I like Cook's confidence, and I don't doubt he's correct, but this is the first time since iPhone 3G, and as a longtime Apple fan, that I'm considering an upgrade that is not an iPhone.

For me, it's too little, too late.

I'll come out and say it straight up, I think the design of the 6 is ugly - the plastic lines totally ruin it. I think their design started going downhill with the 5 and this cements their descent into Ugly Phone territory.

iOS is looking tired and outdated, despite the recent revamp. Pay piques my interest (coupled with Touch ID, which I haven't had the pleasure of using as an iPhone 5 user), but here in the UK, where we have contactless payment cards, I'm not sure it's such a big deal.

Everything else about the 6 seems to just be about playing catch up (and failing, in some respects). But due to Apple's incredible brand cachet, everybody's going wild and will treat it as the second coming.... (or 12th or whatever release it actually is).

I'm looking at the Xperia Z3. I know it's not out so I can't say with certainty, but all signs point to a better camera, better battery, better screen - the things I actually care about - and in my opinion at least, it looks miles better than the iPhone 6.

This is exactly where I stand, except I'm leaning towards the Z3 Compact, maybe even the Samsung Alpha. The "Pay" system won't likely make it's way to the UK for years anyway since we still don't even have iTunes radio.

I don't want to switch to Android but I'm imagining it's good enough nowadays - I'll try a friend's HTC One M8 first, I've got a couple of days to decide before I choose my upgrade I guess! The one thing I'd be happy about - getting away from reliance on ****ing iTunes. After spending half a day trying to sort music and films on my iPad for a holiday (non iTunes music and films) the thought of "drag and drop" on an Android device seems so simple, so intuitive, so "Apple", I'm surprised they hadn't thought of that...

It's a shame Sharp make crap phones because I kinda wish the iPhone 6 had a lot more of the design of the Sharp Aquos Alpha, which is a mid-spec phone at best but at least looks decent and compact...

Dilemmas ...

hmmm...

iPhone 6+, Sony Xperia Z2 (or 3?) or HTC One M8?

Is my current investment in Apple worth maintaining? I'm really having trouble justifying any of them except my current iPhone battery is dying.

While my own reaction to these announcements have been apathetic, I haven't yet seen the keynote. Of course no one has really been highlighting the major selling points.

Seeing as 3.5" smartphones are dead, I may as well embrace the bigger phones. Go hard or go home hey?

:sigh: Do others feel as reluctant to change?

I'll still have to check it out in the store, but the OIS is a big selling point for me. And the significantly greater battery life.

Yea that and finally the 1080p.

Now all I got to do is ask ATT to give me a loyal user waiver and let me upgrade 3 days early as my contract doesn't end til the 22nd. Do they even have those?

I have a hard time believing any ATT representative would block you from upgrading 3 days early. Especially if you hint you might be interested in changing carriers.

I’m feeling the same. Trouble is I don’t like any of the other offerings out there from a software point of view. Hardware though, I’m considering a Lumia 930.
Anybody know when the 6 will hit Uk retail stores even if it’s for viewing only purposes?

I wonder if they'll be able to play a simple audio file without constantly locking up and crashing. #PodcastPlayerSucks

Wow...what's shocking to me is reading all of the folks saying they're good with the 4.7 prior to the announcement but now there's droves for the 5.5.

Dammit Jim!

You know what’s funny is perception. The first big phone I saw was a Samsung Galaxy something, don’t know which one. It seemed massive.
I just went to this website where you can compare almost any models you like side by side and I thought that the 6 was my 5S.

The 6+ still seems big, the 5S seems small somehow.

I tell you: 1 GB of ram when I already have 1 devices suffering from this: rMini, iPhone 5S. High end devices crashing all the time when many apps and tabs are loaded.

This is the mother of 2011 RAM leftover garbage pieces.

For those not sure about the iPhone 6 (4.7") there's an interesting comparison here -

Comparison

It's only on-paper specs but nethertheless both other phones look interesting, kinda sad they're pretty much rushed-out midrange models vs the new and "exciting" premium iPhone 6 but already compete very closely - even in the design stakes where the iPhone is really starting to show it's age with ungainly length.

I'm really not sure this time which way to go...

The new phone isn't enticing me to upgrade from my 4S. I want my Phone to be a Phone Sized thing.

When I want to do more then a "get me out of a jam" internet browsing then I use my iPad. Really not interested in lugging constantly these bigger phones around.

The fact that Apple have the option to bring the icons down into reach for your thumb ( for me ) shows that even they realize that in reality is too big for a phone.

I really hope with the 6S that they can re-introduce a regular sized phone along side these mini iPad/Phones that seem to be going with these days.

SD Cards used to be slow, but now you can buy 90 MB/s cards at Best Buy.

An SD card slot makes good functional sense. It enables memory expansion and provides another method for file transfer. There is no good excuse to leave one out. Same with the battery - a swappable battery is more functional, easier to replace, and more environmentally concious.

It's obvious why Apple avoids these two highly functional features.

Until the card gets corrupted and you lose everything on it.

If size is the only issue, why not just get a 5S? As a bonus you also get TouchID and an A7 processor. And they just dropped it by $100 in price.

I'll call them in the morning and see what they say. They seemed to be willing but I couldn't confirm until knowing the purchase date..we'll see.

Hmm...I'm not sure that after the record sales (anticipated) that they'll decide to go back. The smaller phones may just solely be a pre-paid option at stores like Walmart.

I'm firmly in the 'meh' camp and beginning to think about jumping ship, making my 'essential' list this morning in fact. The phone is nice and all but I'm not liking the direction and general lack of quality that seems to be creeping into all of their product lines. The shambolic web stream yesterday is just an illustration of this.

Anyway :)

Best vanilla Android phone at the moment? I had the S4 for a while last year and it was unstable (compared to iOS) and everyone keeps telling me the vanilla experience is the one I seek.

Also looking at Windows phone. I'm very impressed with the Surface Pro 3, even considering chopping in the MBP for one.

Anyone else made the same move and found it a good one?

I have a bad feeling about this, if i had apple stock i would sell it now. I think the numbers will not live up to the anticipation, and it is such a stupid move from a CEO to jump the gun.
The reason i feel that this is bad:

1- the move to bigger screen was not an apple decision but rather market pressure (me to) type of thing, which alienate their base of happy 3.5inch users. Remind me of BlackBerry. I am happy with my 4s i want to keep everything about it but may be get upgraded guts, what should i do now? i dont want a bigger phone!

2- Apple abandoning SJ mantera and the reason for success ( the customer don't know what he wants), still true today, but no one has the balls to live by it.

3- i think this is the first of the real "new" apple products since JS pipeline has dried. How did they made the decision ? focus groups instead of vision ! just like any other company, and now they actually could fail, like any other company.
