVP can put in the museum.

Tim Cook's base salary is 3 million; the vast majority of the rest of his compensation is based on goals he achieved that were set by the Board of Directors and also his compensation is based on how well Apple stock performed. For comparison sake, Hock Tan, the CEO of Broadcom makes more than twice what Tim Cook makes and Apple, not Broadcom is the number one corporation in market capitalization.
Apple's 2024 net income was $97.7 BILLION and profits were 24%. Cook is compensated in the millions not billions.

A tiny fraction of what Steve Jobs got out of Apple. And a tiny fraction of what Ballmer got from MS. It doesn’t matter how much time you put into a company, how central you are to a company success, you can never overcome the founder advantage in terms of accumulating wealth.

Considering he has given away millions of shares to charity, and has stated publicly he will give away almost his entire fortune, I think I’m happy with this. So if he is given $50M, $100M or even a $Billion, I’d be happy that he’s giving it to people and organisations who need it.

Of course people here who hate Cook will say charities don’t deserve it. Says more about those people than it does about Cook.

Good for Tim. Tim deserves it as he is taking the company to new heights. Also there will be CEOs of other companies that earn more than Tim

Steve Jobs was worth $10B in 2011. Look what good it did him. That’s why I’m glad Tim Cook, with an estimated net worth of $2.2B is giving away all his money. More he gets, the better it is for others.

Sometimes an expense sends outlandish at first until you consider the cost of not paying the expense. When I worked at a commercial nuclear port plant, we needed a particular pump motor that was designed to work in a system related to nuclear safety. It was a relatively small pump, in a system that, except for testing, would hopefully never be needed.

A replacement motor was found at another site and a jet was chartered to fly the part from two states away to the site. Rumor was that the charter jet cost $30k. Outlandish? Maybe but when you consider that without that motor the plant was not allowed to operate and was losing thousands of dollars every hour it wasn't operating, that $30k was cheap.

This is a quite interesting story. Although it could be argued that someone ought to have been fired for not having a backup motor on site before anything failed.

I know the vast majority of of people here hate it, but the Apple Vision Pro is a pinnacle of innovation. The eye tracking & gestures based functionality is magnificent. 👍🏻 Those of you that think it’s impossible to earn as much as Tim Cook (who is a pauper to Mr Musk), try and take any company you head to an almost 4 Trillion market cap this past year and do that yourself.
I want to like the AVP. I don't dispute the advances they're making in that niche genre. But that's all it is ... a niche product providing a service to who, really? 10 gamers in Silicon Valley with disposable incomes? US Military pilots?

The product fails miserably as an affordable, Google Glass or Meta glasses wearable for the average consumer. Currently, I don't think average Apple enthusiasts are willing to shell out thousands of dollars for eye tracking and gesture based functionality just yet.

Smaller, and more subtle, with just the right amount of marketing, partnership with eye glass manufacturers, and the real Vision sector - optometrists, and this product could one day emerge from Apple's money pit.

Cook is required by Apple to use private aircraft for both business and personal travel.
That’s the bit that caught my eye.

Obviously security is a real concern here, but how healthy can the whole system be if the folks running it rarely come into contact with ordinary consumers whose lives their products are supposed to improve?

Is a gold-plated bubble the best vantage point to understand your customers needs?

He's the CEO of a multi trillion dollar company, yeah, he earned it.
You people act like management is easy.
Yeah, management isn’t easy but a CEO’s job is nowhere near the top of the difficulty pyramid. It’s not even the most difficult job at Apple. Sure, the stakes are big and you’re in the public eye but if you compare it to a creative lead or a middle manager who has no actual power but way too much responsibility, being CEO is way easier because you make decisions and then others carry them out. No one is giving you completely contradictory orders and expects you to find a way to carry them out by yesterday.

And if we look at all jobs, the most difficult ones are mostly in the lower middle of the pay / compensation pyramid. ER doctors, special ed teachers, military spec ops, firefighters, scientists etc.

There is no job that earns a person millions if you contrast it to a median salary.

If I owned Apple then I would just give him $3 Million, no private jet, business class ticket for work travel. Thats it!
How about a bicycle. Timmy is so involved saving the earth and flying extensively around the world is not giving a good example. If the plane is needed I recommend economy class so he can hear from ordinary people about apples products. 😉

I have to admit -- I'd have a good laugh with some video of Tim dragging his AVP with him onboard a "normal" flight

It would seriously be good for him to see how the AVP travels .. the AirPods Max also actually

Too little innovation. He has grown the services business I’ll give him that. But much of it was thanks to the strength of apples ecosystem. I see apples growth slowing down together with its mobile business.

Apple's 1+ Billion active and repeat customers who love Apple products, and have propelled Apple to becoming one of the most successful tech companies in the world, disagree with your assessment.

Perhaps you could list a dozen or so innovative products Apple should be developing? Should be easy.

That speaks to lock-in and lack of meaningfully good/good enough options outside the walls

Innovation is a totally different discussion

In fact, the more folks are locked in, the less innovating Apple needs to do ... and we are seeing that play out

They are sort of skating by with the minimum amount of innovating they can, if one looks at it objectively.
That's a good business move, but not very exciting on the innovation and "pushing the boundaries" fronts
